Philadelphia schools to lay off nearly 4,000 teachers

On Friday, the superintendent of the Philadelphia School District (SDP), William Hite, Jr., announced plans to lay off nearly 4,000 educators in the coming months. The destruction of teachers' jobs comes as part of a “doomsday” austerity budget in the public school system that was passed several weeks ago by the School Reform Commission (SRC), which is appointed dually by the state and the city to oversee its public schools.

When and how did you first become involved in the Israel-Palestinian—or, at the time—Zionist, issue? I grew up with it. My parents were part of what amounted to a cultural ghetto, not a physical ghetto, which was the Philadelphia Jewish community. It had many parts, but the part they were deeply involved in was the revival of Hebrew cultural centers, especially Hebrew education. I became conscious of this in the early 1930s. My father was pretty much a disciple of Ahad Ha'am, whose version of Zionism was a cultural center for Jews in Palestine. My mother as well, and their circle of friends and associates was pretty similar. I went to Hebrew school and Hebrew college, and when I was old enough I started teaching at Hebrew school. I was an organizer of what were then called Zionist youth groups, which I suppose would now be called anti-Zionist, because they were mostly opposed to a Jewish state. The poster, titled “Fashion Law”, takes the distinctive LV monogram and replaces its iconography with copyright and trademark symbols. The symposium takes place March 20 in Philadelphia.
In a reply to Pantalony, the University's general counsel denied that the poster infringed LV's trademarks, describing the laws that establish the public right to parody—especially for noncommercial and educational purposes. He also invited Pantalony to attend the symposium so that he may learn more about intellectual property.

JOHN TIMONEY, until recently chief of police of Miami and, before that, Philadelphia, formerly of New York City, where he was also a high-ranking cop, is heading to Bahrain to train the cops there, according to the Associated Press.
If you happen to know anybody from Bahrain who might be thinking that hiring this New Yorker could be a step in the direction of less massacre-oriented policing policies, this might be a good time to relieve them of any such illusions.

Because they were peacefully blocking roads, they were violently attacked by thousands of cops with massive amounts of tear gas and other weapons. In another part of town (Nike Town), a couple hundred people destroyed corporate property, were declared to be violent anarchists and got massive amounts of media attention. The police chased them around, but could never seem to catch them. Nobody got hurt in Nike Town other than the violent anarchists.

Tonight, Occupy Philly will be holding a candlelight vigil for non-violence. The Facebook page for this even reads, “We invite our allies and friends to join us in expressing our earnest desire for continued nonviolence and an ongoing, peaceful dialogue with the City of Philadelphia.” It is unclear to me what use this language serves in light of recent events. While a candlelight vigil against the physical assaults on our comrades in New York, Oakland and elsewhere makes sense, the simple fact of the matter is that the vast majority of violence that has been committed at Occupy protests nationally has been committed not by Occupiers, but by authorities such as the police, in apparent collusion with the federal government. So why is the candlelight vigil directed primarily at us? What use does it serve?

We in in Philadelphia have so far been left alone, more or less, by the police. This will inevitably not last. However, our brothers and sisters around the country and the world have not been so lucky, and they have been fighting back. Who are any of we to judge what they need to do to continue this movement?
