Iran may double gas sale to Turkey

The Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) reported over the weekend that Tehran could soon double gas exports to Turkey after it finalizes a project to strengthen gas pressure facilities in the border city of Tabriz. “At present, the gas compressor installations in Tabriz have three turbo compressor systems and three electro compressors will be added to the installations in this development plan,” IRNA quoted National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC) for Operations Deputy Head Abdul Hossein Samari as saying.
Samari told the news agency that Iran could increase its daily gas transfer to Turkey from the current 36 million cubic meters to 53 million cubic meters.
The statements from Iran come at a time when Ankara has to meet an even greater demand for natural gas in electricity production. Water levels in Turkey’s major reservoirs have fallen remarkably this year, eating away at the country’s hydroelectric production capacity and thus increasing the need for natural gas in electricity production.
