Le paradoxe du singe savant est un théorème selon lequel un singe qui tape indéfiniment et au hasard sur le clavier d'une machine à écrire pourra « presque sûrement » écrire un texte donné. La probabilité qu'un singe tape avec exactitude un ouvrage complet comme Hamlet de Shakespeare est si faible que la chance que cela se produise au cours d'une période de temps de l'ordre de l'âge de l'univers est minuscule, mais cependant pas nulle.
Nous sommes deux à vouloir travailler ici à Marseille, à vouloir travailler le papier, la poésie, le dessin, le sténopé, la reliure, la sérigraphie, la gravure. Faire des images pour rapprocher le dedans et le dehors. Faire des livres pour garder des traces et inventer des villes imaginaires dans la ville.
Nous avons envie de pratiquer d'abord, puis d'exposer, d'échanger avec cette ville aux multiples facettes. Vous avez sûrement d'autres singes à fouetter : plutôt vous montrer quelques images.

In his book “Debt: The First 5,000 Years,” the anthropologist David Graeber examines our history of debt and money, concluding, in part, that humans do not naturally tend toward impersonal, reciprocal exchange. Instead, exchange usually develops in cultures first as a part of a larger social and cultural ritual. One of the most compelling cultures Graeber profiles is the Tiv of West Africa, who have very particular rules about exchange. For starters, they believe that bringing an economic transaction to full completion is essentially immoral, or at least frowned upon, because it implies that one party doesn't want anything to do with the other in the future. If a Tiv man or woman gives you a gift, you are supposed to respond with another gift of slightly greater or lesser value. The outstanding debt between the two of you is a signal that your relationship is going to continue. To respond with a gift of equal value would be to say implicitly that you wish to even things out and draw your relationship to a close.
Kickstarter is run according to a similar form of gift logic. The artists create a short video, explaining themselves and conveying their personality. People contribute to them because they're friends who know the artist personally; they're fans engaged in a highly personal if unidirectional relationship with the artist; or simply because they're intrigued by the project and want some sense of participation in it. (Though it has been estimated that only 10 to 20 percent of contributors find projects this way, through the Kickstarter site rather than through the artists' own social-media promotions — and on average, these people donate less money.)

Now, the people can decide what gets funded.
I fear, however, that this particular phenomenon fits a little too squarely with the right-wing agenda in the US (and elsewhere, actually). Government support for the arts has always been miniscule, but it's now disappearing rapidly, with many states moving to cut their state arts commissions and one that already has. This year, we saw more attacks on the NEA, CPB and other public funding for media and the arts. Yes, crowdfunding helps bridge the increasing gap, but I'd be much more excited if I received calls to action to support public funding for the arts every five minutes, instead of another email announcing a Kickstarter campaign I can help fund.
Why should I need to help fund some filmmaker I love, when I pay taxes that I believe should support the arts, but don't. This smacks of the “big society” ideas going around in the UK to me. The government doesn't need to help the people anymore, the people can help the people. While contributing to a Kickstarter campaign doesn't make you a right-wing, arts-cutting person, by any means, the adoption of such trends can be detrimental to the argument for public funding of the arts.
