L’élection présidentielle de 2012 a, dès fin 2011, fait de la Hadopi l’un des rares thèmes de campagne numériques forts du Parti socialiste. Si les deux principaux partis avaient peu de propositions à formuler sur les nouvelles technologies, la suppression de la Hadopi était devenue une des volontés affichées de la gauche. A la mi-septembre, quatre mois après l’élection de François Hollande, la ministre de la culture tirait d’ailleurs encore à boulets rouges sur l’institution, jugée coûteuse et inutile, après l’unique condamnation d’un internaute à 150 euros d’amende.

A-t-il seulement été question de l’accès à la culture et à l’information pour les pauvres ? Prix d’une place de ciné à plus de 10 €, prix d’un CD audio à 20 € et plus, ne vous étonnez pas qu’on télécharge ...
Allez, puisqu’il faut bien vivre avec de l’argent, je serais prêt à payer 10 € de plus par mois sur mon abonnement Internet pour que les ayant-droits puissent être rémunérés à condition que je ne sois pas emmerdé par des DRM, des ripostes graduées ou autres #paywalls

only 55% of research papers produced at least partly with its money [are] compliant with its existing policy requiring they be available free of charge within six months of publication. Mark Walport, director of the Wellcome Trust, said in a statement that it was “simply unacceptable” that so many publications were behind #paywalls and is now stepping up pressure on academic institutions and researchers to make sure those who take its money comply with the rules.

There has never been a mass market for good journalism in this country. What there used to be was a mass market for print ads, coupled with a mass market for a physical bundle of entertainment, opinion, and information; these were tied to an institutional agreement to subsidize a modicum of real journalism. In that mass market, the opinions of the politically engaged readers didn’t matter much, outnumbered as they were by people checking their horoscopes. This suited advertisers fine; they have always preferred a centrist and distanced political outlook, the better not to alienate potential customers. When the politically engaged readers are also the only paying readers, however, their opinion will come to matter more, and in ways that will sometimes contradict the advertisers’ desires for anodyne coverage.
(...) slowly slowly, form follows funding. For the moment at least, the most promising experiment in user support means forgoing mass in favor of passion; this may be the year where we see how papers figure out how to reward the people most committed to their long-term survival.
