squattercity: Istanbul at war with itself
    http://squattercity.blogspot.fr/2013/06/istanbul-at-war-with-itself.html

“Across the city, the urban poor are being paid to leave their homes so that contractors — many with ties to government officials — can build gated communities.”

This factoid was buried in a New York Times article about the Taksim Square protests in Istanbul.

A Colorful Bolivian Bastion, Floating Above It All - NYTimes.com
    http://www.nytimes.com/2013/05/14/world/americas/a-colorful-bolivian-bastion-floating-above-it-all.html?pagewanted=2

“Lots of people describe El Alto as a revolutionary city, but it’s the capital of capitalism,” said Mario Durán, an activist who works to improve Internet access.

Home to about 220,000 residents in 1985, the city swelled as poor farmers and out-of-work miners poured in from the countryside. It is now bigger than La Paz, with an estimated size of well over one million. The population is overwhelmingly Aymara, one of the country’s main indigenous groups, and the immigrants have brought with them a fierce work ethic and a laissez-faire zest for business.

The most prominent feature of El Alto is its vast open-air market, which fills mile upon mile of city streets every Sunday and Thursday.

Illegal immigrants, Roma and those down on their luck live in dire conditions outside Madrid.

The illegal settlement of La Canada Real, outside the Spanish capital, has become known as “the slum of shame”.

Thousands of people live there without running water or drains. Electricity is hijacked, and simple houses are built amid rubble

Al Jazeera’s Rory Challands reports from the shantytown.

Kimmelman explains how the residents of Ard El Lewa, fed up with government inaction, built their own highway interchange and then invite the police to open an outpost there.

A few pages on, another article revels in the new self-built neighborhoods of New Delhi.

    http://www.slate.fr/lien/70641/google-favela-cartes

A $5 Light For The Developing World With An Ingenious Fuel: Gravity | Co.Exist
    http://www.fastcoexist.com/1681067/a-5-light-for-the-developing-world-with-an-ingenious-fuel-gravity

Many of the solutions out there are ingeniously solar powered. But GravityLight, an idea from two British designers, is something completely different. It gets its energy from gravity: A 22-pound bag of sand that gradually cranks a gear-train attached to a D.C. motor. One lift is enough for 30 minutes of light, and recharging is as simple as pushing the weight up again.

Water shortages driving growing thefts, conflicts in #Kenya - AlertNet
    http://www.trust.org/alertnet/news/water-shortages-driving-growing-thefts-conflicts-in-kenya

NAIROBI (AlertNet) – As droughts become more frequent and water shortages worsen, Kenya is seeing an increase in water thefts and other water-related crime, police records show.

The most common crimes are theft, muggings and illegal disconnections of water pipes by thieves who collect and sell the water. Many of the crimes occur in urban slums, which lack sufficient piped water.

“Since 2003, we have made piped water available to at least half of the slum residents in the entire country, but we are faced with severe hurdles as populations continue to grow and demand for the commodity continues to increase,” said Peter Mangich, acting director of water services in the Ministry of Water

    http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/world/la-fg-haiti-housing-20120715,0,979717.story

The number of displaced Haitians has dropped from 1.5 million to just under 400,000, according to the International Organization of Migration, changing the look of a capital whose landscape was defined for many months by piles of rubble and fraying tent encampments.

But the progress is largely cosmetic. Although a few camps have benefited from aid programs, a grave underlying housing shortage means that the majority of those who left the camps have disappeared into the overcrowded homes of relatives or constructed precarious shacks in hillside slums.

Cape Town has been awarded the right to host the World Design Capital 2014 (WDC2014) against stiff competition from cities across the planet, in large part because of the Cape Town Partnership’s bold and candid bid. The bid promised to use the year-long event to “deal with the vast imbalances that exist in our society”, by focusing on “community cohesion” and “infrastructure development”.

Mapping Toilets in a Mumbai Slum Yields Unexpected Results - NYTimes
    http://india.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/07/22/mapping-toilets-in-a-mumbai-slum-yields-unexpected-results

Mr. Potter and his colleagues decided to create a map of Cheeta Camp’s toilets (the interactive map can be found here). That meant two weeks tromping around the slum, figuring out where the toilets were located, who had put them up, how they functioned, and if they were even operational.

The students saw toilets as a way to delve into the inner workings of the community, to see what worked and what did not.  Of course, toilets are more than just a proxy. They are about as fundamental as you can get.

GroundUp: Taking stories from the streets to the sheets
    http://dailymaverick.co.za/article/2012-07-03-groundup-taking-stories-from-the-streets-to-the-sheets

The programme began in February, when 24 candidates took part in an intensive two-week training course. Of that group, the five most promising individuals were selected to make up the GroundUp team. They receive ongoing on-the-job training and support from UCT students from the Centre for Social Science Research, who also help out as subeditors. In April, GroundUp began to publish stories on their website.

“Our primary focus is news relating to social justice in the townships,” says Geffen. He points out that, though South Africa’s tabloids and community newspapers carry a great deal of township-based stories, they often lack focus on issues like health, gender and government performance.

    http://www.courrierinternational.com/article/2012/06/07/a-bombay-des-quartiers-rases-dans-l-interet-des-promoteurs
