Egypt : death of a Facebook activist

    http://tahrirsquared.com/node/3679

Certain that hospital officials were covering up police abuse, opposition activists began to draw parallels between Gendy and Khaled Said, the Alexandria man whom police beat to death in 2010, sparking the revolution. Soon, Gendy’s bespectacled likeness appeared in graffiti portraits on walls around Cairo.

Pay #Facebook to get #activists to like you, to really really like you | Mobilizing Ideas
    http://mobilizingideas.wordpress.com/2012/07/30/pay-facebook-to-get-activists-to-like-you-to-really-reall

Because Facebook is constantly changing these visibility rules and settings, it makes groups that are overly reliant on these private platforms more subject to their changing rules. (...) For social media companies to make more money, they are taking more control of their systems.

Ultimately, you can’t decide what to see, Facebook does, and now that many groups have migrated to Facebook for what listservs and Web sites have historically done, they now have to pay for that engagement. It’s classic bait and switch.

Mark Kennedy hired as consultant by US security firm | Environment | guardian.co.uk
    http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2012/jun/21/mark-kennedy-consultant-security-firm?CMP=twt_gu

A former police spy who infiltrated the environmental movement for seven years has been hired by a private security firm in the US to give advice on how to deal with political activists.

Mark Kennedy has become a consultant to the Densus Group, providing “investigative services, risk and threat assessments”, according to an entry on his LinkedIn profile.

He says he has given lectures to firms and government bodies drawing on his experiences “as a covert operative working within extreme left political and animal rights groups throughout the UK, Europe and the US”.

Kennedy, 42, went to live in Cleveland, Ohio, after he was unmasked by activists in late 2010. He has claimed to have developed sympathies for the activists while undercover, although many campaigners have scorned this claim.

#Commotion Wireless : interview of Josh King | Intelligence Stratégique
    http://www.intelligence-strategique.eu/2011/commotion-wireless-interview-of-josh-king

We’re developing Commotion primarily because we see a great need, in efforts like the Arab Spring protests, for #activists to have the ability to communicate securely and anonymously in a local fashion, as well as share sparse sources of Internet connectivity. It deals only obliquely with the question of identity and #anonymity on the #Internet.

The Darknet Project: netroots activists dream of global mesh network
    http://arstechnica.com/open-source/news/2011/11/the-darknet-plan-netroots-activists-dream-of-global-mesh-network.ars

A group of Internet activists gathered last week in an Internet Relay Chat (IRC) channel to begin planning an ambitious project—they hope to overcome electronic surveillance and censorship by creating a whole new Internet. The group, which coordinates its efforts through the Reddit social networking site, calls its endeavor The Darknet Project (TDP).
