Defacing a Twitter account is hardly a challenging cybercrime. Yet a rash of digital graffiti supporting the Islamic State is giving the militants a public relations victory in its fight with the West taking place on battlefields and online.

  • #Afghanistan : ‘A Shocking Indictment’

Gopal, a Wall Street Journal and Christian Science Monitor reporter, investigates, for example, a US counterterrorist operation in January 2002. US Central Command in Tampa, Florida, had identified two sites as likely “al-Qaeda compounds.” It sent in a Special Forces team by helicopter; the commander, Master Sergeant Anthony Pryor, was attacked by an unknown assailant, broke his neck as they fought and then killed him with his pistol; he used his weapon to shoot further adversaries, seized prisoners, and flew out again, like a Hollywood hero.

As Gopal explains, however, the American team did not attack al-Qaeda or even the Taliban. They attacked the offices of two district governors, both of whom were opponents of the Taliban. They shot the guards, handcuffed one district governor in his bed and executed him, scooped up twenty-six prisoners, sent in AC-130 gunships to blow up most of what remained, and left a calling card behind in the wreckage saying “Have a nice day. From Damage, Inc.” Weeks later, having tortured the prisoners, they released them with apologies. It turned out in this case, as in hundreds of others, that an Afghan “ally” had falsely informed the US that his rivals were Taliban in order to have them eliminated. (...) Gopal then finds the interview that the US Special Forces commander gave a year and a half later in which he celebrated the derring-do, and recorded that seven of his team were awarded bronze stars, and that he himself received a silver star for gallantry.

    (...)

Gopal’s investigations into development are no more encouraging. I—like thousands of Western politicians—have often repeated the mantra that there are four million more children, and 1.5 million more girls, in school than there were under the Taliban. Gopal, however, quotes an Afghan report that in 2012, “of the 4,000 teachers currently on the payroll in Ghor, perhaps 3,200 have no qualifications—some cannot read and write…80 percent of the 740 schools in the province are not operating at all.” And Ghor is one of the least “Taliban-threatened” provinces of Afghanistan.

    (...)

Why didn’t I—didn’t most of us—know these details? The answer is, in part, that such investigative journalism is very rare in Afghanistan. Gopal’s work owes a lot to other researchers. He is building on the work of Sarah Chayes and Alex Strick van Linschoten (both of whom immersed themselves in the Pushtu south), of exceptional journalists such as Carlotta Gall and David Rohde of The New York Times, of officials with years in the country such as Eckart Schiewek, Robert Kluijver, and Michael Semple, and of Afghan journalists such as Mohammed Hassan Hakimi.

    (...)

But his real genius lies in binding all these sources together and combining them with thousands of hours of interviews

    (...)

Sur les #Dostum et ses pareils,

No one reading Gopal would be tempted to joke about these men again, or present them simply as “traditional power-brokers” and “necessary evils.”

    http://www.courrierinternational.com/article/2014/01/04/la-theorie-de-l-evolution-rejetee-par-plus-de-la-moitie-des-r

Bulgaria blames Hezbollah for 2012 bombing, refueling terrorist listing debate
    http://www.csmonitor.com/World/Middle-East/2013/0205/Bulgaria-blames-Hezbollah-for-2012-bombing-refueling-terrorist-listing-de

The long-awaited results of the Bulgarian investigation into the bombing will place greater pressure on the European Union to proscribe Hezbollah as a terrorist organization, a classification repeatedly called for by the US and Israel but so far rejected by the EU.

    • Et comme le fait remarquer Angry Arab, l’article parvient à citer la police de New York (New York !) comme source d’expertise concernant le Hezbollah libanais :

In marked contrast to the bombing spectaculars attributed to Hezbollah in previous decades, the recent attacks generally have been poorly-planned, amateurish, and usually foiled before they could be carried out. The purported plots and attacks since 2008 spanned Thailand, Azerbaijan, Turkey, Kenya, and Cyprus. According to the New York police, there were nine thwarted international attacks alone planned by Hezbollah between January and July 2012.

  • Imminent Iran nuclear threat? A timeline of warnings since 1979. - CSMonitor.com

The Christian Science Monitor - CSMonitor.com
Imminent Iran nuclear threat? A timeline of warnings since 1979.

Breathless predictions that the Islamic Republic will soon be at the brink of nuclear capability, or – worse – acquire an actual nuclear bomb, are not new.

For more than quarter of a century Western officials have claimed repeatedly that Iran is close to joining the nuclear club. Such a result is always declared “unacceptable” and a possible reason for military action, with “all options on the table” to prevent upsetting the Mideast strategic balance dominated by the US and Israel.

And yet, those predictions have time and again come and gone. This chronicle of past predictions lends historical perspective to today’s rhetoric about Iran.

  • Why Christian Science Monitor stories have too many links, wrong ones | Poynter.
    http://www.poynter.org/latest-news/top-stories/159328/why-christian-science-monitor-stories-have-too-many-links-wrong-ones

A visible link in a news story is a caesura, a stoppage that forces a cognitive pause. The word “caesura” is a poetry term and, just as in poetic writing, literary pauses must be used with both caution and cause.

    http://tempsreel.nouvelobs.com/monde/20111114.OBS4493/nous-pronons-un-salafisme-nouveau.html

    http://www.csmonitor.com/World/2011/0929/Q-A-with-Syrian-jihadist-Minorities-have-nothing-to-fear-in-post-Assad-Sy

A Salafi preacher calls for arming the uprising | Syria Revolts
    http://syriarevolts.wordpress.com/2011/10/02/a-salafi-preacher-calls-for-arming-the-uprising

For the first time an identifiable, though not prominent, Salafi preacher (Loay az-Zoabi) has expressed the necessity of arming the uprising. Claiming the leadership of an unknown group calling itself ‘Believers participate’, Loay az-Zoabi states he has always advised activists, until now, not to take up arms for themselves but would advise defecting soldiers to use their arms to defends protesters.

ou plus explicitement dans le CSM :

CSM: But the international community has all but ruled out a Libya-style intervention.

ZOUABI: A lack of an international intervention will cause a lot of bloodshed. There will be massacres in Syria.

    http://tempsreel.nouvelobs.com/monde/20111114.OBS4425/syrie-dans-le-maquis-de-l-armee-libre.html

    Classiquement :

      http://seenthis.net/messages/36841

      http://wikileaks.org/cable/2006/08/06BEIRUT2735.html#

If the regime were to fall in Syria, who would
be there to fill in the vacuum? Perplexed that the Alawites,
who make up only 7-8 per cent of Syria, could rule so
exclusively as “a family business” over a vast Sunni
majority, Saad suggested that the Syrian Muslim Brotherhood,
in partnership with ex-regime figures like Abdel Halim
Khaddam and Hikmet Shehabi ("though he’s still close to the
regime"), could step into the void. Saad claimed that the
Syrian Brotherhood is similar in character to Turkey’s
moderate Islamists. “They would accept a Christian or a woman
as President. They accept civil government. It’s like
Turkey in Syria. They even support peace with Israel.”
Saying that he maintains close contact with Khaddam (in
Paris) and Syrian Muslim Brotherhood leader-in-exile Ali
Bayanuni (in London), Saad urged us to “talk to Bayanuni.
See what he’s like. You will see wonders.”
