Lake Urmia in northwest Iran is experiencing its worst drought condition for many years, where over 70 percent of its water has dried up. The level of the water has been declining since 1995.
Debates were organized on the first channel of Iranian state television on the situation at Lake Urmia, Tabnak news website reported on September 24.

During the televised debates, the head of the West Azerbaijan province, Jalalzade said that these days Lake Urmia is in a very critical situation.
“For 30 years, Lake Urmia has been deprived of attention,” he said. “As a result of construction of dams and climate change, some 70 percent of the lake has dried up and all forces should be mobilized for rescuing the lake.”
Representative of the Iranian parliament Hagigatpur noted that Lake Urmia is missing 14 million cubic meters of water.
As the main reasons for this situation, Hagigatpur showed the increase of sowing areas from 110,000 hectares to 450,000 hectares, the construction of dams, the occurrence of more than 30,000 water wells around as the main reasons of this situation.

Even though the Lake Urmia started to shrivel in the 1970s, it could attract the attention of media only in 1990s. The deterioration of the lake was undeniable. The lake was not only shrinking, but also being heavily contaminated. The existence of many basin communities was at stake. Many had to migrate to large cities such as Tabriz. Some resisted to the increasing impoverishment. It was only in the 2000s when the social problems clustered around the issue of the lake were first pronounced. Guntay, a young Azeri man from Tabriz, indicates that the first time he and his friends brought the issue of Lake Urmia was about ten years ago in an exhibition. “We exposed the photos of dead flamingos in the lake to say that it was dying”.
Within years, numerous symbolic protests went on with growing participation of both the inhabitants of the region and the environmentalists from different parts of Iran. One was in 2009 when people held an interesting protest which consisted of pouring a bottle of water into the lake that represents their tear drops for what has been happening to their lake.

Dans un autre registre Hülegü premier des Il-khanides et conquérant de Bagdad (1258) a été enterré en 1265 à Kaboudi, l’une des 102 (à quelle date ?) îles du lac. Mais, apparemment, comme pour son grand-père Chinggis Khan, l’emplacement n’est pas connu.

Hulagu Khan died in 1265 and was buried in the Kaboudi Island in Lake Urmia. His funeral was the only Ilkhanid funeral to feature human sacrifice (Morgan 1986, 139). He was succeeded by his son Abaqa, thus establishing his line.
