En Australie, un Aborigène déjoue les projets de mines d’uranium d’Areva

Face aux 14 000 tonnes d’uranium logées dans les terres septentrionales d’Australie, Areva nourrissait de grandes ambitions. Le gisement était estimé à 2 milliards de dollars, selon média australien ABC News. Mais le géant du nucléaire français peut mettre au placard ses permis d’exploitation et ses velléités minières : des Aborigènes ont gagné le combat qu’ils menaient depuis des décennies contre les mines qui devaient être creusées sur leur territoire de Koongarra, rapportent un article d’un blog de Mediapart ainsi qu’un communiqué de l’Observatoire du nucléaire.

An indigenous community in the Ecuadorian Amazon has won a reprieve after building up an arsenal of spears, blowpipes, machetes and guns to fend off an expected intrusion by the army and a state-run oil company.

The residents of Sani Isla expressed relief that a confrontation with Petroamazonas did not take place on Tuesday as anticipated, but said the firm is still trying to secure exploration rights in their area of pristine rainforest.

“We have won a victory in our community. We’re united,” said the community president, Leonardo Tapuy. “But the government and the oil company won’t leave us alone.”

The Kichwa tribe on Sani Isla, had said they were ready to fight to the death to protect their territory, which covers 70,000 hectares. More than a quarter of their land is in Yasuni national park, the most biodiverse place on earth.

The Idle No More movement in Canada, a nationwide call to action by aboriginals, has gained significant momentum in recent weeks.

“Canada has consistently failed to live up to its obligations .... There is not a lot of good faith all the way around in this relationship.”

– Pamela Palmater, a spokesperson for the Idle No More movement

It all began as opposition to a far-reaching set of laws introduced by Stephen Harper, Canada’s prime minister.

The movement says that among other provisions, Omnibus Bill C-45 threatens aboriginal treaty agreements and sovereignty.

On December 11, Chief Theresa Spence began a hunger strike in protest against the bill. More protests spread across the country and even internationally.

Le 30 décembre 2011, un groupe d’aborigènes est venu manifester devant le Palais présidentiel, à Taipei, contre la présence du centre de stockage de déchets nucléaires sur l’île des Orchidées. Le président n’a pas réagi à leur action.

Le 20 février 2012, une autre manifestation a rassemblé quelque 500 #aborigènes devant le centre de stockage sur l’île elle-même. Ils exprimaient leur inquiétude après que des isotopes radioactifs ont été détectés dans ses environs et leur colère à l’égard de la société propriétaire du site Taiwan Power qui n’a pas tenu son engagement de trouver un autre endroit pour stocker ses #déchets_nucléaires.

Amnesty’s Damning Report on the Treatment of Australian Indigenous Communities

August 9th marks the seventeenth commemoration of the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, which aims to encourage the preservation and revitalization of Indigenous cultures. On August 8th Amnesty International released a report condemning, in particular, the Australian Governments’ policies on Indigenous Peoples. The report accused the Government of abandoning Aboriginal people and forcing them away from their traditional homelands. Claire Mallinson - National Director of Amnesty in Australia - commented that the Government used “paperclips and policy” rather than “bulldozers and violence”, but that the threat was no less pernicious. Amnesty calls for greater inclusion and participation by Indigenous Australians, a sentiment echoed by the UN day promoting worldwide Indigenous recognition.
