Media mis-reporting HIV rate among SA schoolgirls. True rate is 12.7 percent | Africa Check
    http://africacheck.org/reports/media-mis-reporting-the-hiv-rate-among-schoolgirls-true-rate-is-12-7-pe

The claim that 28 percent of South African schoolgirls are living with HIV started with a remark by Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi, misreported by The Sowetan. Unquestioned, it has been repeated by media across the country and the world. The true rate is half that.

Cheap drugs a bitter pill for the West | Mail & Guardian
    http://mg.co.za/article/2013-03-08-00-cheap-drugs-a-bitter-pill-for-the-west

The Ugandan government faced an easy choice when it decided to start producing its own version of a key malaria treatment, rather than continuing to rely on expensive imports. Since the country began making its own medicine in 2007, Uganda has produced not only anti-malarials, but also antiretrovirals (ARVs) used to treat HIV. The public-private company, Quality Chemicals, plans to roll out more ARVs, anti-malarials and antibiotics in the coming months and years.

The venture, a shining example of African pharmaceutical manufacturing, was made possible in part because Uganda is considered a “least-developed country”. As such, it doesn’t yet have to respect international intellectual property laws (...)

But least-developed countries may be running out of time. They have until July to adopt the agreement’s measures into their own laws and a continued extension for pharmaceutical products until 2016.

Women’s Peace Camp from Greenham Common to Menwith Hill

    http://www.thefword.org.uk/features/2003/09/from_greenham_to_menwith_the_womens_peace_campaign_at_menwith_hill

In 1981 a small group of women and children marched from Cardiff to Greenham Common to protest against the siting of cruise missiles at the U.S military base in Newbury, Berkshire.

    http://www.antiwarsongs.org/canzone.php?id=6925

The last missiles left the camp in 1991 but the camp remained in place until 2000 after protestors won the right to house a memorial on the site.

Women have been permanently camped at the Menwith Hill Women’s Peace Camp for several years to draw attention to the facility.

Forced sterilisations stoke Kenyan anger - Features - Al Jazeera English
    http://www.aljazeera.com/indepth/features/2012/10/2012108132844521409.html

In a tiny classroom in the heart of Kenya’s largest informal settlement, Kibera, it is Rose Njuguna’s turn to speak about what the doctor stole from her.

Rose is a casual labourer, but the reason that brought her and 10 other women together is far graver than her daily struggle to put a meal on the table.

The women have two things in common: they are all HIV-positive and, because of this, they say they were sterilised in different hospitals - without their consent.

“Sometimes I look at other people’s children, and wonder how old my child would be today. I fantasise about being a mother, and the love I would give my baby,” Rose tells the group.

Greece on the breadline: #HIV and #malaria make a comeback | World news | The Guardian
    http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/blog/2012/mar/15/greece-breadline-hiv-malaria?

The incidence of HIV/Aids among intravenous drug users in central Athens soared by 1,250% in the first 10 months of 2011 compared with the same period the previous year, according to the head of Médecins sans Frontières Greece, while malaria is becoming endemic in the south for the first time since the rule of the colonels.

Reveka Papadopoulos said that following savage cuts to the national health service budget, including heavy job losses and a 40% reduction in funding for hospitals, Greek social services were “under very severe strain, if not in a state of breakdown. What we are seeing are very clear indicators of a system that cannot cope.”

Quackdown! - How Celia Farber tried to sue an AIDS activist - and lost

AIDS denialist Celia Farber sued Richard Jefferys for calling her a liar. In November, the Supreme Court of New York dismissed Farber’s action. Quackdown interviewed Richard about the case. The interview is fascinating because Richard crisply describes the web of lies, homophobia and madness in the world of AIDS denialism.

SA #PMTCT Evaluation shows that virtual elimination of paediatric #HIV is possible with intensified effort
    http://www.mrc.ac.za/pressreleases/2011/10press2011.htm

Study results from a national survey, conducted between June to December 2010, to evaluate the effectiveness of the South African Prevention of Mother To Child Transmission (SA PMTCT) programme at six weeks postpartum show that out of a sample size of 9915 infants, 31,4% were HIV-exposed. The national HIV transmission rate from mother-to-child, measured in these 9915 infants aged 4-8 weeks attending public sector clinics for their (six week DTaP/Pentaxim) immunisation was 3.5%.

AIDS-free generation now possible, says Hillary Clinton | Nature News Blog

the world can “usher in an AIDS-free generation” by focusing on the combination of three proven strategies: ending mother-to-child transmission, expanding voluntary medical male circumcision, and scaling up treatment for people living with HIV/AIDS.

    http://sciencespeaksblog.org/2011/03/09/karim-hiv-onslaught-‘decimating’-teenage-girls-in-south-africa

in #KwaZulu-Natal, what we are seeing is high, high incidence rates, driven by the age-sex difference with many women acquiring HIV almost around sexual debut, at 14 or 15 years. By the age of 20, one in three women is already infected with HIV. By the time they are 25, it’s one in two. You cannot sustain this kind of onslaught on our communities.

MSF: World #AIDS Day – Flying in the face of evidence
    http://blogs.plos.org/speakingofmedicine/2010/12/01/msf-world-aids-day-flying-in-the-face-of-evidence

“#Treatment costs have also dramatically dropped, with a decrease of over 99% since 2000.
Now, to the incredulity of everyone who has been dutifully monitoring and evaluating treatment in what must be one of the most accountable and successful global public health programmes ever to exist, donors are threatening to withdraw funding from #HIV/AIDS. The same donors who ten years earlier cited lack of clinical or economic evidence are now, in the face of a wealth of robust evidence supporting efficacy and cost-effectiveness, claiming that AIDS is getting too much money, and that it’s time to do something else instead. The US government is turning its attention to maternal and child health, and several European countries seem to be turning away from health altogether.”
