  • Washington Post propagandist for Israel warns Sanders to stay away from the subject, forever
    http://mondoweiss.net/2016/04/washington-post-propagandist-for-israel-warns-sanders-to-stay-away-from-

“Sanders faces denunciations for ignorant remarks about Israel” is the headline in the Washington Post, on a column by Jennifer Rubin about Bernie Sanders’s comments about Israel and Palestine to the Daily News.

It is propaganda from start to finish, beginning with the headline.

    Let me translate.

    • Democratic debate: Is Netanyahu welcome at White House or an arrogant, deceptive asshole?

In the last 24 hours the hiring of Simone Zimmerman as Bernie Sanders’s Jewish outreach director has caught fire on the internet, thanks to the pro-Israel community’s outrage that she doesn’t like Israeli PM Netanyahu. Zimmerman expressed herself on Facebook during the Gaza slaughter of 2014.

“Fuck you, Bibi… you sanctioned the murder of over 2,000 people this summer.”

Then over Netanyahu’s showing up the president last March by speaking at Congress to try to upend the Iran deal:

“Bibi Netanyahu is an arrogant, deceptive, cynical, manipulative asshole.”

This is a good debate to have.

In an act of political cowardice, the campaign of Bernie Sanders has suspended a young staffer named Simone Zimmerman, who was recently hired to coordinate the campaign’s outreach to Jewish communities, for criticizing Benjamin Netanyahu, the right-wing Prime Minister of Israel, in a year-old post on Facebook.

    • At Democratic Debate, Sanders Stands Up for Palestinians While Clinton Takes Strong pro-Israel Stance

There comes a time when you have to say that ’Netanyahu isn’t right all of the time,’ Sanders says, criticizes ’disproportionate’ use of force in Gaza; Clinton say Hamas deliberately put civilians at risk.

Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton took a strong pro-Israel stance in a presidential debate in Brooklyn on Thursday, while her rival Bernie Sanders again doubled down on his criticism of Israel’s conduct during the 2014 conflict with the Gaza Strip, proceeding to state that “we’re going to have to say that Netanyahu isn’t right all of the time.”

“Of course Israel has the right to defend itself. That’s not up for debate,” Sanders said, but added: “We had some 10,000 civilians who were wounded, 1,500 who were killed. Was that a disproportionate attack? I believe it was.”

Stressing what he said was the need for an “even-handed approach” by the U.S., Sanders said that “as someone who’s 100 percent pro-Israel, in the long run, if we’re ever to bring peace… we have to treat Palestinian people with respect and dignity.”

In response, Clinton touted her role negotiating a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in 2012, and added that “there’s always second guessing when there’s a war.” Israel did not invite the rocket attacks on its territory, Clinton said, and accused Hamas of conducting warfare in a way which deliberately placed civilians in harm’s way. After Israel left Gaza and “turned over the keys to the Palestinians,” Hamas took over the Strip and turned Gaza into a “terrorist haven,” Clinton said.

With regards to the conflict as a whole, Clinton said that the U.S. should continue to pursue a two-state solution for the conflict, and added that had Yasser Arafat agreed to Ehud Barak’s proposal in Camp David, there would have been a Palestinian state today. Regarding Sanders’ criticism of Netanyahu, Clinton said that while no Israeli leader is always right, “it’s a difficult position.” It’s difficult to seek peace when there’s a terrorist group in Gaza that doesn’t want you to exist, Clinton said.

Criticizing Clinton for not mentioning the Palestinians in her AIPAC speech, Sanders said that the U.S. needs to assume an evenhanded approach to the conflict if it intends to bring peace to the area.

“Describing the problem is easier than trying to solve it,” Clinton responded.

Last week in a New York Daily News interview, Sanders erroneously inflated the number of Palestinian civilians killed during the 2014 Gaza conflict, for which he has since pulled back after a conversation with ADL’s Jonathan Greenblatt.

Sanders is currently trailing Hillary Clinton in the April 19 New York primary by double digits. According to a recent Fox New poll, Clinton leads Sanders among Jewish voters by 24 points (59-35 percent).

In 2013, the Jewish vote made up 16-19 percent of the electorate in the New York City Democratic mayoral primary.

Earlier on Thursday, the New York Times reported that Sanders suspended his new Jewish outreach coordinator, after one of her past Facebook posts resurfaced in which she used coarse language to criticize Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The Washington Free Beacon reported on Wednesday that Simone Zimmerman wrote last year on Facebook that “Bibi Netanyahu is an arrogant, deceptive, cynical, manipulative a**hole."

  • With Regard to Netanyahu’s speech, Nancy Pelosi said it all
    http://www.dailykos.com/story/2015/03/03/1368277/-With-Regard-to-Netanyahu-s-speech-Nancy-Pelosi-said-it-all

After reiterating the U.S.’s bond with Israel, Leader Pelosi said the following:

That is why, as one who values the U.S. – Israel relationship, and loves Israel, I was near tears throughout the Prime Minister’s speech – saddened by the insult to the intelligence of the United States as part of the P5 +1 nations, and saddened by the condescension toward our knowledge of the threat posed by Iran and our broader commitment to preventing nuclear proliferation.

Netanyahu was almost flip when he sought to assuage fears that collapse of these negotiations would inevitably mean war, arguing that all we have to do to get a better deal is impose a few more sanctions and the Iranians will cave and come running back to the table to surrender completely their enrichment capacity. Netanyahu would have us believe that the regime in Iran that allegedly cannot be deterred, that is completely irrational, and would gladly suffer nuclear annihilation just for the opportunity to attack Israel, will surrender everything in these negotiations in the face of sanctions that could shave another few percent off their GDP. According to Netanyahu, the mullahs don’t fear nuclear annihilation, but they panic at the prospect of an economic recession.

    Insulting, indeed. Condescension, indeed.

Bibi Netanyahu either thinks we are idiots or he is the most dangerously deluded leader on the world stage today. It’s one or the other.

    • To call that position “absurd” is too kind. You don’t have to be some kind of foreign policy whiz to grasp that there’s something weird about arguing that 1) Iran is a nation run by genocidal maniacs; 2) they want nuclear weapons so they can annihilate Israel; and 3) the best way to stop this is to abandon negotiations to limit their nuclear program and just wait to see what they do. But that’s the position Netanyahu and his supporters in the Republican Party are now committed to.

      http://www.romandie.com/news/Nucleaire-lIran-accuse-Netanyahu-de-mentir/571495.rom

  • ‘Kiss Me!’ says Bibi to Boehner, by Raouf J. Halaby
    http://mondediplo.com/blogs/kiss-me-says-bibi-to-boehner

Published in 1929, Thomas Mann’s novella Mario and the Magician compellingly evokes the rise of fascism in Italy and Germany. It is also a character template for egotistical megalomaniacs enamored of their (delusional) self-importance and nationalistic jingoism. Collectively, these tyrants share one pathological obsession: they love to give speeches to adoring audiences.

    How like Bibi Netanyahu.

    http://www.haaretz.com/blogs/west-of-eden/former-bush-administration-official-israel-may-be-behind-use-of-chemical-ar

Retired U.S. Army Colonel Lawrence Wilkerson, who once served as Secretary of State Colin Powell’s Chief of Staff, believes that the chemical weapons used in Syria may have been an Israeli “false flag” operation aimed at implicating Bashar Assad’s regime.

Wilkerson made his astounding assertion in an interview on Current TV, the network once owned by former Vice President Al Gore and recently purchased by Al-Jazeera.

Wilkerson said that the evidence that it was Assad’s regime that had used the chemical weapons was “flaky” and that it could very well have been the rebels or Israel who were the perpetrators. Asked why Israel would do such a thing, Wilkerson said: “I think we’ve got a basically geostrategically, geopolitical inept regime in Tel Aviv right now.”

“I think we saw really startling evidence of that,” Wilkerson continued, “in the fact that President Obama had to tell Bibi Netanyahu ‘Pick up the phone, you idiot, call Ankara and get yourself out of this strategic isolation you’re in right now.”

A “false flag” operation is a covert attack on foreign or domestic soil carried out by governments or organizations under a false identity, aimed at placing blame on the enemy. It originates with a ruse once used in naval warfare in which ships would hoist the enemy’s flags in order to infiltrate his ranks.

Wilkerson, 63, a former Army helicopter pilot who flew combat missions in Vietnam, served as Colin Powell’s chief of staff in 2002-2005. He was responsible for reviewing the intelligence information used by Powell in his by now infamous February 2003 United Nations Security Council appearance on Saddam Hussein’s weapons of mass destruction.

After his retirement, Wilkerson described this presentation as “a hoax” and became an outspoken critic of the Bush Administration’s handling of the Iraq war. He now serves as a professor at Virginia’s William and Mary College and is a guest commentator on several U.S. television networks.

Speaking on the Current’s Young Turks program, Wilkerson said that because of the instability in the Middle East, Israel’s current geo-strategic situation is “as dangerous as it’s been since 1948.” He added that President Obama “has got to be very circumspect about what he does in exacerbating that situation.”

“Netanyahu is clueless as to this,” Wilkerson said. “I hope President Obama gave him a lecture in geostrategic realities.”

  • Exactly Which “Terror Plots” Are Relevant to the Bulgarian Bombing?
    http://www.fpif.org/blog/exactly_which_terror_plots_are_relevant_to_the_bulgarian_bombing

So an arrest of a “suspected” Hezbollah operative who is “suspected” of a plan to kill Israeli tourists is the equivalent of an actual terrorist attack that has killed Israeli tourists? Bibi Netanyahu talked about the case on Fox News Sunday as though the Lebanese man arrested in Cyprus had done everything that was done in Burgas except actually detonate the bomb. So has the Israeli press.

But as I reported earlier this week, the Cyprus case is far murkier than Netanyahu and those U.S. officials have been suggesting. A senior Cypriot official told Reuters, “It is not clear what, or whether, there was a target in Cyprus.” Furthermore, the Cypriot investigators believe the Lebanese they suspected of planning to harm Israeli tourists was acting alone, which doesn’t make it sound like a Hezbollah operation at all. And perhaps most significant of all, there has no sign of a bomb or even of materials with which to make a bomb in conjunction with the Lebanese detainee. The Cypriot government has not yet decided whether there is enough evidence to prosecute the man on any violation of Cypriot laws.
