Resilient Web Design—Introduction
►https://resilientwebdesign.com
With a title like Resilient Web Design, you might think that this is a handbook for designing robust websites. This is not a handbook. It’s more like a history #book.
(…)
But in the world of #web_design, we are mostly preoccupied with the here and now. When we think beyond our present moment, it is usually to contemplate the future—to imagine the devices, features, and interfaces that don’t yet exist. We don’t have time to look back upon our past, and yet the history of web design is filled with interesting ideas.

There are so many ways to visualise #data - how do we
know which one to pick? Use the categories across the
top to decide which data relationship is most important in
your story, then look at the di-erent types of chart within
the category to form some initial ideas about what might
work best. This list is not meant to be exhaustive, nor a
wizard, but is a useful starting point for making
informative and meaningful data visualisations.
]]>Search Risk - How Google Almost Killed ProtonMail - ProtonMail Blog
▻https://protonmail.com/blog/search-risk-google
This incident however highlights a previously unrecognized danger that we are now calling Search Risk. The danger is that any service such as ProtonMail can easily be suppressed by either search companies, or the governments that control those search companies. This can happen even across national borders. For example, even though Google is an American company, it controls over 90% of European search traffic. In this case, Google directly caused ProtonMail’s growth rate worldwide to be reduced by over 25% for over 10 months.
This meant that ProtonMail’s income from users was also cut by 25%, putting financial pressure on our operations.

bookdown: Authoring Books with #R Markdown
▻https://bookdown.org/yihui/bookdown
The bookdown package was built on top of R Markdown (▻http://rmarkdown.rstudio.com), and inherited the simplicity of the #Markdown syntax (you can learn the basics in five minutes; see Section 2.1), as well as the possibility of multiple types of output formats (PDF/HTML/Word/…). It also added features like multi-page HTML output, numbering and cross-referencing figures/tables/sections/equations, inserting parts/appendices, and imported the GitBook style (►https://www.gitbook.com) to create elegant and appealing HTML book pages. This book itself is an example of how you can produce a book from a series of R Markdown documents, and both the printed version and the online version can look professional.

If you know how to use Git, you already know how to use yadm. yadm helps you maintain a single repository of dotfiles, while keeping them where they belong—in $HOME. Anything you can do with Git, you can do using yadm.

Do You Suffer From Decision Fatigue ? - The New York Times
▻http://www.nytimes.com/2011/08/21/magazine/do-you-suffer-from-decision-fatigue.html?_r=0
Spears and other researchers argue that this sort of decision fatigue is a major — and hitherto ignored — factor in trapping people in poverty. Because their financial situation forces them to make so many trade-offs, they have less willpower to devote to school, work and other activities that might get them into the middle class. It’s hard to know exactly how important this factor is, but there’s no doubt that willpower is a special problem for poor people. Study after study has shown that low self-control correlates with low income as well as with a host of other problems, including poor achievement in school, divorce, crime, alcoholism and poor health. Lapses in self-control have led to the notion of the “undeserving poor” — epitomized by the image of the welfare mom using food stamps to buy junk food — but Spears urges sympathy for someone who makes decisions all day on a tight budget. In one study, he found that when the poor and the rich go shopping, the poor are much more likely to eat during the shopping trip. This might seem like confirmation of their weak character — after all, they could presumably save money and improve their nutrition by eating meals at home instead of buying ready-to-eat snacks like Cinnabons, which contribute to the higher rate of obesity among the poor. But if a trip to the supermarket induces more decision fatigue in the poor than in the rich — because each purchase requires more mental trade-offs — by the time they reach the cash register, they’ll have less willpower left to resist the Mars bars and Skittles. Not for nothing are these items called impulse purchases.

A poetic vision of Paris’s crumbling suburban high-rises - The Washington Post
▻https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/in-sight/wp/2015/10/01/a-poetic-vision-of-paris-crumbling-suburban-high-rises
The colossal grands ensembles, or high-rise public housing projects, in Paris and its surrounding banlieues, or suburbs, were built after World War II to accommodate an increasing population of rural migrants and immigrants. Today, the deteriorating buildings are largely considered failed experiments — catalysts for the alienation of their populations and a slew of accompanying social issues. Some are being renovated and reimagined but more still are slated for demolition.
Why Procrastinators Procrastinate - Wait But Why
▻http://waitbutwhy.com/2013/10/why-procrastinators-procrastinate.html
No, “avoid procrastination” is only good advice for fake procrastinators—those people that are like, “I totally go on Facebook a few times every day at work—I’m such a procrastinator!” The same people that will say to a real procrastinator something like, “Just don’t procrastinate and you’ll be fine.”
The thing that neither the dictionary nor fake procrastinators understand is that for a real procrastinator, #procrastination isn’t optional—it’s something they don’t know how to not do.

#D3.js Charts : Towards Updatable Code | Toptal
▻http://www.toptal.com/d3-js/towards-reusable-d3-js-charts
After repeatedly experiencing these limitations firsthand, I wanted to create a way to leverage the full power of D3.js. For example, listening for changes on a dropdown of a completely separate component and seamlessly triggering chart updates from old data to new. I wanted to be able to hand over the chart controls with full functionality, and do so in a way that was logical and modular. The result is an updatable chart pattern, and I’m going to walk through my complete progression to creating this pattern.
