Prime Minister David Cameron announced that social media could “be used for good or ill” and therefore would “look at whether it would be right to stop people communicating via these websites and services when we know they are plotting violence, disorder and criminality”.

Debate the death penalty!? Oh, come on!

Whilst on my holidays, I phoned home to check whether my goldfish had been fed and casually asked the goldfish loving member of my family whether there was any news – ‘nothing really,’ he said, ‘oh, but Guido Fawkes and the Daily Mail are trying to raise a petition to get the House of Commons to debate the death penalty.’ When I realised he wasn’t winding me up, I found my insides groaning in despair and disbelief.

There are two issues here – the first is the awful use of petitions to force Parliament into debating a particular topic, and the second is the issue of the death penalty itself.

Thankfully, in our country, murder is still rare, the restoration of the death penalty will not make it any rarer. If Guido Fawkes wishes to make a contribution to the debate on the Criminal Justice System and crime then there are far better and more constructive ways of doing this than this rather stupid act of self-publicity.

Boardroom salary has escalated, even in a difficult financial climate, by rewarding failure or by slashing costs in terms of workers and their salaries. The average CEO now earns £4.9m a year - almost 200 times the average wage. In contrast, the average worker has seen their salary frozen, or rise less than inflation. After decades of experimenting with the failed experiment of trickle down economics, it is time to spread the weath from the bottom up. We call for a debate to make society fairer and reduce the inequality gap. We call for a serious discussion on a living wage, removing the poorest from taxation, making the 50p tax rate permanent and closing tax loopholes that can only be exploited by the rich.

It is the much-hyped Government website bringing democracy directly to the people - but the project crashed as soon as it was launched today due to high traffic.

The new site for e-petitions allows members of the public to have their issue debated in Parliament if they get enough support online - with the death penalty among the most hotly-contested issues.

The two most popular petitions - winning up to 420 signatures by lunchtime today - both called for the return of capital punishment.
