The trajectory that Moglen is using has centralized social media as the starting point and distributed social media as the place we are moving toward. But in actual fact, distributed social media is where we started, and centralized platforms are where we have arrived.
The Internet is a distributed social media platform. The classic internet platforms that existed before the commercialization of the web provided all the features of modern social media monopolies.
Platforms like Usenet, Email, IRC and Finger allowed us to do everything we do now with Facebook and friends. We could post status updates, share pictures, send messages, etc. Yet, these platforms have been more or less abandoned. So the question we need to address is not so much how we can invent a distributed social platform, but how and why we started from a fully distributed social platform and replaced it with centralized social media monopolies.

In the meantime, we have many clever and dedicated people contributing to inventing alternative platforms, and these platforms can be very important and worthwhile for the minority that will ever use them, but we do not have the social will nor capacity to bring these platforms to the masses, and given the dominance of capital in our society, it's not clear where such capacity will come from.
As surveillance and control is enforced by the powerful interests of capital, privacy and autonomy become a question of power and privilege, not just consumer choice.

Le but est de permettre à l'utilisateur de surfer et faire l'ensemble de ses manipulations en étant protégée contre tout ce qui s'apparente à une intrusion dans la vie privée. Plutôt qu'un stockage en ligne chez des entreprises dont la politique exacte en la matière ne peut être réellement contrôlée, la FreedomBox s'appuie sur des communications décentralisées. La liste des attributions de cette Box couvre bon nombre de cas de figures :

– Un réseau social sûr pour l'utilisateur, en remplaçant Facebook, Flickr ou encore Twitter et tous les services centralisés par d'autres services fédérés et respectueux de la vie privée

– Les données sont automatiquement stockées sur la mémoire de la FreedomBox de manière chiffrée, mais également sur celles de vos amis et collègues

– Protection de la neutralité du réseau : si le fournisseur d'accès commence à limiter certains accès de votre connexion, la FreedomBox peut router le trafic pour contourner les barrières. Cela peut concerner les pays notamment où des protections recouvrent tout l'Internet, comme la Chine.

– Publication anonyme : vos amis qui se trouvent dans des zones de réseau censuré, comme la Chine justement, peuvent quand même recevoir les données que vous voulez leur transmettre.

le nouveau projet d'Eben Moglen se structure un peu :

Freedom Box is the name we give to a personal server running a free software operating system, with free applications designed to create and preserve personal privacy.
Because social networking and digital communications technologies are now critical to people fighting to make freedom in their societies or simply trying to preserve their privacy where the Web and other parts of the Net are intensively surveilled by profit-seekers and government agencies. Because smartphones, mobile tablets, and other common forms of consumer electronics are being built as “platforms” to control their users and monitor their activity.
Freedom Box exists to counter these unfree “platform” technologies that threaten political freedom. Freedom Box exists to provide people with privacy-respecting technology alternatives in normal times, and to offer ways to collaborate safely and securely with others in building social networks of protest, demonstration, and mobilization for political change in the not-so-normal times.
