The show, “The Balustrades of Beirut,” is the work of Mazen Haidar, an architect specializing in conservation. After living and studying in Italy for over a decade, he returned to Beirut in 2010 and was horrified by how many of city’s historic buildings had been razed. “I felt traumatized by the lack of effective laws and also society’s apathy towards its cultural heritage being demolished.”

Hundreds of protesters rallied in front of French cultural institutes across Lebanon Thursday to denounce the recent delays in the release Lebanese leftist Georges Abdallah, who has been jailed in France for 28 years

French institutes in Saida, Tripoli, Nabatiyeh, Baalbek and Tyre were all closed in anticipation of the protests. Supporters of Abdallah held banners denouncing what they call a politicization of justice.

Several hundred protesters gathered outside the French embassy in Beirut Monday to demonstrate against the postponed release of former Marxist rebel Georges Ibrahim Abdallah.

Some demonstrators began hurling eggs and rocks at the embassy after shutting down traffic to demand the political prisoner’s immediate release following his 28-year imprisonment in France.

Palestinians Friday morning inaugurated a tent village named Bab al-Shams in an area near Jerusalem referred to by Israelis as E1, defying an immediate eviction notice from the Israeli civil administration and military.

The new village of Bab al-Shams, named after a famous novel by Elias Khoury about the Palestinian right of return, comprises 23 tents, with two more being set up, and roughly 250 Palestinians who have proclaimed residency there.

The tent village consists of a Municipality office where the village council will meet, a clinic, a media office, and a kitchen.

I first heard of Femen when they protested in Paris by wearing burqas and then stripping them off, to reveal their naked bodies underneath. This protest was aimed specifically at the Muslim community. Femen claimed that the veil and the burqa should be seen as intrinsically oppressive, and encouraged Muslim women to “free themselves” by stripping. This is apparent from both their protest actions as well as the slogans they use, including “Muslim Women! Let’s get Naked.” Femen have also made problematic statements about Arabs,such as: “As a society we haven’t been able to eradicate our Arab mentality towards women.” The slogan and statement point towards a specific view of Arab and Muslim women that forms part of Femen’s activism and ideology.

What struck me at the time was the underlying assumption that Femen was operating on, namely that female liberation can be directly linked to what women wear. This is not a new idea, and in fact has formed the basis of much of western feminism. One of the most prominent examples is the way the French state produced Algeria as a backwards country because Algerian women veiled. This type of logic automatically leads to the conclusion that in order to progress, women who veil must unveil, and therefore “free” themselves.

They are the side acts of a free performance choreographed by Cornelia Krafft. Salome Versus Bluebeard and will be showing at Masrah-Al-Madina on the 1st and 2nd of December, dedicated to a local NGO against gender-based violence, Kafa.

The Lebanese coast is almost 220 kilometers long. It should be a source of wealth for Lebanon and a common space for its citizens, as well as provide a competitive advantage on the regional level. Instead, the coast is subject to constant violations, including 1,140 encroachments along the beachfront – an average of 5.18 intrusions per kilometer. Only 73 of those are ‘licensed.’The report estimates the total occupied beach and sea area to be over 2,535,788 square meters, in addition to around 1,356,938 million square meters of ‘licensed’ occupations.

There are many views of the sheikh in northern Lebanon. Critics say he is the new leader of al-Qaeda in Lebanon and a threat to Tripoli’s security, while supporters counter that he is the city’s protector.

These contradictory views of Sabbagh differ according to the political background of those expressing them, although the sheikh is known to have moved decisively into the camp of jihadi Salafism.

Sur cette place emblématique de la capitale flottaient des drapeaux libanais et ceux de la révolution syrienne, des étendards bleus du Courant du Futur du chef de l’opposition Saad Hariri, ou rouges du Parti socialiste progressiste du chef druze Walid Joumblatt, un virulent contempteur du président syrien. La majorité des manifestants sont des sunnites, communauté à laquelle appartenait le défunt, des chrétiens et des druzes.

Hé bien alors, ami journaliste, c’est tout ce que tu as vu ? Tu fais un blocage sur le noir ? Une perte de vision partielle ? Tu ne l’as pas vu, l’autre drapeau ? Je sais bien qu’en Libye et en Syrie, tu avais déjà beaucoup de mal à le repérer, même quand il était au centre de l’image, mais là il faut faire un effort.

Je me demande si un seul quotidien mainstream français parlera de la présence des drapeaux d’Al Qaeda hier en plein cœur de Beyrouth ?

(Tu peux le tourner comme tu veux, mais tu peux être certain qu’« en face », au Liban, ils l’ont bien vu, ce drapeau. Et que ça ne va pas calmer les esprits. Et que la, hum, « myopie » des médias et des chancelleries ne va pas renforcer leur confiance dans la bonne volonté occidentale.)

Islam has long served as a rich reservoir for sci-fi authors building complex and foreign worlds, with Frank Herbert’s 1966 Dune including dozens of allusions to Arabic terms, according to the Baheyeldin Dynasty blog. In an interview with Al-Akhbar, Hurley said that she wanted to escape the “old ‘atheist white guys in space’ narrative” that is so common in science fiction. She did just that through extensive research on topics as vast as guerrilla warfare and Assyria, as well as creating strong female and religious characters that fit well into a vaguely Muslim world. As God’s War shows, building a believable fantasy universe that alludes to Islam takes more effort than just throwing in a mosque and setting your novel in a desert.

The intent of U.S. [Unconventional Warfare] UW efforts is to exploit a hostile power’s political, military, economic, and psychological vulnerabilities by developing and sustaining resistance forces to accomplish U.S. strategic objectives…For the foreseeable future, U.S. forces will predominantly engage in irregular warfare (IW) operations.

So begins the 2010 Unconventional Warfare (UW) Manual of the US Military’s Special Forces. The manual attached here (TC 18-01) is an interim publication, developed to address the definition of Unconventional Warfare and some other inconsistencies in UW Doctrine. The new UW document (ATP 3-05.1) is in the initial draft and not yet available, though sources tell me it is unlikely to differ much from TC 18-01.

Le 18 avril, le bombardement commence aux alentours de 14 heures et dure un peu moins de 20 minutes. Israël attribue le bombardement à une erreur de tir, des éléments du Hezbollah se trouvant à proximité du camp. Le gouvernement israélien note que des miliciens du Hezbollah se trouvaient dans le camp tout en précisant que ce fait n’est pas à l’origine du bombardement (à noter que l’ONU a confirmé cette déclaration tout en spécifiant que ces miliciens étaient désarmés et ont pu entrer avant comme après le bombardement). Les premiers témoignages indiquent qu’un drône israélien survolait le camp, tandis que 2 hélicoptères survolaient les entourages. Le gouvernement israélien dément alors la présence d’aéronefs dans le secteur.

Quelques jours plus tard, un enregistrement vidéo amateur filmé par un casque bleu fidjien montre qu’un drône se trouvait bien au-dessus du camp. Le film contredit les déclarations initiales du gouvernement israélien et plonge le gouvernement israélien dans l’embarras. Israël affirme alors que le champ de vision du drône était réduit et ne permettait pas de voir ce qui se passait dans le camp et que les premières déclarations officielles avaient eu lieu hâtivement alors que l’enquête interne de l’armée n’était pas achevée.

Nose Job Scandal Topples Egyptian Salafi MP

Al-Balkimy fabricated a story about getting attacked by gunmen on the highway to cover up the fact that he had a nose job, something that his party strictly prohibits.

After two days of mutual accusations between the Salafi al-Nour party and the administration of Salma Hospital, where the MP had his plastic surgery, al-Balkimy settled the whole issue by leaking to the press the text of his resignation from the party and parliament.
