South Korea protests against Japanese shrine visits

By Ben McGrath 3 May 2013

Visits by 168 Japanese lawmakers and three cabinet officials on April 20–21 to the controversial Yasukuni Shrine have exacerbated tensions, not only with China, but also South Korea. The shrine, dedicated to Japan’s war dead, including 14 “Class-A” war criminals, is seen as a glorification of Japan’s wartime imperialist expansion. Although Prime Minister Shinzo Abe did not personally attend the event, he made a symbolic offering as the head of the government.

South Koreans Users of Propaganda Website Risk Punishment | NK News – North Korea News

    http://www.nknews.org/2013/04/south-koreans-subscribed-to-north-korean-website-risk-punishment

SEOUL – Records released by hackers show that over 2000 South Koreans are subscribed to North Korean propaganda website Uriminzokkiri, and are now thought to be at risk of punishment under South Korea’s archaic National Security Act if found guilty of engaging in subversive “anti-South Korean” activities.

The hacker group Anonymous Korea made the details available in three parts (1, 2, 3), causing South Korean news agency Yonhap to speculate whether or not South Koreans found subscribing to the North Korean propaganda website were in infringement of the law.

South Korea’s threats heighten danger of military conflict
    By Peter Symonds
    2 April 2013

South Korean President Park Geun-hye yesterday gave her country’s military the green light to take any action that it saw fit in response to a threat from North Korea. Her comments escalate the danger of conflict on the Korean Peninsula amid ongoing joint war games between South Korea and the US, and warnings of war by North Korea.

The Korean Peninsula: Flirting with Conflict
    Seoul/Brussels | 13 Mar 2013

North Korea has taken a number of recent steps that raise the risks of miscalculation, inadvertent escalation and deadly conflict on the Korean peninsula. On 12 December, it launched a small satellite into orbit in defiance of UN Security Council Resolutions 1695, 1718 and 1874. The Council condemned this in Resolution 2087 (22 January). Three weeks later, Pyongyang conducted its third underground nuclear explosion. In response, the Council unanimously adopted Resolution 2094 (7 March) condemning the test and expanding economic sanctions. This was preceded by multiple vitriolic threats from the North. While none of this is unprecedented, the danger of unintended consequences has increased considerably. All sides need to issue more reassuring statements, exercise caution during planned military exercises and, especially, the North must avoid further blatant disregard of its international obligations.

South Korea to Get Longer-Range Missiles under New Deal with US

    By Associated Press in Seoul
    Guardian
    October 7, 2012

    http://www.globalpolicy.org/component/content/article/185-general/51979-south-korea-to-get-longer-ranger-missiles-under-new-deal-with-us

With the permission of the US, South Korea has extended the range of its ballistic missiles to reach all of North Korea. In response, North Korea has declared that its missiles can now strike mainland US. After missile tests in 2006 and 2009, North Korea’s already crippled economy has been sanctioned by the UN. With a recent power transition in the North and upcoming presidential elections in the South, tensions are again rising on the Korean Peninsula.
