  • US ‘To End Contacts’ With Afghan NSA Over His Recent Remarks | TOLOnews
    https://www.tolonews.com/afghanistan/us-%E2%80%98-end-contacts%E2%80%99-afghan-nsa-over-his-recent-remarks

Mohib in a Washington news conference on March 14 accused the US Special Envoy Zalmay Khalilzad of “delegitimizing” the Kabul government by excluding it from peace negotiations with the #Taliban and acting like a “viceroy”. He also said that the US has created an information vacuum regarding the peace talks with the Taliban.

According to the Reuters report, the day after Mohib made his comments, David Hale — the US undersecretary of state for political affairs — told Ghani by phone that Mohib would no longer be received in Washington and that US civilian and military officials would not do business with him.

  • America’s billion-dollar mission in Lebanon
    http://www.middleeasteye.net/columns/america-s-billion-dollar-mission-lebanon-9828512

The recent revelation of US plans for a ginormous new embassy in Lebanon - right next door to the current ginormous US embassy in the village of Awkar north of Beirut- further underscores America’s hypocrisy in decrying alleged Iranian violations of its own backyard while setting up camp in Iran’s.

During remarks at a 27 May news conference at the Lebanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, US Ambassador to Lebanon David Hale gushed over the “sustainable and eco-friendly facility” that will soon be erected, complete with “water-saving native plantings” and installations of “American and Lebanese art.”

In the words of Hale, the “project represents a nearly $1bn dollar investment by the American government in our partnership between America and Lebanon” and “will give us more space to advance our common interests and reflect the growing and deepening ties between our two countries.”

    http://www.nna-leb.gov.lb/fr/show-news/16262/Hale-remet-un-avion-Cessna-39-arm%C3%A9e

    08BEIRUT1288 - 3 septembre 2008
LEBANON : WITH DAS HALE, VETERAN SUNNI FIGURE
STRESSES NEED FOR MORE ASSISTANCE TO THE ARMY
    http://wikileaks.org/cable/2008/09/08BEIRUT1288.html

In his August 30 meeting with visiting NEA DAS David Hale, Minister of Culture and respected leader of the Sunni community Tammam Salaam stressed the need for progress in the Israeli/Palestinian peace process to defuse extremism in the region. Praising Hizballah’s quick admission of culpability in the August 28 attack on a Lebanese Army helicopter, Salaam opined that a “security by consensus” understanding was emerging between Hizballah and the government. Salaam stressed the need for more powerful USG assistance to the Lebanese Armed Forces, warned about continuing sectarian tension and rising extremism, as demonstrated in Tripoli, and expressed moderate praise for Lebanon’s top three leaders, President Sleiman, PM Siniora, and Speaker Berri. End summary.

    08BEIRUT1296 - 4 septembre 2008
SUBJECT : LEBANON : LAF HELICOPTER ATTACK A HIZBALLAH ERROR ?

Minister of Culture Tammam Salaam told DAS Hale August 30, one day after the cabinet named Kahwagi as the new LAF Commander, that the appointment should give the impression that security is under control. Instead, the helicopter incident represented a step backwards. Salaam did not believe Hizballah would be held accountable for the incident, but credited Hizballah for not being “arrogant” in its public statements on the incident. Salaam added that what was evolving between Hizballah and the GOL was a “security by consensus” understanding.

    09BEIRUT443 - 16 avril 2009
LEBANON : MIKATI CAUTIOUSLY OPTIMISTIC ABOUT ELECTORAL OUTCOME, BUT SAYS RACE WILL BE CLOSE

Mikati observed that the process of state-building was difficult. He said an April 13 attack on a Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) patrol in the Bekaa valley proved that “curing” one institution was not enough, if the others were still “sick,” such as the Justice Ministry or the Internal Security Forces (the police). He called President Sleiman “wise,” and credited him for acting as an arbitrator between Lebanon’s political factions. If the electoral outcome produced a moderate majority, including a group of eight to ten independents, then Sleiman would be strengthened, he theorized. Among the independents, Mikati believed that he, current Minister of Culture Tammam Salaam (Sunni), and presidential advisor Nazem Khoury (Christian) were among those who could bring about this change.

  • On ne va pas se gêner: U.S. pressing UN Human Rights Commissioner to put off West Bank settlements probe
    http://www.haaretz.com/blogs/diplomania/u-s-pressing-un-human-rights-commissioner-to-put-off-west-bank-settlements-

The Obama administration is trying to delay the establishment of a panel appointed by the United Nations Human Rights Council to investigate the issue of Israeli settlements in the West Bank.

U.S. Middle East envoy David Hale met in Bern last week with UN Human Rights Commissioner Navi Pillay and asked her not to advance the matter in the near future.
