  • Racial cities: the segregation of Romani people in urban Europe

    Going beyond race-blind approaches to spatial segregation in Europe, Racial Cities argues that race is the logic through which stigmatized and segregated “Gypsy urban areas” have emerged and persisted after World War II. Building on nearly a decade of ethnographic and historical research in Romania, Italy, France and the UK, Giovanni Picker casts a series of case studies into the historical framework of circulations and borrowings between colony and metropole since the late nineteenth century.

    By focusing on socio-economic transformations and social dynamics in contemporary Cluj-Napoca, Pescara, Montreuil, Florence and Salford, Picker detects four local segregating mechanisms, and comparatively investigates resemblances between each of them and segregation in French Rabat, Italian Addis Ababa, and British New Delhi. These multiple global associations across space and time serve as an empirical basis for establishing a solid bridge between race critical theories and urban studies.

    Racial Cities is the first comprehensive analysis of the segregation of Romani people in Europe, providing a fine-tuned and in-depth explanation of this phenomenon. While inequalities increase globally and poverty is ever more concentrated, this book is a key contribution to debates and actions addressing social marginality, inequalities, racist exclusions, and governance. Thanks to its dense yet thoroughly accessible narration, the book will appeal to scholars, undergraduate and postgraduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and equally to activists and policy makers, who are interested in areas including: Race and Racism, Urban Studies, Governance, Inequalities, Colonialism and Postcolonialism, and European Studies.

  • Manchester: Anti-Israel Rabbi Ahron Cohen has Car Torched after Condemning Gaza Attacks
    http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/anti-israel-rabbi-ahron-cohen-has-car-torched-after-condemning-gaza-attac

    Arsonists torched a car belonging to an anti-Zionist Rabbi in Manchester who has condemned violence against Palestine and branded Israel a “festering sore.”

    A Volvo estate vehicle was doused in fuel and set alight in Salford, Manchester, in what appears to be an escalation of a hate campaign against Rabbi Ahron Cohen.

    It happened in Welbeck Grove, Broughton, after Cohen’s house was pelted with eggs by a Jewish mob for his stance on Israel’s war with Palestine last month.

    A neighbour told the Manchester Evening News that tensions in the area’s Jewish community had been inflamed by the elderly man’s condemnation of attacks on the Gaza Strip. Cohen is a top member of orthodox Jewish group Neturei Karta, which is against the state of Israel.

    The woman, who wanted to stay anonymous, said: “His views have angered a lot of people around here. A lot of families have boys in the Israeli army.”

  • Police got the wrong man: Salford teen charged with Miss Selfridge arson during Manchester riots is cleared | Manchester Evening News - menmedia.co.uk
    http://menmedia.co.uk/manchestereveningnews/news/s/1456384_police-got-the-wrong-man-salford-teen-charged-with-miss-selfridg

    A teenager who spent nine days in prison after being charged with setting fire to Miss Selfridge during the Manchester riots has been dramatically cleared.

    Dane Williamson has spoken of his ‘hell’ after spending nine days behind bars for a crime he did not commit.

    Dane, 18, was arrested just hours after the Manchester riots and accused of setting fire to the Miss Selfridge store on Market Street. Despite denying being involved in the attack, which caused almost £500,000 worth of damage, he was later charged with criminal damage and recklessly endangering life and remanded in custody in Forest Bank prison.

    While behind bars, his flat in Salford was damaged by fire and he lost all of his possessions.

    But the case against him has been sensationally dropped.

    A 50-year-old man has now been arrested in connection with the incident but Greater Manchester Police are still hunting the suspect who started the Miss Selfridge blaze.

    Riot courts ’are presuming guilt, not innocence’, says solicitor

    In an exclusive interview Dane has revealed how he:

    has lost his home and all his possessions after being arrested;
    was labelled a firebug by prison officers and told he would be jailed for life;
    was locked up for 23 hours a day as a category A and then category B prisoner;
    suffered panic attacks because of the stress;
    has five alibis to prove it was not him.

    et en plus la police a gentiment balancé ses coordonnées sur twitter, leur zèle fait des dégats ....

    Les 4,2 millions de caméras de vidéosurveillance disséminées à travers tout le pays, dont 500.000 uniquement à Londres, n’ont pas empêché le déclenchement des émeutes qui ont secoué, du 6 au 11 août, les principales villes d’Angleterre - Londres, Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool, Bristol, Salford, Nottingham, Gloucester... - ni de contenir la violence des casseurs.
    Incapable de prévenir les délits, de traiter les images en temps réel, de réagir rapidement, la police en a été réduite à mettre en ligne sur Flickr une vingtaine de photographies de « suspects et présumés casseurs », demandant l’aide des internautes pour les identifier. (Numerama, 09 août). Les images tirées de caméras de surveillance étant de trop mauvaise qualité pour être utilisées par le coûteux programme de reconnaissance faciale dont elle dispose depuis peu, la police a dû partir à la recherche de photos de plus haute résolution prises par des médias, des équipes de surveillance, des badauds et demander leur collaboration (MSN Technologie, Canada - L’Express, 11 août). L’initiative policière n’a pas manqué de relais et de soutiens.
