Acxiom, the Quiet Giant of Consumer Database Marketing - NYTimes.com
    http://www.nytimes.com/2012/06/17/technology/acxiom-the-quiet-giant-of-consumer-database-marketing.html?pagewanted=all

Few consumers have ever heard of #Acxiom. But analysts say it has amassed the world’s largest commercial database on consumers — and that it wants to know much, much more. Its servers process more than 50 trillion data “transactions” a year. Company executives have said its database contains information about 500 million active consumers worldwide, with about 1,500 data points per person. That includes a majority of adults in the United States.

For Acxiom, based in Little Rock, the setup is lucrative. It posted profit of $77.26 million in its latest fiscal year, on sales of $1.13 billion.

Today, Acxiom maintains its own database on about 190 million individuals and 126 million households in the United States. Separately, it manages customer databases for or works with 47 of the Fortune 100 companies. It also worked with the government after the September 2001 terrorist attacks, providing information about 11 of the 19 hijackers.

    on parle donc bien de „data broker” ... #big_data #marketing #néocapitalisme #data-mining

Senator Opens Investigation of Data Brokers
      http://www.nytimes.com/2012/10/11/technology/senator-opens-investigation-of-data-brokers.html

      http://commerce.senate.gov/public/index.cfm?p=PressReleases&ContentRecord_id=a42a865a-be30-4171-8278-

WASHINGTON, D.C.— Chairman John D. (Jay) Rockefeller IV today announced that the Commerce Committee is asking for detailed information on the practices of data brokers that compile and sell information about consumers. A longtime champion of consumer privacy, Rockefeller said that the breadth and reach of data brokers – particularly with the growth of the Internet – requires a better understanding of their practices and the impact they have on consumers.

“Collecting, storing and selling information about Americans raises all types of questions that require careful scrutiny,” said Rockefeller. “While these practices may offer some benefits to consumers, they deserve to know what’s being collected about them and how companies profit from their information. We are sending letters to nine different companies today to learn how this industry works.”

Senator Rockefeller sent the letters to:

      Acxiom
      Experian
      Equifax
      Transunion
      Epsilon
      Reed Elsevier (Lexis-Nexis)
      Datalogix
      Rapleaf
      Spokeo
