Kerry et Hagel ont défendu [aujourd’hui] pendant plusieurs heures devant la commission des Affaires étrangères du Sénat la décision de principe surprise annoncée samedi par le président Barack Obama : procéder à des frappes limitées punitives sur la Syrie, mais pas avant d’avoir obtenu un feu vert du Congrès.

Le patron du Pentagone a expliqué que les objectifs d’une action militaire en Syrie seraient de réduire la capacité du régime syrien à commettre d’autres attaques chimiques et de le dissuader de recourir de nouveau à son arsenal.
Il a plaidé pour une action militaire limitée dans sa durée et sa portée, rappelant qu’il ne s’agit pas de régler le conflit en Syrie par la force militaire directe.
Ça ne semble pas intéresser le média suisse, mais, à la question de savoir si l’administration étasunienne comptait envoyer des troupes au sol, Kerry a répondu....

By “implodes,” he means a situation where Assad loses control of his WMD and we need to go in and grab them before some fanatic native outfit grabs them first. Which is funny because, right offhand, I can’t think of anything that’s more likely to increase the risk of that happening than bombing the hell out of Syrian military units who are in charge of those weapons.
