Mark Adams — painter, printmaker and cartographer — is showing his newest piece, “Provincetown Quad,” in a group show with artists Amy Arbus, David Carrino, Richard Klein and Sarah Lutz at The Schoolhouse Gallery, 494 Commercial St., Provincetown. The show, which opens with a reception from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday, Aug. 8, runs through Aug. 27.

“Provincetown Quad” is a beautifully conceived map of the tip of Cape Cod. The 8-by-10-foot installation is created with 20 distinct cradled birch panels, each one 18-by-24 by 1.5 inches. Within the grid, Adams has placed two lithe swimmers at Long Point, a crazy group of crows in the middle of Provincetown, and plant studies. Each panel is part of a greater whole, but can also stand alone or work together within a smaller grouping of the grid. Made with acrylic and oil paints, ink and other materials, some of the individual images are highly representational, others are abstractions and still others are marks of the mapmaker.
