❝Chaos reigned during the early phase of the Fukushima nuclear disaster, and people who fled the area have no idea how much radiation they were exposed to before the evacuation. But a scientist has come up with a novel approach to better evaluate their radiation doses by utilizing the logs of GPS-equipped cellphones.

Ryugo Hayano, a physics professor at the University of Tokyo, said he got the idea when he learned that Zenrin DataCom Co., a geographical information service firm, had acquired anonymous-format location logs of Global Positioning System-enabled cellphones with the consent of their users.

Netanyahou donne des leçons de science à Stephen Hawking

❝Asked by The Jerusalem Post about Hawking’s boycott at a press briefing, Netanyahu said, “He should investigate the truth, he is a scientist. He should study the facts and draw the necessary conclusions: Israel is an island of reason, moderation and a desire for peace.”

Netanyahu said that Hawking knows that there are many false théories in science. “There are also false theories in politics, and this [the slandering of Israel] is one of them, maybe the foremost among them,” he said.❞

Le Ha'aretz tente de relativiser l'acte de Stephen Hawking en accusant les pro-droit international de "bombardement"...

❝The media's reports Wednesday that Professor Stephen Hawking would not be attending the President's Conference in Israel next month prompted many to accuse the world-renowned scientist of anti-Semitism.

Hawking, however, has already visited Israel four times, including the last time, in 2006, at the invitation of the British Embassy. During that trip, he visited universities in Israel and the Palestinian Authority and said he hoped to meet Israeli and Palestinian scientists.

According to a report in the Guardian, ever since Hawking's participation in the conference was made known some four weeks ago, he has been bombarded with countless emails and letters from Britain and other places in the world, calling on him to revoke his decision.

In view of Hawking's previous visits to Israel, however, it would be difficult to brand him anti-Semitic. Perhaps he just wanted to avoid the headache involved in any visit to Israel by a well-known scientist or performer.

Among those fighting to thwart the repeated attempts, especially in Britain, to boycott universities in Israel is David Newman, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. Newman says that the majority of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement was once limited to mere proclamations by various organizations, but that this has been changing in recent years. Now, he says, boycott efforts are carried out primarily by determined activists who bombard public figures planning to come to Israel with an onslaught of emails and faxes. This is probably what happened to Hawking. If so, it means Israel may not be a pariah yet, but it is certainly no longer a place everyone travels to gladly.

According to Newman, one of the founders of Ben-Gurion University's politics and government department, which has been accused by local McCarthyists of having dangerous leftist tendencies, the answer to these attempts to impose an academic boycott on Israel is to strengthen the cooperation between Israeli and international scientists.

Acts such as upgrading the status of the Ariel University Center, and threats like the one by the Higher Education Council to shut down Ben-Gurion's politics and government department hardly contribute to furthering said cooperation.❞

On the other hand, I know a bunch of viciously uncreative minds who consume news like drugs. If you want to come up with old solutions, read news. If you are looking for new solutions, don't.

Society needs journalism – but in a different way. Investigative journalism is always relevant. We need reporting that polices our institutions and uncovers truth. But important findings don't have to arrive in the form of news. Long journal articles and in-depth books are good, too.❞

❝The experiment involves the participant sitting at a table with their right arm hidden from their view behind a screen. To evoke the illusion, the scientist touches the right hand of the participant with a small paintbrush while imitating the exact movements with another paintbrush in mid-air within full view of the participant.
"We discovered that most participants, within less than a minute, transfer the sensation of touch to the region of empty space where they see the paintbrush move, and experience an invisible hand in that position", says Arvid Guterstam, lead author of the study.❞

❝An initiative to name a Jerusalem street after Professor Yeshayahu Leibowitz has turned into an affair, a saga and then a tragedy, and on Thursday turned into what resembled a comedy.

Moments before the ratification of an initiative aiming to pay tribute to Leibowitz – a philosopher, scientist, observant Jew and resident of Jerusalem who did not hide his adamant opinions against the settlements – Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat announced that he is temporarily pulling the proposal, alongside some 20 other potential street names.❞

http://blog.commarts.wisc.edu/2012/11/29/its-science-time-princess-scientists-and-princess-bubblegum/

❝2012 has seen the rise of the ‘princess scientist’, thanks in part to a Huffington Post article on Dr. Erika Ebbel Angle, who hosts a children’s science show called The Dr. Erika Show. Dr. Erika appears on the show wearing the classic science-style lab coat as well as the tiara she won as Miss Massachusetts, leading young girls who watched the show to tell producers that they, too, want to be ‘princess scientists.’

Following this trend closely comes The Miss Rikei Contest in Japan, which pitted six science students and researchers against each other in a contest of intelligence and- yes- beauty. The contest purports to change the image of sciences to include women- but apparently only if those women are attractive.

Not long after, the European Commission launched a cringe-worthy campaign aimed at recruiting girls to the STEM disciplines. The Science: It’s a girl thing! video featured girls in high heels being ogled by a man in lab coats, and prominently featured lipstick, lip gloss, fingernail polish in contexts completely unrelated to science. The video was the subject of so much derision it was quickly taken off the official website.

These examples are generally well-intentioned, aimed at encouraging an interest in STEM disciplines in girls and women. However, the result is just tacked-on femininity and a familiar focus on the physical beauty of female scientists instead of their contributions to the scientific community. If nothing else the controversy surrounding them has drawn attention to the women- and frequent lack thereof- in these disciplines. However, they’ve left open the question of how to create a space in science where being feminine is acceptable. Is there anything in the ‘princess scientist’ idea that’s worth embracing?

The answer: Princess Bubblegum.

“It'll be fine. We've got Science!” Says Princess Bubblegum showing off her invention in the episode "Lady & Peebles."
The popular Adventure Time character predates The Dr. Erika Show by about a year, and embodies both aspects of the ‘princess scientist’ idea, in that Princess Bubblegum, is literally a princess and a scientist. Adventure Time goes a long way to establishing her credentials in both roles.❞

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2012/nov/29/cia-lawsuit-scientist-1950s-death

❝The family of a US government scientist who fell to his death from a New York hotel window six decades ago have launched a lawsuit for damages against the CIA, alleging the agency was involved in his murder and a subsequent cover-up.

In one of the most notorious cases in the organisation's history, bioweapons expert Frank Olson died in 1953, nine days after he was given LSD by agency officials without his knowledge.

In the lawsuit, filed in the US district court in Washington on Wednesday, Olson's sons Eric and Nils claim their father was murdered after he witnessed extreme interrogations in which the CIA killed suspects using the biological agents he had developed.

The CIA has long denied any foul play, though it was forced to admit in 1975, more than 20 years after the death, that the scientist had been given LSD in a spiked glass of Cointreau. The agency, which originally told the family the death was a result of job-induced stress, has since maintained that it was a drug-induced suicide.❞

#Haiti #cholera epidemic 'most likely' started at #UN camp - top scientist | BBC News
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-latin-america-20024400

❝The new evidence could have serious implications for the UN, which is facing an unprecedented legal and moral challenge in Haiti - as well as a multi-billion dollar compensation claim from victims' families.

More than 7,500 people have died from the cholera epidemic in Haiti since it started in late 2010. Hundreds of new cases are still being registered every week.

(...)

After studying molecular data known as full genome sequencing on the strain of cholera found in Haiti - and that prevalent in Nepal in 2010 - Dr Lantagne said: "We now know that the strain of cholera in Haiti is an exact match for the strain of cholera in Nepal."

(...)

The 2011 UN report - co-signed by her - acknowledged that inadequate toilets in the Nepalese UN camp in the mountain town of Mirabalais could have leaked the cholera bacterium into the nearby Meye River which flows into the country's main waterways.

But the report stressed that the outbreak "was not the fault" of any "group or individual".

(...)

Now, Dr Lantagne says the new genome data (in addition to other evidence) has changed her view since she had co-authored the UN report which effectively said no-one was to blame.

❝Much has been written about Richard P. Feynman (1918–1988), but it's fair to say that little has been drawn about him. A new graphic novel renders his life and work in comic-book form. The book, written by Jim Ottaviani with art by Leland Myrick and coloring by Hilary Sycamore, recounts Feynman's career, discoveries, relationships and eccentricities in a generous 262 pages.❞

http://www.ft.com/intl/cms/s/0/21669812-fbe4-11e1-af33-00144feabdc0.html

❝India’s ambitious plans for a huge expansion of its nuclear power capacity to help ease the country’s crippling power shortages have provoked a bitter backlash.
On Tuesday one of the country’s top nuclear scientists called for a temporary moratorium on commissioning any new nuclear power plants in the country until New Delhi can win the support of the local communities that will live in the shadow of the reactors.
(...)
On Monday, a protester was killed when police opened fire on angry villagers who had surrounded a police station. Earlier on Monday, thousands of villagers marched to lay siege to the plant and managed to get within half a kilometre before police dispersed them with tear gas.
The violent clashes at Kudankulam, which is being built by the state-owned Nuclear Power Corporation of India in conjunction with Russia’s Rosatom, echo last year’s violent protests in Jaitapur, where France’s Areva is hoping to build a 3,300MW nuclear power station.❞

❝A Scottish fisherman has found the world's oldest message in a bottle, the Guinness Book of World Records confirmed last week. It is 98 years old, and was cast into the ocean by Captain C.H. Hunter, a scientist at the Glasgow School of Navigation, who was studying the currents in the North Sea.

The bottle was one of 1,890 bottles released on June 10, 1914, and the 315th to be entered into Captain Brown's log, which is still kept and updated by Marine Scotland Science in Aberdeen.❞

❝"Drift bottles gave oceanographers at the start of the last century important information that allowed them to create pictures of the patterns of water circulation in the seas around Scotland," explained Bill Turrell, Head of Marine Ecosystems with Marine Scotland Science explained in the official press release on the event. "These images were used to underpin further research -- such as determining the drift of herring larvae from spawning grounds, which helped scientists understand the life cycle of this key species."❞

Hunter, a scientist at the Glasgow School of Navigation, who was studying the currents in the North Sea.

The bottle was one of 1,890 bottles released on June 10, 1914, and the 315th to be entered into Captain Brown's log, which is still kept and updated by Marine Scotland Science in Aberdeen.

“Drift bottles gave oceanographers at the start of the last century important information that allowed them to create pictures of the patterns of water circulation in the seas around Scotland,” explained Bill Turrell, Head of Marine Ecosystems with Marine Scotland Science explained in the official press release on the event. “These images were used to underpin further research — such as determining the drift of herring larvae from spawning grounds, which helped scientists understand the life cycle of this key species.”

Superbe !

http://cdn.theatlantic.com/static/mt/assets/science/assets_c/2012/09/scottishoceancurrants-thumb-615x929-97917.jpg

#bouteille_à_la_mer #océanographie #cartographie #science #recherche

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2012/jun/09/sex-depravity-penguins-scott-antarctic

❝It was the sight of a young male Adélie penguin attempting to have sex with a dead female that particularly unnerved George Murray Levick, a scientist with the 1910-13 Scott Antarctic Expedition. No such observation had ever been recorded before, as far as he knew, and Levick, a typical Edwardian Englishman, was horrified. Blizzards and freezing cold were one thing. Penguin perversion was another.

Worse was to come, however. Levick spent the Antarctic summer of 1911-12 observing the colony of Adélies at Cape Adare, making him the only scientist to this day to have studied an entire breeding cycle there. During that time, he witnessed males having sex with other males and also with dead females, including several that had died the previous year. He also saw them sexually coerce females and chicks and occasionally kill them.❞

Pourquoi l'open access ne se développe pas assez et comment à la fin cela pourrait se produire...

❝It’s certainly not due to cost. To publish in the reputable open-access journal PLoS ONE costs a publication fee of $1,350. Other open-access journals average a bit less, around $906. To publish in an Elsevier journal, on the other hand, appears to cost some $10,500. In 2011, 78 percent of Elsevier’s total revenue, or £1,605 million, was contributed by journal subscriptions. In the same year, Elsevier published 240,000 articles, making the average cost per article some £6,689, or about $10,500 US. So to publish behind a paywall with Elsevier—and make your work available to only some other researchers and no members of the public—costs nearly eight times more than publishing openly with PLoS. It’s apparent that we are not getting value for money from the traditional academic publishers.❞

To publish in the reputable open-access journal PLoS ONE costs a publication fee of $1,350. Other open-access journals average a bit less, around $906. To publish in an Elsevier journal, on the other hand, appears to cost some $10,500. In 2011, 78 percent of Elsevier's total revenue, or £1,605 million, was contributed by journal subscriptions. In the same year, Elsevier published 240,000 articles, making the average cost per article some £6,689, or about $10,500 US. So to publish behind a paywall with Elsevier—and make your work available to only some other researchers and no members of the public—costs nearly eight times more than publishing openly with PLoS. It's apparent that we are not getting value for money from the traditional academic publishers.

#open-access
#edition

finalement Fouchier peut publier son article sur les mutations de la grippe aviaire ; il suffisait de changer un peu les arguments (de trrrrrès dangereux on passe à dangereux, et d'utile à trrrrrrès utile).

❝Now that board has changed its mind. In late March, after reviewing a revised version of the paper and grilling the Dutch scientist, it voted 12 to 6 to recommend publication with none of the details excised.

Board members told us that the new virus appeared less lethal than they first thought; the benefits of letting scientists around the world keep an eye out for the specific mutations in nature appeared greater than they first thought; and the risk that a terrorist would use the information seemed minimal, judging from a briefing they got from intelligence officials. Many members also felt boxed in when federal officials said that redacting the details would harm America’s relations with nations that wanted full access.❞

❝all breast implants come with risks: within 10 years, up to 30 percent of patients have their implants removed or replaced, according to the US Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) 2011 silicone breast implant report. Part of the reason is just standard wear and tear, said Malcolm Roth, American Society of Plastic Surgeons president and chief of plastic surgery at Albany Medical Center. “Patients shouldn’t think of these as lifelong devices.”❞

❝Despite declaring last week a 60-day moratorium on the studies to allay security fears, Yoshihiro Kawaoka argued in a commentary in the journal Nature it was urgent and vital that his work continue. (...)
Last week, the two teams - Kawaoka's and a second team led by Ron Fouchier at Erasmus Medical College in the Netherlands - said they would temporarily suspend their research because of the concerns.
But writing in Nature on Wednesday, Kawaoka argued it would be "irresponsible" and dangerous not to continue researching highly pathogenic bird flu viruses.❞

on sait pas d'où ça vient mais ça fait le troisième scientifique iranien qui se fait buter…

❝Pharmacologist Tu Youyou, 81, will be presented the Lasker Award (...)
In 1969, Tu was appointed head of a government project that aimed to eradicate malaria.
She detected 380 extracts from 2,000 recipes, and obtained a pure substance called “Qinghaosu”, which became known as artemisinin in 1972.
An artemisinin-based drug combination is now the standard for malaria treatment.❞

Ex-CIA officer faces up to 120 years for leaking secrets | intelNews.org
http://intelligencenews.wordpress.com/2011/01/10/01-633/

❝A former CIA officer, who sued the Agency after he was fired, was arrested last Thursday in St. Louis, Missouri n charges of leaking classified information about a botched CIA covert operation in Iran.❞

En dehors du fait que le type risque 120 années de prison, l'affaire qu'il a révélée est assez marrante.

❝In chapter 9 of the book, he details a botched operation by the Iran Task Force to pass to the Iranians a series of faulty nuclear bomb design documents. To do this, the CIA apparently recruited a Russian former nuclear scientist, who had defected to the United States. The unnamed scientist was told to travel to Vienna, Austria, in early 2000, and offer to sell the documents to the Iranians. But the documents contained a deliberate technical flaw, which, Risen alleges, the Russian CIA operative thought was so obvious that it could endanger the entire mission, by making him look untrustworthy in the eyes of the Iranians. The Russian scientist ended up letting the Iranians know about the flaw, reveals Risen. He further alleges that the CIA operation may have actually helped the Iranian nuclear weapons program, as Iranian scientists would have been able to “extract valuable information from the blueprints while ignoring the flaws”. ❞
