EA has been inundated in recent weeks with what GamesIndustry International understands to be “several thousand” letters and emails protesting the inclusion of same sex or LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) content in its video games, most notably Mass Effect 3 and Star Wars: The Old Republic. When asked, EA confirmed that this has indeed been occurring, and unsurprisingly, EA has no plans to censor any of its games.

Nintendo has had massive success over the last few years by attracting new female gamers through casual “crossover” titles like Wii Play and Wii Fit, but to my mind it’s a costly mistake to think the lady gaming audience is only interested in nonnarrative family-oriented games. As a teenage PC gamer in the mid-’90s, I got my parents to part with hundreds of dollars for brilliant LucasArts (yes, that Lucas) titles like Grim Fandango, Sam and Max, and Day of the Tentacle. These were sharp, literate games with tons of narrative appeal, unconventional quests, and a few really great, hilarious, non-ditzy female characters. (While none of these games were huge commercial successes, I’m not the only one who thinks they’d have been better served by the graphics capabilities of modern consoles.)

If you have been disparaging video games – or, perhaps, trying to wean yourself from an addiction to them – it’s time to think again. Video games are now high culture, with the imprimatur of the Museum of Modern Art, which announced on Thursday that it has acquired the first 14 titles in a planned collection of about 40 games. These constitute a new category among the museum’s collections, and will be on display in the Philip Johnson Galleries starting in March. (An exhibition devoted to video games will open in December at the Museum of the Moving Image, and another exhibition, at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, closed in September.)

Vous avez 12 ans, vous êtes birman, colombien, congolais, afghan, haïtien... vous venez d’être enrôlé de force pour faire la guerre, vous êtes un enfant-soldat. Vous êtes en première ligne, vous n’avez pas d’autre choix que de combattre et peu d’entre vous survivront…Dans ce jeu, les joueurs sont invités à personnaliser un enfant-soldat et à l’envoyer combattre. Vous avez le choix des armes, du pays et des vêtements. Dérageant ? Certes, c’est l’effet attendu par Amnesty International qui nous rappelle que la guerre, certains la jouent quand d’autres la vivent (environ 250 000 enfants à travers le monde). In my view, the cube tells us something either incredibly deep or incredibly shallow about our fellow humans. Or, let’s get zen, both deep and shallow at the same time.

Humans are curious, competitive, creative, and destructive. Nothing we don’t already know. But most of all? Humans have a lot of free time these days.

Laissez-moi vous conter une histoire. Hier, alors qu’en route pour visiter sa Mère-Grand elle attendait innocemment son train, la douce et pure @NeukdeSogoul s’aventura dans la forêt obscure du kiosque à journaux. Au lieu de se diriger immédiatement vers le rayon Féminins comme une bonne petite fille, elle s’est égarée du coté des magazines de jeux vidéo, la vilaine. Et tel le délicat papillon attiré par l’ampoule chauffée à blanc, sa morbide curiosité se trouva aiguisée par cette couverture de si bon goût : Source : Genre !
