The renowned theatre director Peter Brook, whose Bouffes du Nord theatre troop was supposed to appear in Israel later this year, announced on Tuesday the cancellation of his visit. This is yet another success for the 2005 Palestinian call for boycott, divestment and sanctions of Israel until the latter complies with international law.

Officials from the Cameri Theatre, which was to host Brook in its December international theatre festival, expressed anger at Brook’s decision. The Tel Aviv magazine Akhbar Hair reported that the Cameri Board of Directors held an emergency meeting on Tuesday to discuss the possibility of filing a legal suit against Brook.

Theater director Peter Brook has canceled his participation in the Cameri Theater’s international theater festival in Israel. An official from the Tel Aviv-based theater told Haaretz on Wednesday that the cancelation statement said Brook’s Bouffes du Nord theater group will not appear at the festival because the Cameri performs in the West Bank settlement of Ariel, and appearing there could be interpreted as though “we support the brutal colonialism in the territories.” Brook was supposed to arrive with his Parisian theater group in December and appear in the festival with the play “The Suit.” (Zipi Shohat )
