Marine accused in killing of 24 Iraqis in Haditha makes plea deal
    http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lanow/2012/01/plea-bargain-reached-to-end-marine-trial-in-iraqi-killings.htm

Wuterich will plead guilty to a single count of negligent dereliction of duty. Other charges were dropped. No announcement was made on what kind of discharge Wuterich would receive.

The maximum sentence is three months in the brig. That decision will be made by the judge.

When the smoke cleared, Wuterich’s squad had killed 24 Iraqis, including three women and seven children, in a fruitless effort to find the gunmen that the Marines believed was firing on them from a house near the bomb blast.

Church of England ’must accept actively gay clergy’ | World news | The Guardian
    http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2012/jan/20/church-england-accept-gay-clergy

Diarmaid MacCulloch, professor of the history of the church at the University of Oxford and presenter of BBC4’s A History of Christianity, writes in the Guardian that while there has been a revolution in attitudes towards gay people in the UK, “the church has just stuck its fingers in its ears and chanted la-la-la”. He asks: “When will the Church of England wake up to what has become apparent to the rest of the nation?”

Egypt’s Coptic pope celebrates Christmas with call for unity | World news | guardian.co.uk
    http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2012/jan/07/egyptian-copts-christmas-uk-fears

At the start of the festive celebrations in Egypt, prominent figures from across the political spectrum, including leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood and members of the ruling military council, attended Friday night mass at Cairo’s main Coptic cathedral.

The Coptic pope, Shenouda III, commended their presence and appealed for national unity for “the sake of Egypt”.

He said: “For the first time in the history of the cathedral, it is packed with all types of Islamist leaders in Egypt. They all agree ... on the stability of this country, and in loving it and working for it, and to work with the Copts as one hand for the sake of Egypt.”

Coca-Cola accused of propping up notorious Swaziland dictator | World news | The Guardian

Coca-Cola has been accused of propping up one of Africa’s most notorious dictators.

The multibillion dollar beverage company owns a concentrate-manufacturing plant in Swaziland, an impoverished kingdom ruled by Africa’s last absolute monarch, Mswati III.

The king has travelled to Coca-Cola’s headquarters in Atlanta in the US, much to the disgust of Swazi political activists who blame him for human rights abuses and looting the nation’s wealth.

Mary Pais Da Silva, co-ordinator of the Swaziland Democracy Campaign, called for Coca-Cola to pull out of the country immediately.

“Coca-Cola must know they’re doing business with the wrong people,” she said. “At the end of the day it doesn’t benefit the economy in any way. Their profits don’t help the average Swazi, while the king is getting richer by the day.” She added: “The king is milking the country. This is entrenching him more and more, giving him economic strength to crush opposition. Nobody should do business with the regime in Swaziland. They should cut ties and take their business elsewhere.”

Mswati III has 13 wives and hosts an annual dance where he can choose a new bride from tens of thousands of bare-breasted virgins.

With a fortune of about $100m (£64m), he presides over one of the worst-off countries in the world, with most people living in absolute poverty. Political parties are banned and activists are regularly arrested, imprisoned and tortured.

#Coca-Cola says that Mswati III does not receive any profits or dividends from its #Swaziland operation, its biggest in Africa. But some activists estimate that Coca-Cola, the world’s biggest beverage company, contributes as much as 40% of the country’s GDP. The company admits it cannot account for how the money it pays in taxes is used by the Swazi government.

Afghan child bride had escaped torturers but was sent back | World news | guardian.co.uk
    http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2012/jan/02/afghan-girl-escaped-torturers-sent-back

A 15-year-old Afghan girl who was nearly tortured to death by her husband and his family attempted to escape her attackers more than four months ago but was sent back home by local authorities, it has emerged.

Sahar Gul, a child-bride married off to a soldier called Gulam Sakhi who then tried to force her into prostitution, is being treated for horrific injuries in a hospital in Kabul after she was rescued last week.

During her ordeal several of her fingernails were ripped out with pliers and one of her ears was badly burned by an iron. Her husband is now on the run, and her mother-in-law and sister-in-law have been arrested.

Abdullah Fahim, a senior adviser to the minister of public health, said the case was part of the “bitter reality” of Afghanistan.

“We have several cases like this, especially in remote parts of the country where there is not a strong attitude to women’s rights,” he said.

He added that the ministry had dedicated a team of psychiatrists to the girl: “Her physical wounds are getting better day by day, but we are very concerned about her mental condition because she has been tortured for a long period of time.”

The law on the elimination of violence against women was passed more than two years ago and criminalised many abuses for the first time, including domestic violence and child marriage.

But a recent UN report found only a small percentage of reported crimes against women are pursued by the Afghan government.

Immunisation push propels India towards victory in war against polio | World news | The Guardian
    http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2012/jan/02/india-winning-war-against-polio

Moradabad has long been the centre of one of the most stubborn concentrations of polio in India.

The disease is passed on by person-to-person contact and, with Moradabad’s poor inhabitants frequently travelling far across the country in search of work, outbreaks elsewhere have often been traced back to the city.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) stipulates that three years must pass without any cases of polio occurring before a region can be declared polio-free.

In India, a mass vaccination campaign involving more than a million volunteers reduced cases nationally by 94% between 2009 and 2010, from 741 to 42, and down to the single case last year.

The success is due to a combination of highly motivated local workers, philanthropy, the involvement of international health bodies and the sometimes inefficient but nonetheless essential support of local government.

Equally important in overcoming the last bastions of the disease, as in many parts of the world, has been the consent of local religious figures.

Over the past decade one of the biggest obstacles to polio eradication in India, as in Pakistan and Nigeria, has been the resistance of poor, largely illiterate Muslim communities such as those in and around Moradabad.

Even as the first campaigns got underway in the area in the late 1990s, local clerics began telling congregations that the vaccinations were part of a government plan, backed by the west, to make Muslim women infertile.

Dead herring mystery for Norway as thousands wash up on beach | World news | The Guardian
    http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2012/jan/02/dead-herring-norway-beach-nordreisa

❝Norwegians have been left puzzled at the sight of thousands of dead herring carpeting a beach in the northerly district of Nordreisa with some wondering if a predator had driven them to their death or a storm had washed them ashore.

Scientists were hoping to test the fish to see if they could ascertain the cause of death. Locals had more pressing concerns: how to clean up the 20 tonnes of dead creatures before they decay.

For doom-mongers, the fish were the second a sign in as many days that 2012 would live up to the apocalyptic prediction of the ancient Mayans, after hundreds of blackbirds reportedly dropped dead in Arkansas.
