This study is very timely because although the students are creating a new grill for American backyards, the business plan is designed to allow the grills to be deployed in developing countries as an alternative source for cooking. Wilson originally came up for the idea during his time spent in Nigeria. While there he noticed a large set of problems linked to practice of cooking with firewood. These problems include reports of women being raped during their daily search for firewood, constant increase in deforestation, and respiratory health issues due to the daily inhalation of smoke in closed proximities. According to the United Nations Statistics Division, 55 percent of households in sub-Saharan Africa depend on firewood. In developing countries this Solar Grill would become a solution to a growing need.

Energy is everywhere in the environment surrounding us — available in the form of thermal energy, light (solar) energy, wind energy, and mechanical energy. However, the energy from these sources is often found in such minute quantities that it cannot supply adequate power for any viable purpose. In fact, until recently, it has not been possible to capture such energy sufficiently to perform any useful work.
This scenario is about to change.

Les scientifiques ont été en mesure d’intégrer des nanogénérateurs sur une petite puce, destinée à être intégrée à des appareils électroniques comme des iPod ou des téléphones. Elle serait en mesure d’utiliser l’énergie cinétique produite par les mouvements du corps humain, afin d’accumuler de l’énergie et de générer de l’électricité, rapporte The Telegraph.

Par conséquent, les scientifiques entrevoient déjà le jour où les appareils électroniques pourront se passer de batterie ou d’être branchés à une prise de courant. Or, cette possibilité ne se concrétisera que lorsque la nanotechnologie aura suffisamment évolué en ce sens, nuancent-ils.

C’est dommage, une petite manivelle pour faire fonctionner son iPhone aurait été plus rigolo :) Si effectivement une puce de la sorte est réalisée, un nombre d’appareils transportés régulièrement pourraient être alimentés simplement. Restera toujours le problème du stockage de cette énergie dont l’histoire ne parle pas. Et quid de tous les autres gadgets qui ne sont pas transportés ?
