In the last two weeks, a group of students and professional performers have been invading the streets of Ras Beirut enacting this performance at nearly every corner.

Women on a leash, people who drop “dead” on the floor against the backdrop of a body chalk outline- like in a crime scene, and so on. They are the side acts of a free performance choreographed by Cornelia Krafft. Salome Versus Bluebeard and will be showing at Masrah-Al-Madina on the 1st and 2nd of December, dedicated to a local NGO against gender-based violence, Kafa.

July War: Returning To The Scene

In 2007, Marwan Tahtah decided to commemorate the July War by revisiting and reviving the scenes he captured he took in 2006. Now, five years later, he decided to finish his project. Tahtah tracked down the people and the locations he had photographed five and six years previously and shot the scene one more time.

Et toujours, le négationnisme systématique d’Israël face à ses crimes de guerre.

Le 18 avril, le bombardement commence aux alentours de 14 heures et dure un peu moins de 20 minutes. Israël attribue le bombardement à une erreur de tir, des éléments du Hezbollah se trouvant à proximité du camp. Le gouvernement israélien note que des miliciens du Hezbollah se trouvaient dans le camp tout en précisant que ce fait n’est pas à l’origine du bombardement (à noter que l’ONU a confirmé cette déclaration tout en spécifiant que ces miliciens étaient désarmés et ont pu entrer avant comme après le bombardement). Les premiers témoignages indiquent qu’un drône israélien survolait le camp, tandis que 2 hélicoptères survolaient les entourages. Le gouvernement israélien dément alors la présence d’aéronefs dans le secteur.

Quelques jours plus tard, un enregistrement vidéo amateur filmé par un casque bleu fidjien montre qu’un drône se trouvait bien au-dessus du camp. Le film contredit les déclarations initiales du gouvernement israélien et plonge le gouvernement israélien dans l’embarras. Israël affirme alors que le champ de vision du drône était réduit et ne permettait pas de voir ce qui se passait dans le camp et que les premières déclarations officielles avaient eu lieu hâtivement alors que l’enquête interne de l’armée n’était pas achevée.

Barakat Building : A Reminder of The Past – photos : Marwan Tahtah | Al Akhbar English

Barakat Building stands as a memory of 15 years of civil war. A scar in the heart of Beirut that stands to remind the population of the atrocities that were committed between 1975 and 1990.

The building is now said to be transformed into a museum to keep the memory alive. A memory of a time that still haunts us decades after, and a memory of a dying architectural heritage.

The building was first built by architect Youssif Aftimos, then Fouad Jozah added two stories onto the building in 1932. Its neo-Ottoman design is a rare sight, nowadays, in the new skyscraper setting of Beirut.

Des bâtiments en ruine au Liban, ça ne manque pas. Celui-ci cependant est emblématique de la guerre à Beyrouth.

Il me semble que la laideur générale de la reconstruction et le néolibéralisme de la spéculation immobilière, en achevant de détruire les sublimes maisons libanaises de Beyrouth, ont donné un sens supplémentaire à cet immeuble.
