Can journalism funded by private generosity compensate for the decline of the commercial kind?

Readers and advertisers have switched to the internet. Profit margins have shrunk or vanished. Papers are dying and journalists being sacked. Costly foreign and investigative reporting has been particularly squeezed, as has local news. One increasingly popular—if limited—response to these travails is the sort of “philanthro-journalism” long practised elsewhere by the likes of Caucasian Knot.
Thanks to its charitable traditions, this trend is most visible in America. A few philanthropically financed operations have been around for decades, but recently they have been joined by many more. Jan Schaffer of J-Lab, a journalism think-tank at American University in Washington, DC, estimates that American foundations have donated at least $250m to non-profit journalism ventures since 2005.
Many of these, such as the Texas Tribune, cover state politics. The highest-profile is arguably ProPublica, an investigative-reporting unit set up in 2008 with help from the Sandler Foundation. It has already won two Pulitzer prizes. Its managing editor Stephen Engelberg argues that, since investigative journalism is now too expensive to be sustained by commercial business models, it ought to be considered a public good.
The trend is spreading to other countries, including Australia and Britain, where regulators and politicians have fretted about the decline of old-fashioned media without doing much about it. Money from the David and Elaine Potter Foundation is funding the Bureau of Investigative Journalism (BIJ), based at City University in London. Iain Overton, its editor, reckons that many traditional outlets lack the forensic skills, as well as the cash, to crunch data and hold the powerful to account.

There’s talk about a future container hub in an unlikely place – Reykjavik, Iceland.
Gerhardt Muller, retired professor at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, said the shrinking of the polar icecap could eventually provide ocean carriers with an Atlantic-Pacific shortcut through the Arctic Circle.
Speaking at a Transportation Research Forum in Newark, N.J., on the future of the port industry, Muller said he’s heard discussion in Europe that Reykjavik could eventually serve as a hub port for container shipments if a Northwest Passage route ever becomes a reality.
Don’t look for Reykjavik to overtake Singapore or Shanghai anytime soon, however. The Northwest Passage’s shorter distance would reduce carriers’ fuel costs but global warming would have to be much more established trend before anyone takes a plunge on an Arctic Circle route.

Le dimanche 3 juin 2012, dernier jour de la rencontre de #Bilderberg de 2012, le silence médiatique français se poursuit. Alors qu’en Grande-Bretagne The Independent analyse cette réunion avec le titre « Conspiracy theorists join the world’s elite », on ne trouve rien de tel dans la presse française. Pour quelle raison ? Les rencontres de Bilderberg seraient-elles sans importance ? Dans ce cas, pourquoi plusieurs hauts responsables de l’Union Européenne y sont-ils présents, comme souligné dans notre article « Bilderberg 2012 : quels objectifs ? (I) » ?
Force est de constater que Bilderberg rassemble toujours des représentants au plus haut niveau des milieux financiers, industriels, politiques et « gestionnaires » européens et US. Peut-on sérieusement prétendre « qu’il ne se passe rien » à de telles rencontres dont celle de 2012 compte autour de 145 invités ?

Dès lors que les réunions n’aboutissent ni à des décisions ni à des comptes-rendus il n’y a rien à en dire. Tant mieux s’il y a des discussions et des débats au niveau international.* : il y a du boulot, tout ne peut pas se discuter dans des rencontres au sommet.
Et la marmotte, elle met le chocolat dans le papier d’alu...
Il y a des réunions, comme au Siècle, où il est explicitement stipulé dans la charte qu’il ne doit pas y avoir de compte-rendu écrit, ni aucune note de prise.
Et après on dit : « mais non il ne se passe rien lors de ces réunions, on est juste en train de manger ».
Sans pour autant qu’il y est des décisions précises, c’est un même groupe social qui se réunit, qui s’entre-aide et qui se soude autour de réunions de ce genre.

C’est clairement un genre de dumping social par fraude fiscale. A partir du moment où des flux physiques existent, les commerçants n’ont pas d’autre choix que de se soumettre au contrôle des états - en traînant un peu des pieds tant qu’ils peuvent. Par contre en l’absence de flux physiques il y a moyen de se laver les mains de ce qui se passe en ligne et de laisser les états jouer à whack-a-mole à contrôler individuellement une foule bien trop nombreuse pour leurs moyens. C’était déjà le cas pour les services illégaux et ça le sera bientôt aussi pour les services gris - le flyer du peintre moldave sur le réverbère est un marché plus gros qu’on le croirait au premier abord...

WITH a month to go until Mexico’s presidential election, everyone is thinking about politics. Or are they? A new poll asking which news stories have caught people’s attention suggests that campaign hasn’t grabbed everyone. A survey by Inteligencia Publica and Defoe asked people if they had heard about various big stories that had been in the news over the past couple of months. Of the top five, none was related to the election. Here, in order of the proportion of people who said they were aware of the event, are the biggest news stories in Mexico since March 24th:
90%: a visit by Pope Benedict XVI
86%: the ominous rumblings of Popocatépetl, Mexico City’s local volcano
72%: the death of Julio Alemán, a Mexican actor
69%: forest fires near the city of Guadalajara
68%: the death of Carlos Fuentes, a Mexican novelist
The biggest stories that were related to the election were a series of protest marches by students, a video made by an NGO showing children calling for an end to the country’s various problems (54%) and the case of Tomás Yarrington, a former state governor accused of links to organised crime, which he denies (51%).
A healthy reminder, as we head into the weekend, that there is life beyond the campaign trail. We’ll be back next week with more election news.
