New research by Sri Lankan medical professionals has identified high amounts of the herbicide glyphosate as the culprit behind the high levels of chronic kidney disease in the country’s North Central province and other key rice-producing areas.

Previous studies by the New Delhi-based Center for Science and Environment and the World Health Organization (WHO) also found high incidences of kidney disease in Sri Lanka’s main rice-producing provinces.
The Indian researchers estimated that 17,000 square kilometers of land in Sri Lanka’s North Central, Northern and Eastern provinces were at risk. Some 2.2 million people live on that land.
According to the WHO findings, approximately 21.5 percent of the country’s population is suffering from kidney disease.
