A total of over 3 million hectares (30,000 square kilometers) of arable land has been lost in Turkey in the last two decades due to rising housing needs and the fragmentation of agricultural land into economically nonproductive splits, according to Cevat Kır, the chairman of agricultural machinery producer LandForce.
