Ms. Brenner championed causes for most of her adult life, protesting the Vietnam War as a college student and working on women's rights, civil rights and employment discrimination as a lawyer. She became Breast Cancer Action's first executive director in 1995, two years after undergoing treatment for the disease and a year before it recurred.
Ms. Brenner led the group until 2010, when illness forced her to retire. During the 15 years of her leadership, the group increased its membership to 50,000 from 3,500 and intensified its focus on demanding research into the causes of breast cancer, particularly links to #environmental pollutants like chemicals in food and the water supply, an area of research rife with unreliable data.
Ms. Brenner was among the first to question what she called the “#pinkwashing” of America: the proliferation of pink ribbons and products carrying labels stating that part of the purchase price would go to breast cancer research.

Pour la première fois en France, les concentrations biologiques de plusieurs substances chimiques de l'environnement ont été mesurées sur un échantillon représentatif de la population. L'Institut de veille sanitaire (InVS) étudie l'exposition de la population française à diverses substances chimiques présentes dans l'environnement en mesurant directement la concentration de ces substances ou de leur(s) métabolite(s) dans les tissus et liquides biologiques des individus (sang, urine, cheveux, etc.). Grâce à de tels dosages, le volet environnemental de l'étude nationale nutrition santé (ENNS) fournit une première estimation de l'exposition de la population française à une série de substances chimiques : métaux, pesticides, polychlorobiphényles (PCB).

Pesticides pyréthrinoïdes
· Les pesticides pyréthrinoïdes sont aujourd'hui la famille d'insecticides la plus utilisée, tant pour le traitement des cultures
que pour les applications domestiques.
· Dans l'ENNS, les concentrations urinaires de tous les métabolites mesurés des pyréthrinoïdes étaient plus élevées que
celles observées en Allemagne, au Canada ou aux États-Unis.
· La consommation de certains aliments et l'utilisation domestique de pesticides (pour les traitements antipuces ou le
traitement d'un potager) influençaient de façon notable ces concentrations.

....the story is familiar to anyone who saw the hit film Erin Brockovich. The corporate polluter was taken to court. The victims got millions of dollars. Problem solved.
But in reality, the “chromate problem” has not gone away. Today, tens of millions of Americans drink chromium-tainted tap water. Yet the controversy over whether people like Speth are dying of cancer from it is still being hotly debated.
Some of the most powerful voices in the debate are companies with a stake in the outcome. They've hired scientists to convince regulators that the chemical compound is safe. The lawsuit that Brockovich championed was merely the beginning of an intriguing tale about corporate manipulation of science.
In 2008, the National Toxicology Program, part of the National Institutes of Health, published groundbreaking research detailing how mice and rats that drank heavy doses of a toxic form of chromium called chromium (VI) developed cancerous tumors. The findings prompted the Environmental Protection Agency to act.
EPA scientists evaluated hundreds of studies and concluded that chromium (VI) likely causes cancer in people who drink it. The agency in 2011 was on the verge of making its scientists' findings official — a first step toward forming more stringent clean-water rules. But last year it bowed to pressure and announced it was going to wait for new studies being paid for by the chemical industry.
To lead those studies, the American Chemistry Council, the industry's main trade group and lobbyist, hired ToxStrategies Inc., a Texas-based firm with scientists experienced in poking holes in research that links chromium to cancer. The company describes its business this way on its website: “We often interact and collaborate with regulatory, academic and industrial professionals to ensure that the most appropriate science is incorporated into each assessment.”

Supprimée sous le Maréchal #Pétain, la profession d'#herboriste n'a jamais pu être rétablie malgré de nombreuses tentatives législatives.

Si nous revenons régulièrement sur cette question du diplôme d'herboriste, c'est parce que l'on constate que les pharmaciens ne s'intéressent pas à cette dimension de leur profession. Aujourd'hui, l'herboristerie représente environ 3 % des ventes des pharmacies et les conseils prodigués dans ce domaine sont pratiquement inexistants. De plus, sur le plan économique, la vente de plantes n'offre pas de marges aussi importantes que celle de médicaments chimiques.
Cela étant, recréer un diplôme d'herboriste permettrait d'ouvrir une voie à de nouvelles formes de médecine. Vous faites état, madame la secrétaire d'État, de la possibilité actuelle de vendre 148 plantes en dehors des officines de pharmacie, mais les producteurs et les distributeurs de ces plantes, faute d'un diplôme officiel, ne peuvent théoriquement prodiguer aucun conseil à la vente. Il leur est en effet interdit de donner des indications à visée thérapeutique.

The significant growth in many human diseases and disorders in recent decades, including breast and prostate cancer, male infertility and diabetes is connected to the rising levels of exposure to mixtures of some chemicals in widespread use, according to a review of recent literature commissioned by the European Environment Agency (EEA).
Chemicals which disrupt the hormone system – also known as ‘endocrine disrupting chemicals' (EDCs) – can be found in food, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, household products and cosmetics.

Vendredi 6 avril 2012, nous avons publié un texte intitulé « "Réindustrialisons" : quand "Là-bas si j'y suis" défend le cancer français ». Celui-ci pointait l'angle mort d'un reportage consacré à la cession du pôle vinylique d'Arkema à un « vautour » américain : l'absence de toute mention du caractère homicide de la production de ce pôle. Cette lacune étant évidemment liée aux positions politiques du producteur, du journaliste et des intervenants de cette émission, qu'on n'insultera pas en disant que, syndicalistes, militants du Front de gauche ou journalistes engagés, ils font actuellement la campagne présidentielle de Jean-Luc Mélenchon. On n'étonnera non plus personne – ni eux-mêmes - en rappelant que le Parti communiste, le Parti de gauche, la CGT et Là-bas si j'y suis soutiennent le parti de l'industrie et de l'emploi à tout prix. De toutes les réactions suscitées par notre texte, nous avons choisi de répondre à celle qui nous paraissait la plus poignante et la plus instructive, celle peut-être qui permet pour une fois d'aller au vif du sujet. Dow Chemical Co hoped an Olympic sponsorship would boost its global cache, but the company's link to a gas leak tragedy 28 years ago threatens to curb some of the benefits from the $100 million advertising deal.
As many as 25,000 residents of Bhopal, India, died in the aftermath of a 1984 gas leak at a pesticide factory that was owned by a subsidiary of Union Carbide, which sold the facility in 1994. Dow bought Union Carbide in 2001.
Since then, India, Amnesty International, Greenpeace and some members of the British Parliament have demanded Dow increase a $470-million compensation package that Union Carbide paid victims in 1989.
The Indian government wants Dow to pay an additional $1.7 billion, but Dow has refused, saying it has no responsibility for Bhopal and that Union Carbide settled liabilities.

A mysterious epidemic is devastating the Pacific coast of Central America, killing more than 24,000 people in El Salvador and Nicaragua since 2000 and striking thousands of others with chronic kidney disease at rates unseen virtually anywhere else. Scientists say they have received reports of the phenomenon as far north as southern Mexico and as far south as Panama.

Many of the victims were manual laborers or worked in sugar cane fields that cover much of the coastal lowlands. Patients, local doctors and activists say they believe the culprit lurks among the agricultural chemicals workers have used for years with virtually none of the protections required in more developed countries. But a growing body of evidence supports a more complicated and counterintuitive hypothesis.
The roots of the epidemic, scientists say, appear to lie in the grueling nature of the work performed by its victims, including construction workers, miners and others who labor hour after hour without enough water in blazing temperatures, pushing their bodies through repeated bouts of extreme dehydration and heat stress for years on end.
