Germany sees asylum requests soar in 2014
In Germany, asylum applications rose by 59% in the first six months of 2014, reaching 77.109 requests. According to data released by the Federal Ministry of the Interior, the large majority of asylum seekers come from Syria, nearly 13,000 people (as triple as they were in the first semester of the last year). On the other hand, the number of those from Russia sharply decreased from 10,000 down to 2,865. The Federal Office for Migration and Refugees processed over 60,000 requests and e granted 11,828 persons the status of political refugee, however 112,000 requests are still to process. The number of so-called ‘welfare tourists’ (people from safe countries who try to get benefits from German welfare) remains high, with around 20,000 asylum seekers from Serbia, Albania, Croatia and Bosnia.
