The natural gas bills of 1.7 million households were not paid on time last year, causing temporary gas cuts in some regions, according to the Energy Market Regulatory Agency (EPDK).

The majority of gas cuts in 2013 were caused by late payment of bills, accounting for 1.2 million homes. According to the agency, there were 1.4 million temporary gas cuts in total, 79.7 percent of which were due to late payments. However, the number of houses experiencing gas cuts due to late payments saw a decrease of nearly 4 percent year-on-year in 2013.

Analysts warn of further deterioration in the purchasing power of Turkish consumer amid recent hikes in food and housing prices.

According to data from the Turkish Statistics Institute (TurkStat), Turkish households allocated the highest share of their income — 25 percent — to housing expenditures in 2013 while the share of food and non-alcoholic beverages was 19.9 percent. Transportation as a share of total household spending was 17.9 percent in 2013. Adding transportation expenditures — the third largest item in household spending – to food and rent, the TurkStat report reveals that Turks pay 62.3 percent of their income for the basic needs of food, housing and transportation in daily life
