#Taliban leader bans polio vaccinations in protest at drone strikes | World news | guardian.co.uk
    http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2012/jun/26/taliban-bans-polio-vaccinations

A senior Taliban commander has effectively banned #polio eradication in one of the most troubled areas of the #Pakistan frontier in an effort to force the US to end drone strikes.

Leaflets distributed in South Waziristan on behalf of Mullah Nazir, the leader of the Federally Administered Tribal Agencies (Fata) accused health workers who administer anti-polio drops of being US spies.

“In the garb of these #vaccination campaigns, the US and its allies are running their spying networks in Fata which has brought death and destruction on them in the form of drone strikes,” the leaflet said.

It also questioned the sincerity of international efforts to tackle the highly infectious disease.

“On the one hand, they are killing innocent children in drone strikes, while on the other hand they are saving their lives by vaccinating them,” the printed note said.

Afghan president Karzai: US to cease air strikes on residential areas | World news | guardian.co.uk
    http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2012/jun/10/afghan-president-karzai-air-strikes

The Afghan government has hit out angrily at Nato over the raid, saying that it it violated a pact Kabul had with Washington over who would take the lead in “special operations”.

An inquiry into Wednesday’s attack in Lognar province found that it was the result of “a one-sided decision, and not co-ordinated with Afghan security forces”, President Karzai’s spokesman Aimal Faiz said on Saturday.

Investigators told Karzai that Afghan forces had surrounded the house prior to the American air strike. But US troops decided not to wait for them to try and flush out the alleged militant, opting instead for aerial bombardment.

Ivory Coast mercenaries train child soldiers for attacks across Liberia border | World news | The Guardian
    http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2012/jun/10/ivory-coast-child-soldiers

Militias loyal to the former Ivory Coast president Laurent Gbagbo are recruiting child soldiers in Liberia to launch attacks similar to that which caused the death last week of 15 people, including seven UN peacekeepers.

Child soldiers as young as 14 are being groomed in training camps and used as scouts in increasingly deadly attacks in the volatile west of Ivory Coast, witnesses said. Human Rights Watch said that youths aged between 14 and 17 were being trained.

’Sexual depravity’ of penguins that Antarctic scientist dared not reveal
    ►http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2012/jun/09/sex-depravity-penguins-scott-antarctic

It was the sight of a young male Adélie penguin attempting to have sex with a dead female that particularly unnerved George Murray Levick, a scientist with the 1910-13 Scott Antarctic Expedition. No such observation had ever been recorded before, as far as he knew, and Levick, a typical Edwardian Englishman, was horrified. Blizzards and freezing cold were one thing. Penguin perversion was another.

Worse was to come, however. Levick spent the Antarctic summer of 1911-12 observing the colony of Adélies at Cape Adare, making him the only scientist to this day to have studied an entire breeding cycle there. During that time, he witnessed males having sex with other males and also with dead females, including several that had died the previous year. He also saw them sexually coerce females and chicks and occasionally kill them.

Greek police accused of collaborating with Golden Dawn | World news | The Guardian
    http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2012/jun/08/greek-police-golden-dawn

Constantinou, a tall thin man who has spent years running an organisation that protects migrants is, like a growing number of Greeks, convinced that it is the police who have facilitated Golden Dawn. “Without police cover and protection Golden Dawn would not have survived,” he said. “And the proof of that is the failure to capture Kasidiaris. How is it possible that a man can do what he did in a television studio and yet manage to get away and stay on the run after a state prosecutor has ordered his arrest? The police clearly don’t want to arrest him.”

“Suspicions of the collaboration between the police and Golden Dawn were confirmed at the ballot box in May,” he told the Guardian. “As much as 50% of the police force voted for the party. There might be all the political will to arrest Kasidiarias. But there is a certain level of unwillingness among the police force that will stop that happening.”

A qui profite le trafic de drogues en Colombie ? Olive farmers squeezed as competition and supermarkets push down prices | World news | The Guardian
    http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2012/jun/04/spain-olive-farmers-squeeze-price

Under Spanish competition law it is illegal to sell below cost, he says, but supermarkets get round this by selling at a few cents above the cost price without factoring in transport, labour or fixed capital costs. Olive oil is the loss leader par excellence of Spanish supermarkets.

“In Argentina, Chile and China there are immense plantations with the olives grown on espaliers so they can be harvested mechanically,” says Pere Solé on his farm at La Bisbal del Penedès in Catalonia. “We can’t compete with that.” He explains that it costs him €2.70 to produce a litre of oil with a market value of €2.50. “Olive oil is one of the cheapest products on the market, when you bear in mind that a litre will last you a week or two, unlike a bottle of wine,” he says. “It’s absurdly cheap.”

Western banks ’reaping billions from Colombian cocaine trade’
    http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2012/jun/02/western-banks-colombian-cocaine-trade

The vast profits made from drug production and trafficking are overwhelmingly reaped in rich “consuming” countries – principally across Europe and in the US – rather than war-torn “producing” nations such as Colombia and Mexico, new research has revealed. And its authors claim that financial regulators in the west are reluctant to go after western banks in pursuit of the massive amount of drug money being laundered through their systems.
