Hawking, 71, the world-renowned theoretical physicist and Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge, had accepted an invitation to headline the fifth annual president’s conference, Facing Tomorrow, in June, which features major international personalities, attracts thousands of participants and this year will celebrate Peres’s 90th birthday.
Hawking is in very poor health, but last week he wrote a brief letter to the Israeli president to say he had changed his mind. He has not announced his decision publicly, but a statement published by the British Committee for the Universities of Palestine with Hawking’s approval described it as “his independent decision to respect the boycott, based upon his knowledge of Palestine, and on the unanimous advice of his own academic contacts there”.

Let us reclaim our collective symbolism through St George, who represents what we are today: a mix of opinions, genes, cultural and social influences and even, dare we say it, religious beliefs. Those who deny this, deny their very existence.

As for political violence, people of Christian heritage in the twentieth century polished off tens of millions of people in the two world wars and colonial repression. This massive carnage did not occur because European Christians are worse than or different from other human beings, but because they were the first to industrialize war and pursue a national model. Sometimes it is argued that they did not act in the name of religion but of nationalism. But, really, how naive. Religion and nationalism are closely intertwined.

Il me semble que les religions attachées au pouvoir temporel sont le problème des religions (le bouddhisme n’a été agressif que via le shintô et l’empereur du Japon érigé en nationalisme) et celui des états, le nationalisme.

Bernie Ecclestone has a habit for maladroitness that has become more noticeable as each of his 82 years has passed. But he sounded alarm bells here when he seemingly called the Bahrain government “stupid” for staging a grand prix because of the opportunities it presented to pro-democracy protesters.
It was another race and another gaffe for Formula One’s supremo, who once said Adolf Hitler got things done and who on Friday had suggested everything was OK in Bahrain but that, no, he wouldn’t be staging a race in Syria. (...)
What he actually said to BBC Sport’s Dan Roan, who had asked him if the race had been politicised, was: “We believe the government were in a way really stupid to put this race on [because] it’s a platform for people to use for protesting.”
Ecclestone added: “It [the race] is good. I don’t think it’s for us to decide the politics, good or bad. It’s a good circuit, a good race, and we think everybody’s happy so we’re here.”
When his comments were later repeated in the paddock the country’s crown prince laughed them off: “It’s Bernie being Bernie,” said Prince Salman bin Hamad Isa al-Khalifa on his visit to the track. “I love Bernie and his quotes. I think it’s funny. I have a sense of humour. People will know he’s being sarcastic. I think it’s funny, and I can’t be thankful enough for his support.”

Michael Savage spread ludicrous and wildly dangerous conspiracy theories about Muslims in America. Alex Jones claimed the suspects revealed in FBI photos looked “Israeli.” Glenn Beck wouldn’t let go of his own pet conspiracy theory about a Saudi Arabian.
8. Allegations of hate acts against apparent Muslims. All this misinformation and police overreach has dismaying consequences, including encouraging vigilante actions that are hate crimes plain and simple. As Amanda Terkel explained for the Huffington Post :
[T]hen there was news that a man in Bronx, N.Y., who was born in Bangladesh was beaten up for supposedly being “a f*cking Arab” by a group of men who wanted retribution for the marathon bombing.
A Palestinian woman near Boston also reported being the victim of a hateful assault on Wednesday, when a man hit her and yelled, “F*ck you Muslims! You are terrorists! I hate you! You are involved in the Boston explosions.”

In private conversation members can be quite candid about this and will exhibit a bifurcated approach to their jobs in which the world of gesture-making is divorced from the world of sound policy-making.
Seeing their political careers dependent on playing to audiences, members tend to be quick to brush aside any costs or hazards entailed in the gestures. This is particularly true of sense-of-the-Congress resolutions, which, as proponents of any such resolution can always point out, do not entail any changes carrying the force of law.

Avec son « frère [1] » et son « ami [2] » , Edwy Plenel a accueilli à bras ouvert la holding Artemis de François Pinault, du groupe Pinault-Printemps-Redoute – elle était actionnaire indirecte du journal. Sous leur règne, Publicis, la boîte de pub de Maurice Lévy, possédait la régie du groupe Le Monde, M Publicité, à hauteur de 49 %. De plus, en 1999, Hachette, propriété du marchand d’armes Lagardère, a acquis 34 % du Monde interactif, filiale multimédia du quotidien. Puis, en 2005, Lagardère entrera dans le capital de la holding Le Monde SA. Et c’est le même trio qui, en 2001, a soutenu un projet d’entrée en bourse du quotidien – qui finalement avorta. Cette évolution a « constitué un “putsch […] perpétré tout en douceur” [3]. Elle a rogné significativement le pouvoir des journalistes sur leur journal en permettant une emprise toujours plus grande des actionnaires externes » , constatait en 2007 le site de critique des médias Acrimed [4]. Alain Rollat, journaliste du Monde mis à la porte en 2001, enfonce le clou dans son livre Ma Part du Monde [5], avançant que la direction du journal œuvra « à des restructurations juridiques qui ont mis Le Monde sous la dépendance de ses banquiers, au détriment de la Société des rédacteurs » .
