There were some four movies and plays about Elie Cohen (whose tale was largely fictitious and whose contributions were very highly exaggerated and whose exploits were really invented by the Mossad to cover up their failures) and I doubt that there will be one movie about this Israeli spy for Iran. Notice how muted the Western coverage of the case has been. This is the biggest but certainly not the only intelligence penetration of the Israeli military-political establishment. The New York Times in its coverage today made the story about the great Mossad adventure in...arresting the guy and not in Iran’s recruitment of the former Israeli minister.

US media coverage of Lebanese election only sees foes of Hizbullah. Yesterday, NYT published a fawning profile of a convicted (and jailed) drug dealer, Yahya Shamas, just because he is running against Hizbullah and presented him as the hope of change and rule of law (although he is aligned with the corrupt Hariri movement in the region), while the Wall Street Journal today presented an insignificant cleric, Abbas Jawhari, with a long sheet of drug charges (and who was recently arrested) as “influential”. For Western media, anyone running against Hizbullah must be a good person.

Something is going on. I have been receiving from #Google messages that I have violated their rules here on my blog. And today I received this warning from #Facebook that I used “abusive material” in a post. I looked below and found a post about the assassination of a Palestinian academic in Malaysia and a reference to the Mossad. Basically, I hurt the feelings of the #Mossad in the post. It is clear that the political sphere of expression for Arabs on social media is increasingly controlled and limited by the Israeli government.

This mansion in Hayy Talbiyyah in Jerusalem was stolen by Zionist gangs in 1948 from its owner Hanna Bisharat (he was the uncle of the mother of a very dear friend). L’utilisation d’armes chimiques par le régime syrien fait sens dans ce contexte, d’un double point de vue militaire et stratégique :
• tactiquement, l’utilisation de telles munitions permet de déloger des combattants ennemis abrités dans des habitations afin d’engager le combat urbain dans les conditions les plus avantageuses pour le régime ; cette utilisation constitue un accélérateur de conquête et un démultiplicateur d’effet visant à faire tomber au plus vite le dernier bastion des groupes armés ;
• stratégiquement, l’utilisation d’armes chimiques, notamment au chlore, documentée depuis le début 2018 dans la Ghouta orientale, a notamment pour objectif de punir les populations civiles présentes dans les zones tenues par des combattants opposés au régime, et de provoquer sur elles un effet de terreur et de panique incitant à la reddition ; alors que la guerre n’est pas terminée pour le régime, il s’agit, par des frappes indiscriminées, de démontrer que toute résistance est inutile et de préparer la réduction des dernières poches.
• Depuis 2012, les schémas tactiques des forces armées syriennes sont récurrents : les toxiques chimiques sont principalement utilisés dans le cadre d’offensives urbaines massives, comme cela a été le cas à la fin de l’année 2016 pour la reprise d’Alep, où des munitions au chlore étaient régulièrement associées à l’armement conventionnel ; les zones visées, telle la Ghouta orientale, sont en outre toutes des objectifs militaires importants de Damas.

3. – Les services français ne disposent d’aucune information permettant d’étayer la thèse selon laquelle les groupes armés dans la Ghouta auraient cherché à se procurer ou auraient disposé d’armes chimiques.
Ils estiment par ailleurs qu’une manipulation des images diffusées massivement à partir du samedi 7 avril n’est pas crédible, dans la mesure notamment où les groupes présents dans la Ghouta n’ont pas les moyens de mener une manœuvre de communication d’une telle ampleur.

II. – DEPUIS AVRIL 2017, LE REGIME SYRIEN A MULTIPLIE LES CAS D’UTILISATION D’ARMES CHIMIQUES ET DE SUBSTANCES TOXIQUES DANS LE CADRE DE SES ACTIONS MILITAIRES.
1. – Le régime syrien a préservé depuis 2013 un programme chimique clandestin.

Depuis 2014, la mission d’établissement des faits de l’OIAC (Fact Finding Mission, FFM) a rendu publics plusieurs rapports confirmant l’emploi d’armes chimiques en Syrie contre des civils. Le mécanisme d’enquête et d’attribution ONU-OIAC sur les attaques chimiques (Joint Investigation Mechanism, JIM) a enquêté sur neuf allégations d’emploi. Dans ses rapports d’août et d’octobre 2016, le JIM attribue à Damas trois cas d’utilisation de chlore et un cas d’utilisation d’ypérite à Daech, aucune à un groupe armé syrien.

2. – Une série d’attaques chimiques est intervenue en Syrie depuis le 4 avril 2017
Une évaluation nationale française publiée le 26 avril 2017 à la suite de l’attaque de Khan Cheïkhoun recense l’ensemble des attaques chimiques en Syrie depuis 2012, et l’estimation par les services français de leur probabilité. Cette attaque menée en deux temps à Latamneh le 30 mars, puis à Khan Cheïkhoun avec du gaz sarin le 4 avril, avait occasionné la mort de plus de 80 civils. Les autorités françaises avaient estimé très probable la responsabilité des forces armées et de sécurité syriennes dans cette attaque.

Les services français ont recensé 44 allégations de recours à des armes chimiques et substances toxiques en Syrie depuis le 4 avril 2017, date de l’attaque au sarin de Khan Cheïkhoun. Parmi ces 44 allégations, les services français estiment que les éléments rassemblés au sujet de 11 attaques permettent de présumer de leur nature chimique. Du chlore aurait été utilisé dans la majorité des cas ; les services soupçonnent également le recours à un neurotoxique le 18 novembre 2017 à Harasta.

On notera dans ce contexte une recrudescence notable des cas d’emploi après le non renouvellement du mandat du mécanisme d’enquête conjoint OIAC-ONU (JIM) en novembre 2017, en raison du véto de la Russie au CSNU. Une multiplication des attaques au chlore depuis le début de l’offensive de la Ghouta orientale a été clairement constatée et établie.

The BBC has obtained leaked emails that show a lobbying effort to get US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson sacked for failing to support the United Arab Emirates against regional rival Qatar.
Major Trump fundraiser and UAE-linked businessman Elliott Broidy met Mr Trump in October 2017 and urged him to sack Mr Tillerson, the emails reveal.
In other emails, he calls the top US diplomat “a tower of Jello”, “weak” and says he “needs to be slammed”.
Mr Broidy says Qatar hacked his emails.
“We have reason to believe this hack was sponsored and carried out by registered and unregistered agents of Qatar seeking to punish Mr Broidy for his strong opposition to state-sponsored terrorism,” a spokesman for the businessman said.
He said some of the emails “may have been altered” but did not elaborate.
Saudi Arabia, UAE and a number of Arab countries cut diplomatic ties with Qatar in June 2017 over its alleged support for terrorism, a claim which it denies. The unprecedented move was seen as a major split between powerful Gulf countries, who are also close US allies.

The BBC has asked the Qatar embassy in Washington for a response to the accusations.
Mr Broidy’s defence company Circinus has hundreds of millions of dollars worth of contracts with the UAE, according to the New York Times newspaper.
He had recently returned from the UAE when he met Mr Trump at the White House in October.
What did the emails say?
According to a memorandum he prepared of the meeting, Mr Broidy urged continued support of US allies the UAE and Saudi Arabia and advised Mr Trump against getting involved in last year’s row with Qatar.
Mr Broidy called Qatar “a television station with a country” - alluding to broadcaster Al Jazeera - and said it was doing “nothing positive”, according to the emails.
He said he touted a regional counter-terrorism force being set up by the UAE that his company was involved with, and suggested that the US president “sit down” with Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nahyan, the crown prince of Abu Dhabi and a top UAE military commander.
“I offered that MBZ [the crown prince] is available to come to the US very soon and preferred a quiet meeting in New York or New Jersey. President Trump agreed that a meeting with MBZ was a good idea,” Mr Broidy wrote in an email.
He also said he advised the president on Mr Tillerson - who was “performing poorly and should be fired at a politically convenient time”.
Mr Tillerson had criticised the blockade of Qatar and called for it to be eased, in comments that contrasted with Mr Trump’s support for the move.
Mr Tillerson spent most of the first year in his position embattled and weakened.
Last autumn, in a rare move for the soft-spoken secretary, the state department held a press conference in which Mr Tillerson pushed back against reports he had called the president “a moron”.
Who did Mr Broidy email?
He emailed a detailed account of his meeting with the president to George Nader, a Lebanese-American businessman with decades of experience serving as an interlocutor between the Middle East and Washington.
Sources familiar with the investigation of Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who is looking into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 US election and possible links between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin, tell the BBC that Mr Nader has become a person of interest and has been questioned in recent weeks.
Investigators questioned Mr Nader and other witnesses on whether there were any efforts by the Emiratis to buy political influence by directing money to Mr Trump’s presidential campaign, according to a New York Times report.

What else was in the leaked emails?
Mr Broidy also detailed a separate sit-down with Mr Trump’s son-in-law and adviser Jared Kushner, according to the emails.
After Mr Broidy criticised Qatar extensively to Mr Kushner, “Jared’s demeanour was very passive and pleasant but he seemed to not want to engage on this issue,” he wrote to Mr Nader.
Kushner Companies - owned by the family of Jared Kushner - is reported to have in April 2017 sought financing from Qatar for its flagship property at 666 5th Avenue, New York.
However, Mr Kushner has maintained that he has had no role in his family’s business since joining the White House last year.
Has anyone else claimed to have been hacked?
UAE ambassador to Washington Yousef al-Otaiba - who in diplomatic circles is known as the most effective and influential ambassador in Washington - has himself been a recent victim of email hacking.
It’s well known in Washington that Mr Otaiba and Mr Kushner have enjoyed close relationship.
Industry experts looking at both hacks have drawn comparisons between the two, showing reason to suspect links to Qatar.
“This is rinse and repeat on Otaiba,” a source familiar with the hack told the BBC.
The UAE has also been known to use similar tactics, and was accused of hacking Qatari government websites prior to the blockade, according to the FBI.
