The state has earned $48 billion from privatizations and TL 10.6 billion ($5.04 billion) from Treasury land and real estate sales in the last 11 years, according to figures revealed by Finance Minister Mehmet Şimşek on Sunday.
The privatization of several electricity distribution firms also resulted in billion-dollar gains. Başkent Elektrik, Gedik Elektrik and İstanbul Yakası Elektrik each netted the state $1.2 billion, while the privatization of Toroslar Elektrik brought in another $1.7 billion.
The sale of real estate on state Treasury-owned land has produced large profits throughout the tenure of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party). According to Şimşek, in the past 11 years, 450,000 units of real estate sitting on 902 million square meters of Treasury land have been sold by the state. The province of İstanbul produced the highest number of sales in this category, accounting for TL 1.1 billion, followed by the provinces of Ankara, Antalya and İzmir, which together accounted for over TL 1 billion in Treasury land real estate sales.
The sale of Treasury-owned forest land in the past decade totaled just over TL 4 billion, according to Şimşek, who added that the state had expected to sell TL 25 billion worth of such land. Treasury-owned forest land sales were highest in the provinces of Antalya, İstanbul and Muğla, respectively.
