In a speech rife with incongruities and contradictions, President Obama set out his vision and defense of U.S. foreign policy on Wednesday at the West Point Military Academy in New York.
In the speech, Obama announced that he believes “in American exceptionalism with every fiber of my being” and spoke repeatedly about “American leadership” and “American strength.”

Dick Cheney n’a pas été impressionné par le discours prononcé hier par Barack Obama à l’Académie militaire de West Point, où le président démocrate a défendu sa politique étrangère en mettant en garde contre la tentation d’interventions militaires « précipitées » dans le monde.
Je cite un extrait de la réaction de l’ex-vice-président qui est intervenu hier sur Fox News :
« Il est un président très, très faible. Peut-être le plus faible, certainement le plus faible que j’aie vu de mon vivant. » (…)
« Il est prêt à retirer toutes nos troupes d’Afghanistan sans négocier un accord garantissant le maintien d’une force résiduelle. C’est stupide, imprudent, et cela renforcera en fait l’idée que nous sommes faibles et que nous avons un président qui ne comprend pas ses obligations. »

American presidents tend to stay away from statistics that challenge the notion that the U.S. leads the world. They know that talking about the country’s shortcomings invites charges of lacking patriotism. Obama learned that at his cost three months into his presidency. At a news conference in Brussels he was asked whether he, like many of his predecessors, subscribed to the notion of American exceptionalism, of a country uniquely qualified to lead the world.
His reply: “I believe in American exceptionalism, just as I suspect that the Brits believe in British exceptionalism and the Greeks believe in Greek exceptionalism.” The remark prompted a storm of criticism and doubts over his leadership philosophy. Obama never repeated that line.
