Palestine. Intéressant sujet quasiment jamais évoqué publiquement: les dettes contractées par l’Autorité palestinienne (PA) dont l’existence a été révélée à l’occasion du départ du ministre des Finances Nabil Qassis. L’auteur de l’article, Abdel Bari Atwan (Rédacteur en chef de Alquds Alarabi) s’insurge contre une situation qui non seulement hypothèque l’avenir des Palestiniens mais leur fait supporter aussi le coût de l’occupation israélienne (En général, on s’accorde à dire que c’est la communauté internationale qui, par ses aides, finance l’occupation israélienne des territoires palestiniens).

“We are very shocked to learn that the Palestinian Authority (PA) in Ramallah has run up debts approaching $5bn and that $1bn is external debt. These debts are a heavy burden on the Palestinian people, and will extend to the coming generations. Most Palestinians thought that the PA’s funding came from the donor countries, not debts that would constrain the hands of the Palestinian people and break their will.

The Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and his Prime Minister Salam Fayyad have been airing apparently logical comparisons between the prosperous conditions of the Palestinians in the West Bank and the deteriorating conditions of the residents of the Gaza Strip. However, these Palestinian officials have not mentioned that such prosperity came as a result of borrowing the billions of dollars from foreign banks and institutions, not as a result of the fiscal genius of the government and its prime minister, who was a World Bank economist from 1987 – 1995 and was dispatched to the West Bank by the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

I am not biased towards Hamas in the Gaza Strip, as I reject the way it deals with its citizens with an iron fist, the spread of corruption, and the level of interference in their personal lives. However, I am biased towards the Palestinian people and their future. They will be under pressure of this debt for decades ahead.

(…) I thank God for the resignation of Dr Nabil Qasis, which freed him to open up this issue of debts, to expose the cover-up of the increasing financial quagmire. The Palestinian prime minister should resign from his position, as he has plunged his country, subject to Israeli occupation, into debt. Salam Fayyad and his President Mahmoud Abbas should bear the responsibility of this disaster. They should resign from their positions as they have exempted the Israeli occupation from bearing its responsibility for over 20 years since signing the Oslo Agreement. (…) The PA, that now supports the Israeli occupation by borrowing money that it knows it cannot pay back, must be dissolved.”

Our purpose in this article is to examine socio-economic and spatial integration of ethnic minorities in the Oslo region. We analyse relocation between 1998 and 2008 for members of ten minority groups along three overlapping dimensions: upwards in the neighbourhood hierarchy, outwards from the inner city to all suburbs, and westwards from a less affluent to a more affluent part of the region. The results provide some limited support for spatial assimilation theory. Two minority groups, Iranians and Vietnamese, comply partly with the theory. Another group, Filipinos, has stagnated in its socio-economic and spatial integration. The remaining groups do not relocate in accordance with the native pattern, or fail to integrate in socio-economic terms. The discrepancy between theory and results is most pronounced along the westward axis. We interpret the results in a broader context of regional and national circumstances: spatial assimilation theory may have different utility in different welfare regimes, depending on spatial inequality and the politics of place.

22. juli-ofre får nesten dobbelt så mye i erstatning - Norge - NRK Nyheter

On connait maintenant les montants pour l’indemnisation des victimes de Breivik. Après avoir bataillé contre l’Etat, les avocats des victimes ont obtenu le doublement des indemnisations (hors frais de prise en charge hospitalière et suivi psychologique).

La famille d’une personne tuée dans les attaques recevra 600 000 couronnes norvégiennes soit 82 000 euros. Les personnes qui ont été grièvement blessées recevront chacune 450 000 couronnes soit 62 000 euros, et enfin, Ceux qui sont revenus physiquement indemne d’Utøya recevront 300 000 couronnes soit 41 000 euros.

On estime qu’entre 2 000 et 3 000 personnes sont éligibles pour déposer une demande d’indemnisation, mais tous les dossiers ne seront pas nécessairement retenus. Le comité de soutien aux victimes craint que beaucoup de ceux qui n’ont pas été blessés physiquement mais qui ont été psychologiquement très atteints ne reçoivent aucune indemnité.

En som ble livstruende skadd på Utøya vil få 600.000 kroner i erstatning. Det forrige tilbudet var 350.000 kroner.

Erstatningen pårørende, etterlatte og skadde etter terrorangrepet i Oslo og på Utøya blir nesten doblet i forhold til statens første tilbud.

Det er lagt vekt på at terrorsaken står i en særstilling i norsk rettspleie under behandlingen av klagene på beløpene som først ble gitt i oppreisningserstatning, ifølge advokat Nadia Hall. Hun representerer omtrent halvparten av dem som trolig vil ha krav på oppreisning for fysiske og psykiske skader.

C’est ce que vient de montrer une étude publiée aujourd’hui par la municipalité. Dans le rapport, cette expression un peu spectaculaire : « Une ville, deux mondes... ». C’est exagéré, sans doute, mais les résulats de l’enquête sont assez contrastés et posent un certain nombre de questions. Il y a une grande différence socio-culturelle entre les quartiers, et il semble qu’ici, les quartiers « pauvres » et polulaires, lieux de résidence de l’essentiel de la population immigrée, soient les plus touchés.

Since 1964, Colombia’s different conservative and oligarchic governments have been threatened by the violent struggle of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) and the National Liberation Army (ELN). Recognizing that the country’s intense counter-insurgency military strategy to defeat these guerillas has failed to put an end to the conflict, Bogota’s government now seems more open to political discussions. Formal peace talks will therefore be held in Oslo this month. Not only does the government enjoy more popular support, but the security forces of the country, and especially violent paramilitaries, are now better controlled by the central government. Yet, the International Crisis Group recalls that “a deal would not eliminate violence” and argues that, in order to reconsolidate Columbia’s statehood, “only strong social and political ownership of that deal can guarantee that it leads to the lasting peace.” But will this possible in the near future?

After decades of failed negotiations and attempts to defeat the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) guerrillas and the smaller National Liberation Army (ELN) militarily, a political solution to the Western Hemisphere’s oldest conflict may be in sight. Following a year of secret contacts, formal peace talks with FARC are to open in Oslo in October 2012 and continue in Havana. They may be extended to the ELN. There seems a firmer willingness to reach an agreement, as the government realises military means alone cannot end the conflict and FARC appears to recognise that the armed struggle permits survival but little else. With no ceasefire in place, both sides must act with restraint on the battlefield to generate immediate humanitarian improvements. And they will need to balance the requirements of fast, discreet negotiations and those of representativeness and inclusion. The government and the guerrillas have the historic responsibility to strike a deal, but only strong social and political ownership of that deal can guarantee that it leads to the lasting peace that has been elusive for so long.

Le Mollah Krekar est en détention en attendant que soit connus les résultats de son appel. A la fin du mois d’août, il a été condamné à un an de prison pour menaces, subordination de témoins et appel au meurtre. Il a été transféré dans une prison de haute sécurité pour l’éloigner des autres détenus, en particulier les prisonniers musulmans. L’argument de la police et des autorités pénitentiaires, c’est que la forte personnalité du Mollah représentait des risques pour la sécurité de la prison dans la mesure où il aurait pu prendre le rôle de "chef de file" et influencer [avec ses idées extrémistes] d’autres détenus en "crise d’identité" et donc très vulnérables, selon les explications de Magnus Ranstorp, directeur de recherche au Collège de défense suédois. « On peut penser qu’il allait essayer de les recruter » a conclut M. Ranstorp. Un des avocat du mollah, Arvid Sjødin, a quant à lui expliqué que Krekar s’était bien adapté à la vie dans la prison « et qu’il cherche seulement à s’imposer comme modèle pour les jeunes musulmans ».

Selon le journal VG, Krekar passe ses journées à lire et éditer ses propres textes, qui sont principalement « de la propagande, de la poésie et de la théologie islamique. »

Haro sur le vin, les spiritueux et les parfums dans les aéroports : Un bénéfice de plus d’un million de Nok par jour !

Deux entreprises exercent un quasi-monopole sur "les duty free shop" dans les aéroports norvégiens. Et le moins qu’on puisse dire, c’est qu’elles sont bien nanties...

90 pour cent de l’argent que nous dépensons dans les magasins "duty free" revient au groupe Travel Retail Norway (TRN), dirigé par Terje Stykket.

Depuis que la société a repris l’exploitation de presque toutes les boutiques "duty free" en Norvège en 2005, elle a fait un bénéfice total de près de 1,5 milliards de NoK (210 millions d’euros). Terje Stykket est propriétaire de 25 % des parts de l’entreprise : Il est la 153e personne la plus riche de Norvège, selon la liste Kapital 2010 des 400 personnes les plus riches du pays. Sa fortune est estimée à 1,1 milliards de NoK (152 millions d’euros).

Le reste est détenu par la société allemande Heinemann KG à hauteur de 50 pour cent, et qui fournit également des produits à ces boutiques hors taxes, et le Norgesgruppen pour 25 pour cent Spar, Joker, Kiwi, Meny, Ultra, Deli de Luca, etc...).

En 2011, TRN a fait un profit de 3,8 milliards de NoK (530 millions d’euros), en hausse de 13 pour cent par rapport à l’année précédente. Le bénéfice avant impôt était de 316 millions de Nok (45 millions d’Euros), soit une augmentation de 17 pour cent.

L’argent provient de six boutiques hors taxes situées à Oslo Gardermoen, Trondheim, Bergen, Stavanger et Kristiansand, et deux deux magasins situés dans les terminaux domestiques à l’aéroport d’Oslo Gardemoen et Værnes.

Håkon Fjeld-Hansen , un des directeurs de TRN, explique : « y a une forte augmentation dans les ventes de bouteilles de vin en particulier. Les passagers n’achètent pas forcément plus, mais des marchandises beaucoup plus chère. On voit que les gens aiment faire des emplettes. l’alcool représente la plus grande part du chiffre d’affaires dans les aéroports. » Les norvégiens se permettent de faire dans un aérogare ce qu’ils ne feraient jamais dans la vie courante, chez eux, ou en ville : boire une bière ou !un grand verre de vin à 6:00 du matin ! or, dans les aérogares, ils font la queue devant les bars en attendant qu’ils ouvrent...

Airport Retail Norway (ARN) est la deuxième entreprise la plus importante spécialisée dans la vente en franchise de droits. Elle exploite aussi des boutiques hors taxes à l’aéroport de Moss Rygge et Sandefjord Torp, en plus de magasins de vêtements dans quatre aéroports.

Ses bénéfices ont atteints en 2011 530 millions de NiK (74 millions d’euros), soit plus de 15 pour cent par rapport à l’année précédente. Cela s’est traduit par un bénéfice avant impôt de 56 millions de Nok (8 millions d’euros), soit une augmentation de 45 pour cent par rapport à 2010.

ARN appartient Jotunfjell Partners, dirigée par les investisseurs norvégiens Kristoffer Olsen et Hans Kristian Melbye. Kristoffer Olsen : "nous avons noté une forte augmentation des ventes en particulier à l’aéroport de Rygge où la compagnie Ryanair a considérablement renforcé sa présence"

Les deux sociétés TRN et ARN font à elles seules, avec huit magasins, un bénéfice annuel de 372 millions de Nok (52 millions d’euros) soit plus d’un million de Nok par jour (140 000 euros)
En plus de ces huit boutiques, Avinor gère quelques autres boutiques hors taxes Avinor dans les aéroports de Tromsø, Bodø, Haugesund et Molde.

Le rapport annuel d’Avinor pour l’année 2011 ne dit rien sur le montant des recettes de ces magasins. Le poste « Revenus » indique simplement 495 millions de NoK (69 millions d’euros), mais cela inclut également la vente d’autres biens et services.

Une nouvelle expulsion de Roms à Oslo le 3 septembre 2012

La police prévoit d’expulser les Roms installés dans des p&arcs du quartier de Grønland à Oslo sur la demande insistante des riverains qui se plaignent « qu’il y ait des rats et des excréments partout, et que le quartier sent très mauvais ». Soit. Mais comme en juillet lors d’actions similaires, aucune alternative n’est pensée ni prévue. Ce qui veut dire qu’on avancera pas d’un pouce et que la situation restera la même car le Roms s’installeront ailleurs ou reviendront à la même place. Par ailleurs, cette façon de stigmatiser les Roms va encore plus attiser la haine et les remarques xénophobes. En juillet, les réseaux sociaux et les forums de débat ont vu fleurir une campagne de haine et de racisme que la Norvège n’avait encore jamais connu, forçant même le premier ministre, Jens Stoltenberg, à sortir de sa réserve et à dire publiquement qu’il en était profondément choqué...

Kåre Stølen, stasjonssjef ved Grønland politistasjon, mener det er nødvendig med en ny aksjon mot romfolket i Oslo.

Mandag kveld vil politiet i Oslo hindre romfolk i å slå leir for natten i Sars gate og i Vaterlandsparken. Ifølge politiet er det klager fra naboer over rotter og avføring som gjør aksjonen nødvendig.

Romfolket blir til stadighet bedt om å forlate sine ulovlige oppholdssteder i byen. Tidlig i juli foretok politiet en lignende aksjon i Vaterlandsparken, men allerede dagen etterpå var mange på plass igjen.

Nå vil politiet foreta en ny aksjon etter at beboerne i området, Lakkegata skole, Riverside ungdomsklubb og bydelsoverlegen i Gamle Oslo har bedt politiet om det, skriver Aftenposten.

Un britannique arrêté pour avoir écrit des propos racistes et affirmé son soutien à Breivik sur Facebook

C’est le journal britannique le Daily Mail qui rapporte cette information : la police britannique a arrêté jeudi après-midi un homme à Gillingham dans le Kent. Il est accusé d’avoir tenu des propos racistes et félicité Anders Behring Breivik pour ses actes sur le réseau social Facebook.

En 44 år gammel mann har blitt arrestert etter rasistiske uttalelser og støtteerklæringer til Anders Behring Breivik på nettet.

Det er den engelske avisen Daily Mail som bringer nyheten om at britisk politi har pågrepet en mann i Gillingham i Kent torsdag ettermiddag.

Briten skal ha fremsatt rasistiske ytringer og rost terrordømte Anders Behring Breivik på nettsamfunnet Facebook.

Politiet i Kent har opplyst at trebarnsfaren er siktet for å ha provosert frem rasehat. Den arbeidsledige mannen fra byen Gillingham sitter nå i varetekt.

The Oslo District Court yesterday ruled that fascist mass murderer Anders Behring Breivik was sane and handed down the maximum sentence of 21 years imprisonment for his twin terrorist attacks on July 22, 2011. A mass shooting of social democratic youth on the island of Utoeya and an earlier car bomb led to the deaths of 77.

Announcing the decision, Judge Elisabeth Arntzen sentenced Breivik to “preventive detention”, which means the period of his jail term can be extended as long as he is deemed a danger to society.

Verdict Breivik : "Anders Behring Breivik ne sera pas autorisé à faire de longue déclaration"

Un article publié sur le site de la radio télévision nationale norvégienne (NRK) relate la rencontre d’Anders Behring Breivik avec ses avocats Geir Lippestad et Vibeke Hein Bæra à la veille du verdict (qui devrait être rendu le vendredi 24 août à 10 heures).

- « nous le préparons pour affronter la journée de demain , ont expliqué ses avocats à la sortie de la prison d’Ila. Il ne sera pas autorisé à faire une longue déclaration. Nous lui avons expliqué de quels recours il dispose selon le jugement rendu. Ce qui est clair, pour lui, c’est que s’il est déclaré irresponsable, il fera appel. Par contre, il a déjà dit qu’il accepterait le jugement s’il est déclaré responsable de ses actes. » Dans a plaidoirie, Geir Lippestad avait demandé que Breivik soit reconnu sain d’esprit et comme un "terroriste cynique", et non pas "dément" avec obligation de soins psychiatriques comme l’ont requis les procureurs.

Il semble que Breivik, à défaut de pouvoir faire un long discours, a préparé des commentaires en fonctions des "résultats possibles". Le jugement sera lu à 10:00 vendredi matin, puis sera longuement expliqué. La séance devrait durer entre 5 et 6 heures.

Breivik est la première personne en Norvège a être poursuivi pour violation de la loi sur le terrorisme (article 147a du code pénal). Les procureurs estiment qu’il devrait être condamné pour deux actes distincts de terrorisme, même si les deux sont étroitement liés (l’explosion de la bombe dans le quartier du gouvernement et le massacre d’Utøya).

Selon Geir Lippestad, après le jugement, Breivik va commencer la rédaction de livres dans lesquels il souhaite détailler ses positions politiques et son idéologie. Lippestad a précisé qu’Il reçoit un courrier abondant venant du monde entier (mais certaines lettres sont censurées par le personnel de la prison) et qu’il peut se prévaloir de nombreux soutiens.

What do a Norwegian terrorist, a rightist politician in The Netherlands, some American think tanks and an editor of The Broker share in common? They all assign an important role to the work of Antonio Gramsci in the making of contemporary politics.

Who but a few history buffs today has even heard of this Italian Marxist, who died in 1937 as a prisoner of the Fascist regime. Apparently Norwegian terrorist Anders Breivik has, and so has Martin Bosma, the spin doctor of the Dutch rightist party PVV, as well as William S. Lind, an American publicist and promoter of cultural conservatism.

The undersigned, now editor of The Broker, was once a devoted scholar of Gramsci. At the University of Amsterdam and also at York University in Toronto, Canada, I took part in exchanges among a group of International Relations students who identified themselves with ‘neo-Gramscian analysis’. I still consider the work of Gramsci a source of inspiration. In my view, Gramsci’s notes on power, in particular his concept of hegemony, and his historical analysis of state-society relations continue to bear relevance today.

When most of us hear the word terrorist this is the picture that forms in our heads because it is the most flagged stereotype.

The word terror existed before the terms terrorist or terrorism were created. The Oxford dictionary describes terror as ‘a feeling of extreme fear.’ The Cambridge Smart Thesaurus explains it as violent action which causes extreme fear. The Cambridge Thesaurus goes on to explain that terror is synonymous with fear, panic, fright, horror and dread. The Collins English Dictionary describes terror as great fear, panic or dread inspired by a troublesome person. The definitions of terror cannot get any better than these three sources, or at least my Advanced Level English Literature teacher, Miss Mpeti would say so. I believed and do still believe her.

Using these definitions, it means that any person who commits acts or threatens to commit acts that instill fear, horror and panic in people is committing terror and is therefore a terrorist. So from:

Osama Bin Laden (considered to be the worst terrorist ever) who took out the twin towers and killed many in the USA;
Al Qaeda who burn whole villages in Afghanistan and Pakistan;
Joseph Kony who killed, raped and maimed civilians in Northern Uganda and continue doing so in parts of Southern Sudan and the DRC;
Omar Al Bashir who killed, displaced, and instigated the rape and are still killing, displacing and instigating the rape thousands in Darfur, South Kordofan and South Sudan;
George Bush responsible for wars that caused and still cause the death and maiming of thousands in Iraq and Afghanistan;
Benjamin Netanyau and his Israeli government who have caused great suffering on Palestinian civilians;
Retaliating Palestinian Liberation Organisation members who attack Israelis with suicide bombers;
Genociders in Germany in particular the Holocaust by Nazis, Rwanda 1994, Zimbabwe in the Gukurahundi 1987 and Operation Mavhoterapapi 2008, Cambodia mass killing by the Khmer Rouge, Indonesian slaughter of the East Timorese;
Al-Shabab attackers on Uganda in July 2010;
Individuals responsible for the numerous bomb blasts in Nigeria, India, Pakistan;
Umar Farouk, the Nigerian who attempted to detonate bombs in an aeroplane and;
Anders Behring Breivik the Norwegian man who killed more than 87 of his own people they are all terrorists.

Les graines idéologiques qui avaient été semées depuis de longues années, ont porté leurs fruits de haine. Un jeune homme âgé de 32 ans, Anders Behring Breivik, a assassiné froidement 77 personnes dans un double attentat commis en Norvège, vendredi 22 juillet 2011. A l’explosif contre un bâtiment gouvernemental à Oslo, d’abord, puis ensuite en fusillant méthodiquement des dizaines de participant-e-s à un camp d’été de la jeunesse du Parti travailliste (formation socialiste au gouvernement) sur l’île d’Utoeya. L’assassin avait préparé son crime pendant plusieurs années, au moins depuis 2009 ; et pendant au moins trois ans, il avait rédigé son soi-disant « manifeste », intitulé « 2083 : Une déclaration européenne d’indépendance ».
Ce document indigeste de 1.518 pages, disponible en langue anglaise sur Internet est censé expliquer son délire idéologique. Il avait été envoyé par e-Mail à environ 1.500 personnes, quelques heures avant que le double crime ne soit commis. Quasiment en même temps, un film vidéo d’une durée de douze minutes avait été posté sur « Youtube » ; il comporte une sorte de résumé des thèses idéologiques du tueur.
Cette affaire embarrasse l’extrême droite de plusieurs pays européens. Les enquêteurs norvégiens ont pu identifier un certain nombre des 1.500 destinataires à qui avait été expédié le message électronique comportant le « manifeste ». En Belgique, on trouve un député du parti d’extrême droite « Vlaams Belang », Tanguy Veys, parmi les destinataires. Ce dernier s’est déclaré « ne pas être fier » d’avoir reçu ce message non sollicité, le fameux vendredi du crime.
Geert Wilders, le chantre de la droite « populiste » aux Pays-Bas (17 % aux élections du 09 juin 2010), a évoqué un « camouflet » pour son camp politique. En Grande-Bretagne, la « English Defence League » (EDL), un mouvement d’extrême droite spécifiquement anti-musulman et ayant parfois recours à la violence, est également concernée. Breivik avait encore participé à une manifestation de cette organisation, en mars 2010, pour défendre le droit de Geert Wilders à venir présenter ses thèses virulentes sur « le danger musulman » sur le sol britannique.

For many commentators – such as Boris Johnson – Anders Behring Breivik was nothing more than a deranged, lone gunman. There is no point, they argue, even attempting to understand the motivations behind such an appalling act of violence: he is quite patently mad. These are not excuses ever granted to Islamic fundamentalist terrorists. As Luke Akehurst has so movingly put it, Friday’s massacre was an act of political terrorism. It was, in part, an attempt to wipe out the next generation of left-wing leaders, and even to frighten people out of joining the Norwegian Labour Party.

According to Janne Kristiansen of the Norwegian intelligence services: “…in my opinion this is clearly a sane person because he has been too focused for far too long and he has been doing things so correctly.” Breivik’s lawyer looks set to plead insanity on behalf of his client, but I hope this argument is thrown out of court. Human history is littered with horrifying crimes committed by (coldly) rational, sane human beings. The Holocaust is surely the most stomach-churning example because it happened on a systematic, industrialised, mass scale – and was a perverse enterprise that involved hundreds of thousands of people.

The European far-right used to target Jews and black people: today, it is Muslims. In the Netherlands, Geert Wilders – who heads the third biggest party – campaigns against the “Islamisation of the Netherlands”, compares the Koran to Mein Kampf and wants to send Muslims out of the country. In France, the Front National also targets Muslims – but the mainstream right has also tapped into Islamophobic sentiments with the banning of the burka. In Switzerland, the People’s Party – who topped the vote in an election attacked as racist by UN monitors – led a successful campaign to ban minarets.

Here in Britain, Muslims have been the the British National Party’s target of choice for years. The last BNP manifesto pledged to confront ‘the Islamic Colonisation of Britain’, and BNP leaflets attack Muslims in the most vitriolic terms.

Anti-Semitism once draped itself in anti-capitalist clothes by talking about Jewish bankers. That’s why the German socialist August Bebel called anti-Semitism “the socialism of fools”. And, today, all too often Islamophobia dresses itself up as secularism: it has become the “secularism of fools”.

I’m sure many of you watched the scenes taking placed in Norway with horror and rightly so.

Particularly disturbing was the knee jerk reaction, reminiscent of the news coverage following the immediate aftermath of the Oklahoma bombings, the continual repetition that the incident had all the characteristics of an Islamist plot. The “gates of Vienna” mindset tirades posted in the comments sections of online coverage (before they apprehended the white blonde suspect) made for particularly infuriating reading; page upon page of ranting amounting to nothing less than an incitement towards a Muslim/Asian Pogrom. This prejudged notion of Muslim involvement lasted right up until the shocked exclamations that the gunman was blonde and of Norwegian appearance. The Daily Express still couldn’t resist putting in a section about Jihadists and cartoons of the prophet Muhammed the next day despite contrary evidence, and The Sun went with the even crasser “Al-Qaeda Massacre, Norway’s 9/11.” This coverage is merely a manifestation of a wider arching problem created by an amalgamation of factors created by politicians, the media and the far right all pursuing their own particular agendas which happen to have a convergence of mutual interest. There is clearly a double standard involved in the reporting of terrorism in the mainstream media largely dependent upon motives and perceived aims. A clear example of this is the coverage of the Tea Party inspired would-be assassin of U.S congresswomen Gabrielle Gifford, Jared Loughner. Despite having clear political affiliations and using means that would be classed as terrorism by even the loosest of definitions applied to Islamic Extremists, he was barely ever described as such. The subsequent coverage followed the paradigm and similar characterisation of Timothy McVeigh, David Copeland (the Soho bomber) and undoubtedly Anders Behring Breivik; that of the insane lone gunman.

There appears to be reluctance in the immediate coverage following the Norway bombing and shooting to call him for what he is, namely a right wing, Christian, conservative terrorist inspired by the resurgence of the far right in Europe and America. Despite clear right wing allegiances the media have persisted in portraying him as an insane individual and shown little will to analyse the underlying causes and factors which drove Breivik to commit these atrocities; such as their own innately Islamophobic and disproportionate news coverage of terrorism plots. Twitter and Facebook posts by Breivik have shown his admiration for the Tea Party movement and advocated a cultural European movement founded upon a similar basis. In his posts he also talks of starting a “cultural defence” street movement largely inspired by our very own EDL with whom he had contact. As anarchists we should be above the exploitation of human suffering in order to gain political brownie points, however there is a clear link between the concessions made to the new forms of “acceptable racism” since 2001 and its tacit acceptance by mainstream culture that has led to a legitimisation of such views which must be pointed out. With so much deference to authority people still often look to mainstream culture and figures to gauge which views are socially acceptable and which ones are not. The platform given to groups such as the EDL and BNP has allowed their lies to become acceptable norms, of which the aforementioned media coverage and continual emphasis on the ethnicity of the perpetrator are just one manifestation. This acceptance has been endorsed by politicians who seek to politically posture as tough by using immigration as a vote winner (See Black Flag Issue 232 “Victims of the political game.”), keep people occupied with banalities and garner support for unpopular foreign policy by dehumanising the “enemy.” With David Cameron even making dangerous speeches such as his infamous “multiculturalism has failed,” speech on the day of a major EDL mobilisation in Luton. Cameron and the Tories (not renowned for their tolerance) have literally handed the far right PR material; parts of the speech were even quoted on National Front literature in the Scottish Elections last May. The media pander to this type of sentiment and even, debatably, cause it in part with their sensationalist stories and even outright lies to sell papers. They then feign ignorance at what could have possibly driven this cultural nationalist to fear for the future of his culture and country so much so that he would resort to such abhorrent acts in an effort to help his country?

Together politicians and the media have created an atmosphere where prejudice sells, which is becoming evident with the far right making gains throughout Europe and creating a popular “European Caliphate” and “demographic time bomb” myth, which is now permeating itself into society as a legitimate view. This Norwegian incident and the attack on Gabrielle Gifford should draw attention to the difference between free speech and incitement to attacks on minority populations and politicians who, meaning well, may be defending multiculturalism. I also hope this will clearly indicate the pitfalls of tolerating bigotry in the name of freedom of speech and act as a catalyst towards the rejection of the edifices of “respectable racism” such as the BNP and EDL. I can already see their counter argument to the idea that Breivik’s actions are a manifestation of the vicious myths and lies they spread: this was one unrepresentative isolated incident, not all nationalists are extremists, the irony of which appears to be lost on nationalists and the far right.

Ses ennemis de la droite ultra conservatrice l’accuse d’avoir joué un rôle clé dans la « transformation de la société norvégienne homogène en un enfer multiculturel... » Ceux qui vivent en Norvège, norvégiens ou pas, pourraient bien rire de ce fantasme obscène si les circonstances n’étaient pas aussi tragiques.

Une de ses réflexions sur le multiculturalisme est intéressante : Si le multiculturalisme est une sorte de doctrine selon laquelle les groupes culturels doivent être autorisés à vivre selon leurs propres valeurs, pourquoi pas, à condition que cette idéologie ne force pas l’individu à choisir obligatoirement une culture contre une autre, et que sa liberté de choisir l’intégration sociale "hors" groupe communautaire reste entière. La Norvège reste très en pointe sur la question de l’intégration des migrants bien que la situation se soit dégradée depuis 2009.

Il fait une grande différence entre la diversité et le multiculturalisme, la règle de fond étant que soit préservée le droit des individus à choisir leur destin, dans les limites fixées par les normes communes. Ces normes sont toujours en négociation dans les sociétés complexes comme l’est la Norvège : il faut rappeler les violents combats idéologiques entre chrétiens conservateurs et laïque dans les années 1900, les conflits liés aux zones urbaines et rurales, ou encore à la "guerre linguistique" entre le bokmål (norvégien littéraire) et le nynorsk (néo-norvégien), autant d’événements qui ont construit la Norvège moderne.

Pour finir, cette autre réflexion : « Nous ne vivons pas dans un siècle où un projet national visant à restaurer la pureté ethnique est particulièrement réaliste » dit-il dans une belle litote. « Nous n’avons pas d’autres choix que de vivre tous ensemble, frontières ouvertes, dans la diversité et en acceptant les différences. C’est ce qui enrichit une nation.

Il est bien entendu possible de vivre dans cette diversité, sans pour autant abandonner les valeurs fondamentales, les idéaux humanistes sur lesquels la société norvégienne est basée. »

Ukrenkelig. Vi har ikke noe annet valg enn å leve med forskjellighet, uten dermed å gi avkall på grunnleggende verdier.

Skrekkeksempel. I flere år har jeg vært en sentral Prügelknabe for en håndfull norske nettsteder som er kritiske til innvandring, flerkulturalitet og – kanskje i særdeleshet – muslimer. Ofte blir jeg nevnt som et skrekkeksempel på en akademiker som gjør alt han kan for å underminere norske verdier og norsk kultur, omtrent like ofte som en forvirret multikulturalist som elsker alt fremmed og forakter alt hjemlig. Av og til har jeg sendt inn kommentarer til kritikerne, hvor jeg ber om at de belegger påstandene med sitater. Da blir det gjerne stille.

Lenge betraktet jeg hetsen som harmløs sjikane, også når den havnet i innboksen min som anonym hatmail. Nå er jeg blitt usikker på om denne vurderingen har vært riktig, etter å ha blitt gjort oppmerksom på at Anders Behring Breivik viser seg å være en av dem som flere ganger har oppgitt mitt navn som symbol på alt som er gått galt med Norge. Gitt situasjonen i Norge får ordet personangrep en spesiell valør om dagen, og jeg skal derfor være personlig i denne kronikken.

Coop Norge, la principale coopérative de magasins de Norvège, a déclaré avoir retiré de la vente les jeux vidéos cités par Anders Behring Breivik dans son « manifeste ». Il expliquait avoir joué régulièrement à certains jeux, dont « World of Warcraft » et « Call of Duty - Modern Warfare », et ce notamment dans le but de préparer ses actes visant le « multiculturalisme ».
