As a colossal Chinese container ship maneuvered into the narrow Miraflores locks on the Panama Canal, some 27 million gallons of water rose around it, propelling the vessel along this vital maritime shortcut between the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans.
But the critical water cushion that lifts and lowers ships through a series of locks along the canal is deflating because of repeated droughts, disrupting a key global trade route and slashing revenues that underpin Panama’s economy.
What is happening along this artificial waterway shines a spotlight on how global warming and extreme weather caused by climate change might affect the ocean shipping industry that moves 80% of world trade.
The slowdown in activity also comes as attacks on ships in the Red Sea by Yemen’s Houthi group have prompted shipowners to divert vessels to other routes.
But right now, the Panama Canal – which handles nearly 3% of all maritime trade – is ill-placed to take up the slack. With the volume of its transits down by about one third, global maritime trade flows face being reshaped.
This could see thousands of ships taking longer routes, which in turn would increase climate-changing carbon dioxide emissions and shipping costs, according to industry experts.
A severe drought last year caused water levels in Gatun Lake, the main rainfall-fed reservoir that feeds the canal locks, to fall. October saw the lowest rainfall on record for that month since 1950.
Hotter-than-average temperatures – 2023 was the hottest year on record – worsened by the El Nino weather phenomenon that sees warmer ocean surface temperatures in the eastern and central Pacific have also increased evaporation from the lake.
“We depend on rainwater,” said Ilya Espino de Marotta, the canal’s first chief sustainability officer.
“You used to see a dry year every 15 to 20 years. Now we saw a dry year in 2016, one in 2019, one in 2023 so obviously there’s a climate issue we need to address,” she said.
The resulting water scarcity is a major problem as each vessel passing through the 50-mile (80-km) trans-oceanic waterway uses some 51 million gallons (193 million liters) of water from Gatun Lake.
The lake also provides drinking water to about half of Panama’s 4.5 million people and balancing these key but competing demands on a finite resource will be a critical issue for whoever comes to power after a presidential election in May.
Espino de Marotta says drinking water is prioritized but given the canal’s economic importance, water supply for both shipping and people must remain viable.
Last year, for the first time in its more than 100-year history, the Panama Canal Authority (ACP) was forced to restrict ship transits due to low water levels in Gatun Lake. Queues of ships built up, and shipping rates increased because of the bottlenecks.
In normal times, around 36 ships carrying everything from liquefied natural gas and soybeans from the United States to copper and cherries from Chile cross the canal each day but this number has been cut to 24 this year.
Erick Cordoba, manager of the canal’s water division and head of a team of engineers and meteorologists monitoring the canal’s watershed, said he needs to prepare for another drought in the next four years.
“During the next drought, drinking water needs will surpass the water available for the transit of ships. That’s the problem,” he said.

Jared Kushner has praised the “very valuable” potential of Gaza’s “waterfront property” and suggested Israel should remove civilians while it “cleans up” the strip.
The former property dealer, married to Donald Trump’s daughter Ivanka, made the comments in an interview at Harvard University on 15 February. The interview was posted on the YouTube channel of the Middle East Initiative, a program of Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government, earlier this month.
Kushner was a senior foreign policy adviser under Trump’s presidency and was tasked with preparing a peace plan for the Middle East. Critics of the plan, which involved Israel striking normalisation deals with Gulf states, said it bypassed questions about the future for Palestinians.
His remarks at Harvard gave a hint of the kind of Middle East policy that could be pursued in the event that Trump returns to the White House, including a search for a normalisation deal between Saudi Arabia and Israel.
“Gaza’s waterfront property could be very valuable … if people would focus on building up livelihoods,” Kushner told his interviewer, the faculty chair of the Middle East Initiative, Prof Tarek Masoud. Kushner also lamented “all the money” that had gone into the territory’s tunnel network and munitions instead of education and innovation.
“It’s a little bit of an unfortunate situation there, but from Israel’s perspective I would do my best to move the people out and then clean it up,” Kushner said. “But I don’t think that Israel has stated that they don’t want the people to move back there afterwards.”
Masoud replied that there was “a lot to talk about there”.
Kushner also said he thinks Israel should move civilians from Gaza to the Negev desert in southern Israel.
He said that if he were in charge of Israel his number one priority would be getting civilians out of the southern city of Rafah, and that “with diplomacy” it could be possible to get them into Egypt.
“But in addition to that, I would just bulldoze something in the Negev, I would try to move people in there,” he said. “I think that’s a better option, so you can go in and finish the job.”
He reiterated the point a little later, saying: “I do think right now opening up the Negev, creating a secure area there, moving the civilians out, and then going in and finishing the job would be the right move.”
The suggestion drew a startled response from Masoud. “Is that something that they’re talking about in Israel?” Masoud asked. “I mean, that’s the first I’ve really heard of somebody, aside from President Sisi [Egypt’s leader], suggesting that Gazans trying to flee the fighting could take refuge in the Negev. Are people in Israel seriously talking about that possibility?”
“I don’t know,” Kushner replied, shrugging his shoulders.
“That would be something you’d try to work on?” Masoud asked.
“I’m sitting in Miami Beach right now,” Kushner said. “And I’m looking at the situation and I’m thinking: what would I do if I was there?”

Asked by Masoud about fears on the part of Arabs in the region that the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, would not allow Palestinians who flee Gaza to return, Kushner paused and then said: “Maybe.”
He went on to say: “I am not sure there is much left of Gaza at this point. If you think about even the construct, Gaza was not really a historical precedent [sic]. It was the result of a war. You had tribes in different places and then Gaza became a thing. Egypt used to run it and then over time different governments came in.”
Responding to a question about whether the Palestinians should have their own state, Kushner described the proposal as “a super bad idea” that “would essentially be rewarding an act of terror”.

In the past two days, a number of things happened that seemingly had nothing to do with each other. At 2:00 a.m. on Monday, the Israeli army stormed al-Shifa hospital, entering with tanks and heavy gunfire and killing and injuring dozens. It was the fourth invasion of al-Shifa since October, resulting in the arrest of over 80 people.
The day before, 13 aid trucks arrived in northern Gaza for the first time in four months without being turned back by the Israeli army or resulting in the massacre of starving Palestinian aid-seekers. People flocking to the UNRWA warehouse in Jabalia refugee camp to receive the aid stood in uncharacteristically orderly lines and patiently waited for the handouts of flour, rice, and other foodstuffs. Many could be seen cheering once the aid arrived, a scene captured by Al Jazeera’s coverage.
But what few people know is that this successful delivery of sorely needed food aid to northern Gaza is what led the Israeli army to launch its deadly raid on al-Shifa Hospital the next day.
The connection between these two events can only be explained by understanding who Israel was targeting in the raid — the now-martyred Faiq Mabhouh.
Mabhouh was the Director of Operations of the Gaza police force, a part of the Gaza government’s civilian administration. Unlike Hamas’s military wing, the Qassam Brigades, Mabhouh did not operate clandestinely at the start of the war, because he didn’t have to — he was in charge of civil law enforcement. Hamas released a statement after his death confirming that he “engaged in purely civil and humanitarian activity.”

The Israeli military withdrew from inside al-Shifa Medical Complex after storming the hospital, bulldozing the courtyard, and conducting an aggressive and extensive detailed search.
We’re getting reports of about 150 people detained from inside the hospital. At least 20 people were killed, including a top security commander who had been coordinating the efforts between Gaza clans and the UNRWA and successfully secured the delivery of aid trucks within the past two days to Gaza City and northern Gaza.
Killing this security commander will result in chaos. This has shattered the sense of safety and security for other people to continue coordinating this kind of work to deliver aid to these areas.
Air strikes continue in the vicinity. Residential buildings are being relentlessly bombed. We’ve heard of two buildings at the northern gate of al-Shifa Hospital being completely destroyed.
We’ve also heard from the southern part of the complex of one more residential building attacked, and a mosque to its west.

Ma fille était dans un collège de grande ruralité et on se rapprochait de 30 élèves par classe… les privilégiés !
À l’arrivée au lycée en métropole régionale, elle s’est retrouvée direct à 36-37 par classe. C’est un lycée de quartier dit « sensible », ce genre d’effectif y est la norme, même au collège. En classe d’art, faut pousser les murs, vu qu’il leur faut plus d’espace déjà que les classes du cursus général.
On sait aussi que les lycées du centre-ville, eux, ont des effectifs plus convenables. Je vous laisse deviner la CSP des parents.

The lobbying files promote the familiar though contested line that “Israel does not target civilians.” This has been questioned due to the sheer body count of Palestinian civilians, women and children, during the war, compared to members of Hamas, along with the stated intentions by several Israeli officials to “eliminate everything” in Gaza. The IDF has justified the high casualty numbers by saying that Hamas weaponizes civilians as human shields. Yet the IDF has authorized airstrikes on sites with dense civilian populations such as hospitals and refugee camps, most recently at the “Flour Massacre” at the end of February, when the IDF opened fire on civilians gathered around an aid truck delivery, killing over 100.
But even more controversial is that AIPAC is telling members of Congress that “Israel is not blocking the delivery of aid to Gaza,” and that “reports that people are starving in Gaza are false.” Neither claim is supported by findings of international authorities, nor by recent actions undertaken by the United States government. Just last week, the U.S. air-dropped aid packages into Gaza, circumventing Israeli border officials, and at the State of the Union address President Biden announced intentions to set up a port for deliveries. These actions were only necessary because Israel has made it difficult to get aid through checkpoints, such as during one recent incident where the Israeli navy fired at an aid convoy. The EU’s foreign-policy chief last week said that starvation in Gaza is being used as a weapon of war.

Amendment 36 calls for the suspension of EU funds to UNRWA, following until now unproven allegations that a few UNRWA staff members took part in the attacks of October 7th. This amendment comes just a few days after the EU announced it had resumed funding with the UN organization following internal analysis. Amidst the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, UNRWA represents the only source of relief to the majority of its population, the larger part refugees. Over 80% of Gazans have been internally displaced since the beginning of the war, with over 570.000 Palestinians under severe risk of starvation. Defunding UNRWA would represent not only a worsening of this humanitarian crisis in Gaza, but would also affect Palestinian refugees in other UNRWA fields in the region. It is important to highlight that countries that had decided to defund UNRWA, such as Canada and Sweden, recently reverted their decisions and have stepped up with contributions to the organizations.
On January 26, coinciding with Israel’s delivery of the alleged incriminating evidence to UNRWA, the International Court of Justice ruled that there is a plausible claim that the crime of genocide may be perpetrated in Gaza by the Israeli government by, between other means, “Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part”. The deliberate starvation of Gaza constitutes one these inflicted conditions, and by removing the only source of relief to Gazans, western countries risk being complicit to the accusation of genocide, as stated by UN Special rapporteur to Palestine, Francesca Albanese.
The other concerning amendment is Amendment 39 which would call for all recipients of EU funds to the MENA region to sign a document recognizing Israel’s right to exist and condemning antisemitism, and suspending funds to civil society that refuse to sign such a declaration, act against the spirit of such a declaration after signing it, or directly or indirectly contribute to the financing of beneficiaries that act against the spirit of such a declaration.
This amendment represents an escalation in the weaponization of antisemitism accusations by the Israeli government to suppress legitimate criticism at international level. It fails to define antisemitism in constructive ways, giving the opportunity for it being instrumentalized by representing any form of dissent against the Israeli government as an antisemitic act.
It is necessary to also acknowledge that several independent civil society organizations in the MENA region could not officially recognise the state of Israel – even if they were politically aligned to do so – due to
legal limitations in their home countries. Demanding MENA organizations to officially recognize Israel in exchange for funding puts organizations tin an untenable situation, where they must choose between losing vital support or suffering legal repercussions at home.
This kind of one-sided conditionality fails to grasp the complexities of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, which extends far beyond ethnic and religious considerations and is rooted in decades of colonization and oppression. Nor does it seem to consider the growing polarization and the rise of Islamophobia alongside anti-Semitism. Furthermore, it sets a dangerous precedent for restricting freedom of thought and expression.
Many recipients of EU funds in the region are strong advocates of human rights and international law, serving the most vulnerable members of their populations. Any action that jeopardizes their ability to carry out their essential work only serves to undermine the values that the EU claims to uphold.

Moi aussi je roule. Du dimanche comme on dit. Je ne pense jamais à la mort mais je fais gaffe, très gaffe, toujours. Je ne fais aucune confiance à aucun·e automobiliste. La plupart ne regardent pas. La plupart téléphonent. La plupart pensent à autre chose. La plupart voient la voiture comme une extension de leur maison et quand il faut ralentir pour une ou un cycliste, la plupart le voient comme une violation de domicile. Lorsqu’on me coupe la route (si souvent), on me dit (avec sincérité) : « Oh, je ne vous avais pas vu. » Ah ben je suis en rose fluo, ça doit être pour ça. La plupart pensent que tu (leur) encombres la route, que tu gênes leurs arabesques pétaradantes (Porsche) ou sournoisement silencieuses (Tesla). Les automobilistes râlent contre les cyclistes qui font des erreurs (ça arrive), mais les automobilistes ne meurent jamais à cause des erreurs des cyclistes. Ou bien ?

Every few days the country is rocked by the remarks of some person or another condemning Israel’s actions. The latest storm was provoked by the British Jewish director Jonathan Glazer, whose film “The Zone of Interest” won the Oscar this week for best international film.

C’est pourquoi les influenceurs juifs se sont empressés de salir Glazer en le qualifiant de juif qui se hait lui-même et en déformant ses propos – en supprimant notamment les éléments qui ne correspondaient pas à leur programme intéressé et anti-universel.
Faisant référence aux victimes du 7 octobre et de l’attaque israélienne contre Gaza, Glazer a déclaré au public des Oscars : « En ce moment, nous sommes ici en tant qu’hommes et en tant que femmes : En ce moment même, nous sommes ici en tant qu’hommes qui s’opposent au détournement de leur judéité et de l’Holocauste par un régime d’occupation qui a provoqué la mort de tant d’innocents ».
Il s’opposait expressément à ce que sa judéité soit utilisée pour soutenir un génocide.
Il s’est démarqué de nombreux dirigeants et personnalités influentes de la communauté juive qui ont utilisé leur propre judéité pour justifier la violence contre les civils. Il nous rappelait que la leçon de l’Holocauste est que les idéologies ne doivent jamais l’emporter sur notre humanité, ne doivent jamais être utilisées pour rationaliser le mal.
Tout cela représente une énorme menace pour les membres de la communauté juive qui, depuis des décennies, utilisent précisément leur judéité à des fins politiques, pour servir Israël et son projet d’expulser le peuple palestinien de sa patrie historique.
La vraie dépravation morale
Dans un élan de pure inversion accusatoire, par exemple, le rabbin Shmuley Boteach, surnommé par les médias « le rabbin le plus célèbre d’Amérique », a fustigé Glazer pour avoir soi-disant « exploité l’Holocauste » et pour avoir banalisé « la mémoire des 6 millions de victimes grâce auxquelles il a trouvé la gloire à Hollywood ».
Boteach ne peut apparemment pas comprendre que c’est lui, et non Glazer, qui exploite l’Holocauste – dans son cas, depuis des décennies pour protéger Israël de toute critique, même maintenant qu’il commet un génocide.
Batya Ungar-Sargon, journaliste d’opinion à Newsweek, a, quant à elle, rompu avec toutes les règles déontologiques du journalisme pour déformer complètement le discours de Glazer, l’accusant d’être une « pourriture morale » pour avoir soi-disant renié sa judéité.
Alors qu’en fait, comme il l’a très bien expliqué, il rejetait, au contraire, la façon dont son appartenance à la communauté juive et l’Holocauste ont été détournés par des apologistes du génocide tels qu’Ungar-Sargon pour promouvoir un programme idéologique violent.
La rédactrice en chef de Newsweek sait que le discours de Glazer a été le moment le plus écouté et le plus discuté de la cérémonie des Oscars. La plupart de ceux qui ont lu le commentaire de Ungar-Sargon sur Twitter avaient entendu ce que Glazer a dit dans son discours et savaient qu’elle mentait.
De pareilles accusations mensongères auraient dû avoir des conséquences destructrices sur sa carrière professionnelles. Elles auraient dû être une tache sombre sur sa crédibilité journalistique. Et pourtant, Mme Ungar-Sargon a fièrement maintenu son tweet, alors même que X l’avait assorti d’une humiliante note de bas de page : « Les lecteurs ont ajouté… », qui mettait en lumière sa malhonnêteté.
