Facebook announced Thursday that it has permanently banned a host of prominent figures it described as “dangerous” from its platform, including right-wing commentator and former Breitbart News editor Milo Yiannopoulos, conspiracy theorist Alex Jones and Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan.

The platform said it has determined that those figures are “dangerous,” and removed them under their policy barring individuals and groups that promote hateful and violent messages.

Lebanon looks to hardline eastern Europe approach for Syrian refugees

Lebanon said on Wednesday it wanted to follow the example of eastern EU states that have largely rejected refugees as a way of resolving its own refugee crisis.
Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil sympathized with the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia’s refusal to accept refugee distribution quotas proposed by the EU after the 2015-16 migrant crisis, when more than a million people streamed into Europe, mostly from Syria.
Populist eastern EU leaders including Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, Poland’s powerbroker Jaroslaw Kaczynski and Czech President Milos Zeman, among others, blasted German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s “open door” policy on accepting migrants during that period.
These countries “were acting in their national interest and decided that the redistribution of refugees among European countries is not in their national interest, although they faced EU sanctions for that,” Bassil told reporters in Prague.
“I would like this attitude to be an inspiration for Lebanon, because every state must make national interests its top priority and at this moment Lebanon’s key national interest is the return of Syrian refugees to their homeland,” he added.
Lebanon says it is hosting 1.5 million Syrians — around a quarter of its own population. Less than one million of them are registered with UN refugee agency the UNHCR.
Most of the Syrian refugees in Lebanon live in insecurity and depend on international aid.
The International Monetary Fund has said their presence has led to increased unemployment and a rise in poverty due to greater competition for jobs.
The influx has also put strain on Lebanese water and electrical infrastructure.
Lebanese government officials and politicians have ramped up calls for Syrians to return home, but the United Nations has consistently warned that conditions in the war-ravaged country are not suitable for such returns.
“I would like Prague or Beirut to host a meeting, an initiative of countries seeking to plan and ensure the return of Syrian refugees to their country,” said Bassil.
“This would be immensely useful for both Lebanon and Syria and in general it would be the best solution to the human, humanitarian and political crisis we have right now and which could get worse in the future,” he said.

Spencer said that “clearly racialist” writers such as Benoist and Faye were “central influences” on his own thinking as an identitarian. He first discovered the work of Nouvelle Droite figures in the pages of Telos, an American journal of political theory. Most identitarians have a less scholarly bent. In 2002, a right-wing French insurrectionary, Maxime Brunerie, shot at President Jacques Chirac as he rode down the Champs-Élysées; the political group that Brunerie was affiliated with, Unité Radicale, became known as part of the identitaire movement. Copycat groups began emerging across Europe. In 2009, a Swedish former mining executive, Daniel Friberg, founded, in Denmark, the publishing house Arktos, which is now the world’s largest distributor of far- and alt-right literature. The son of highly educated, left-leaning parents, Friberg grew up in a wealthy suburb of Gothenburg. He embraced right-wing thought after attending a diverse high school, which he described as overrun with crime. In 2016, he told the Daily Beast, “I had been taught to think multiculturalism was great, until I experienced it.”

Few European nations have changed as drastically or as quickly as Sweden. Since 1960, it has added one and a half million immigrants to its population, which is currently just under ten million; a nationalist party, the Sweden Democrats, has become the country’s main opposition group. During this period, Friberg began to devour books on European identity—specifically, those of Benoist and Faye, whose key works impressed him as much as they impressed Richard Spencer. When Friberg launched Arktos, he acquired the rights to books by Benoist and Faye and had them translated into Swedish and English. Spencer told me that Arktos “was a very important development” in the international popularization of far-right identitarian thought.

Ils veulent lister les internautes ? ALors listons les artistes !

 

Je me suis amusée à rechercher les célébrités qui se sont prononcés pour ou contre Hadopi. Ici, la liste des partisans de la loi.

 

Cette liste est non exhaustive, et peut être sujette à caution (la pétition qui prétendait avoir recueilli 10 000 signatures d’artistes a été jugée controversée et n’est plus disponible sur le web aujourd’hui)

Pour mettre un terme à "une décennie de partage et de vol de fichiers musicaux", dont les victimes sont "les créateurs, et plus précisément les jeunes compositeurs débutants qui ne peuvent pas vivre des ventes de tickets de concerts et de t-shirts", le chanteur de U2 estime qu’il n’y a pas d’autre moyen que de renforcer le filtrage et la surveillance des réseaux. Évoquant les efforts mis en œuvre aux États-Unis pour lutter contre la pédopornographie comme "les pratiques ignobles de la Chine pour supprimer la dissidence en ligne", Bono en conclut qu’il est tout à fait possible de surveiller les contenus diffusés sur Internet.

Et le chanteur d’espérer que les magnats du cinéma réussiront "là où ceux de la musique ont échoué", en mobilisant les États-Unis pour secourir "l’économie la plus créative du monde".

Je déplore que des Cabrel, Goldman, Renaud et autres ne soient pas montés au créneau, comme Alain Corneau, par exemple. Je ne sais plus si c’est Corneau ou Jean-Claude Carrière qui, excédés par le qualificatif de « liberticide » à propos de cette loi, a utilisé l’image d’un poulailler libre avec des renards libres : libres de manger toutes les poules qu’ils veulent et quand il n’y a plus de poules, ils meurent eux-mêmes d’inanition"

À la fin de l’année, le chanteur revient sur sa décision, s’explique avoir été mal informé sur le peer to peer et « embobiné » par Virgin, et distribue gratuitement sa chanson militante Dans la jungle sur un forum internet d’un site de fans sans la permission de sa maison de disque. Il met d’ailleurs par la suite à disposition des enregistrements rares ou inédits sur ce même site. Cependant, en juin 2008 il s’engage, aux côtés de 51 autres artistes, pour la loi Hadopi réprimant le téléchargement illégal.

The rise of the internet and a new age of authoritarianism

“The Goliath of totalitarianism will be brought down by the David of the microchip,” Ronald Reagan said in 1989. He was speaking to a thousand British notables in London’s historic Guildhall, several months before the fall of the Berlin Wall. Reagan proclaimed that the world was on the precipice of “a new era in human history,” one that would bring “peace and freedom for all.” Communism was crumbling, just as fascism had before it. Liberal democracies would soon encircle the globe, thanks to the innovations of Silicon Valley. “I believe,” he said, “that more than armies, more than diplomacy, more than the best intentions of democratic nations, the communications revolution will be the greatest force for the advancement of human freedom the world has ever seen.”

At the time, most everyone thought Reagan was right. The twentieth century had been dominated by media that delivered the same material to millions of people at the same time—radio and newspapers, movies and television. These were the kinds of one-to-many, top-down mass media that Orwell’s Big Brother had used to stay in power. Now, however, Americans were catching sight of the internet. They believed that it would do what earlier media could not: it would allow people to speak for themselves, directly to one another, around the world. “True personalization is now upon us,” wrote MIT professor Nicholas Negroponte in his 1995 bestseller Being Digital. Corporations, industries, and even whole nations would soon be transformed as centralized authorities were demolished. Hierarchies would dissolve and peer-to-peer collaborations would take their place. “Like a force of nature,” wrote Negroponte, “the digital age cannot be denied or stopped.”

One of the deepest ironies of our current situation is that the modes of communication that enable today’s authoritarians were first dreamed up to defeat them. The same technologies that were meant to level the political playing field have brought troll farms and Russian bots to corrupt our elections. The same platforms of self-expression that we thought would let us empathize with one another and build a more harmonious society have been co-opted by figures such as Milo Yiannopoulos and, for that matter, Donald Trump, to turn white supremacy into a topic of dinner-­table conversation. And the same networked methods of organizing that so many thought would bring down malevolent states have not only failed to do so—think of the Arab Spring—but have instead empowered autocrats to more closely monitor protest and dissent.

If we’re going to resist the rise of despotism, we need to understand how this happened and why we didn’t see it coming. We especially need to grapple with the fact that today’s right wing has taken advantage of a decades-long liberal effort to decentralize our media. That effort began at the start of the Second World War, came down to us through the counterculture of the 1960s, and flourishes today in the high-tech hothouse of Silicon Valley. It is animated by a deep faith that when engineering replaces politics, the alienation of mass society and the threat of totalitarianism will melt away. As Trump fumes on Twitter, and Facebook posts are linked to genocide in Myanmar, we are beginning to see just how misplaced that faith has been. Even as they grant us the power to communicate with others around the globe, our social-­media networks have spawned a new form of authoritarianism.

Traversées de la Méditerranée : quand la jeunesse tunisienne, désespérée, se jette à la mer (4/4)

Depuis l’été 2018, de plus en plus d’embarcations partent de Tunisie pour traverser la mer Méditerranée. En face, l’Union européenne grince des dents. Pourtant, Tunis ne réagit pas, ou si peu. Déjà confronté à une crise économique et sociale majeure, le pays n’a pas - encore - fait de la crise migratoire une priorité. La Tunisie n’a toujours pas mis en place une politique nationale d’asile et il n’existe presqu’aucune structure d’aide pour les migrants. À l’instar des Africains subsahariens, la jeunesse tunisienne prend elle aussi - et de plus en plus souvent - le chemin de la mer pour atteindre l’Europe. Si la dictature a disparu, leurs espoirs d’une vie meilleure aussi.

Miloud n’a pas l’air contrarié quand il évoque le sujet. « C’est comme ça », dit-il, fataliste. « Il est pêcheur, il connaît la mer ». Miloud, un chauffeur de taxi de Zarzis, dans le sud-est de la Tunisie, n’a pas cherché à retenir son petit frère quand il a pris la mer, un matin en direction de l’Europe. La Méditerranée est pourtant pernicieuse, imprévisible, « mais pour les pécheurs de Zarzis, elle ne fait pas peur », affirme le trentenaire en souriant.

Depuis l’été 2018, de plus en plus de barques partent de Tunisie et de la région de #Zarzis, notamment, en direction de l’Italie. « Près de 50 canots en juillet et en août », affirme Chamseddine, un pêcheur de la région, assis à côté de Miloud, dans un café de la ville. Le projet paraît fou : sur ces minuscules canots à moteur, il faut naviguer plus de 20 heures avant d’atteindre les côtes siciliennes, « 25 heures, si le moteur n’est pas de bonne qualité », ajoute Miloud qui précise que son petit frère est arrivé sain et sauf en Italie. « Mais les jeunes ici n’ont peur de rien, ils n’ont pas peur de la mer ».

Contrairement aux départs depuis la Libye, seule une poignée des candidats à la traversée sont des Africains subsahariens. « L’écrasante majorité, 90% environ, sont des Tunisiens », affirme Ben Amor Romdhane, le chargé de communication du Forum tunisien pour les droits économiques et sociaux (FTDES), une association qui vient en aide aux migrants, notamment. Selon l’Organisation internationale des migrations (OIM), près 5 000 Tunisiens ont en effet atteint l’Italie depuis le début de l’année. Ils représentent aujourd’hui la principale nationalité des arrivées dans la péninsule.

Le profil de ces jeunes a souvent un même dénominateur commun : ils ont moins de 30 ans, et ils sont les premières victimes de la #crise_économique. Dans la région de Zarzis, écrasée par le soleil et le #chômage, Miloud, lui, fait un peu figure d’exception dans le paysage. « Je connais plein de Zarzisiens qui sont arrivés aujourd’hui en France, mais moi, mon activité de taxi marche bien. Je n’ai pas envie de traverser ».

La mer attire aussi les diplômés sans emploi et les #travailleurs_pauvres

Pour le FTDES, le gouvernement tunisien est en grande partie responsable de cette vague migratoire. Sept ans après la révolution, si la dictature a disparu, les espoirs d’une vie meilleure aussi.

« Il n’y a aucun message d’optimisme de la classe politique », affirme Ben Amor Romdhane. « Le sentiment, c’est que l’école ne sert à rien, elle ne donne que des chômeurs ». Et ce sentiment a contribué à grossir inlassablement les rangs des candidats au départ vers l’Europe. « Si vous regardez ces jeunes, vous verrez qu’il y a parmi eux des étudiants qui ne trouvent pas de travail, des travailleurs avec des salaires bas. Ce n’est plus seulement les personnes les plus pauvres qui traversent ».

Pour atteindre l’Europe, le petit frère de Miloud a embarqué avec 10 autres Tunisiens. Loin des grosses embarcations de plus de 100 personnes dont les médias ont diffusé d’innombrables clichés, les jeunes Tunisiens tentent, eux, la traversée sur des petits bateaux de 10 à 20 places. « Les passeurs achètent désormais des petits canots, avec des moteurs puissants. C’est plus discret et plus efficace », explique Ben Amor Romdhane.

Parfois aussi, les jeunes partent sans passeur et préparent leur voyage de manière autonome, sans intermédiaire. Ils se cotisent, expliquent Miloud et Chamseddine. Un canot neuf avec moteur coûte environ 13 000 dinars (4 000 euros). Si chaque participant apporte 1 000 dinars (300 euros) – « c’est cher mais possible » – le départ a de grandes chances de prendre forme.

De l’importance des #réseaux_sociaux

Le rôle des réseaux sociaux est fondamental dans les incitations aux départs : « Les jeunes filment les traversées, les tentatives, il y a des groupes Facebook, des échanges entre jeunes, des partages de vidéos, d’images, de conseils. Les premiers encouragent les autres à partir », précise encore Ben Amor Romdhane.

Combien de jeunes hommes et de jeunes femmes ont quitté les côtes tunisiennes depuis le début de l’année ? Difficile de savoir. Mais beaucoup atteignent les terres siciliennes, affirme Valentin Bonnefoy, un autre membre de l’association FTDES, coordinateur du département « Initiative pour une Justice Migratoire ». « Je pense que presqu’un Tunisien sur deux arrive en Italie sans se faire arrêter par les autorités italiennes. Nous recevons des témoignages en ce sens, des personnes qui ne sont pas interpellées, donc pas recensées dans les chiffres officiels ».

Des drames arrivent aussi. Le 7 octobre, un Tunisien de 23 ans s’est noyé lors d’un #naufrage au large de Djerba. Le trajet dans de telles conditions est dangereux, rappellent les pêcheurs zarzisiens. « Il ne suffit pas de savoir naviguer, il faut savoir rester immobile sans bouger pendant des heures, les canots sont parfois de très mauvaise qualité, si quelqu’un se lève, il peut se renverser », explique Chamseddine. Il y a aussi des risques d’incendie. « Pour atteindre l’Italie avec de si petites embarcations, il faut caler 30 bidons d’essence à l’intérieur. Pour l’instant, il n’y a pas eu d’accident. Mais imaginez si quelqu’un allume une cigarette trop près… », ajoute de son coté Salaheddine, un autre pêcheur de Zarzis qui a déjà vu une quinzaine d’embarcations prendre le large cet été.

Les appréhensions des pêcheurs de Zarzis

Face aux départs, les autorités apportent une réponse sécuritaire. La surveillance des côtes a été renforcée, un complexe sécuritaire a vu le jour sur l’île de Kerkennah (dans la province de Sfax, au sud du pays), d’où partent aussi de nombreuses embarcations. « Mais le fond du problème reste le même, aucune politique n’est mis en place pour retenir les jeunes », déplore Ben Amor Romdhane de FTDES. « Pour le gouvernement, la priorité, ce sont les élections [présidentielles et législatives] de 2019 ».

Les bateaux humanitaires, peu nombreux en mer, ne sont pas présents au large de la Tunisie pour secourir les éventuels naufragés. C’est souvent aux pêcheurs qu’incombe ce devoir malgré leurs craintes. « Nous apportons notre aide quand nous voyons des personnes en détresse, mais nous avons peur de la réaction des autorités », confesse Salaheddine. Depuis l’arrestation d’un de ses confrères, #Chamseddine_Bourassine, soupçonné d’être un passeur après avoir tracté une barque avec 14 migrants à bord en direction de Lampedusa, les pêcheurs de la région ont peur d’être assimilés à des trafiquants.

« Souvent, les jeunes en difficulté, dans les eaux internationales, nous supplie de ne pas les ramener en Tunisie », explique Salaheddine qui a déjà secouru deux petites embarcations l’année dernière. « Ils veulent aller en Italie », et ils savent que la zone de pêche des Zarzisiens n’est pas loin de l’île italienne de Lampedusa. « C’est vraiment triste. Parfois, ces jeunes Tunisiens veulent tellement atteindre l’Europe qu’ils menacent de se faire du mal si nous les ramenons en Tunisie », conclut-il. « Et pourtant, je ne peux pas les emmener en Italie. Je ne peux pas leur faire cette promesse-là et aucun pêcheur de la région ne le pourra ».

The former chief of the Petroleum Facilities Guard (PFG) Ibrahim Jodran and Moamar Gaddafi’s tribal loyalists as well as Chadian rebels have been teaming up for a new alliance to carry out a military operation to control not only the oil crescent region but also many more areas in the country, The New Arab reported, citing Ajdabiya military sources.

The commander of the self-styled army in eastern Libya Khalifa Haftar sent more troops to the oil crescent region and reports said Al-Saiqa Force’s units were seen moving toward the southwestern region, especially to Ghat, yet Al-Saiqa spokesman Miloud Al-Zway denied the reports.

“Jodran met with former Haftar’s forces leader in western Libyan district of Wershiffana, Omar Tantoush, and other military officers who are loyal to Gaddafi in order to form a brigade of Gaddafi loyalist from different tribes in southern Libya.” The New Arab reported.

Tantoush defected from Haftar’s so-called army months ago.

Quelques heures après des paroles apaisantes du ministre de l’intérieur britannique Sajid Javid à l’égard de la Russie, Dawn Sturgess, la femme britannique de 44 ans contaminée à l’agent neurotoxique Novitchok, est décédée dimanche 8 juillet au soir à l’hôpital de Salisbury (sud-ouest de Londres) où elle avait été admise huit jours plus tôt. Le décès de Dawn Sturgess, femme sans lien apparent avec la Russie et probable victime collatérale de la tension entre Moscou et Londres, a déclenché l’ouverture d’une enquête pour meurtre par Scotland Yard. Peu après l’annonce de la mort de cette mère de trois enfants, la première ministre Theresa May s’est déclarée « horrifiée et choquée ». « La police et les agents de sécurité travaillent pour établir les faits de manière urgente, a-t-elle ajouté. Le gouvernement apporte tout son soutien à la population locale, confrontée à cette tragédie. »

Dawn Sturgess, qui vivait dans un foyer pour sans-abri, était tombée subitement et gravement malade, vendredi 29 juin, après avoir, selon la police antiterroriste « manipulé un objet contaminé ». L’objet en question pourrait être une seringue ou un récipient qui contenait l’agent innervant utilisé le 4 mars contre l’agent double russe Sergueï #Skripal et sa fille Ioulia, également à Salisbury. La mère de famille avait été retrouvée inconsciente à Amesbury dans la maison de son compagnon Charlie Rowley, 45 ans, à une douzaine de kilomètres de Salisbury. Ce dernier, contaminé comme elle, restait dans un état critique lundi 9 juillet au matin.

Les experts du laboratoire spécialisé de Porton Down ont établi que le couple a été contaminé par le même type de Novitchok que celui utilisé contre les Skripal, sans pouvoir préciser si le poison provenait du même lot. Ce produit, conçu du temps de l’Union soviétique, agit sur le système nerveux. Il en existe plusieurs versions, dont aucune ne se décompose rapidement.

L’apparente guérison de Sergueï et Ioulia Skripal, qui sont sortis de l’hôpital de Salisbury après quelques semaines et sont maintenus dans un lieu tenu secret, avait apaisé les habitants de la région de Salisbury. Mais la mort de Dawn Sturgess et la possibilité que des échantillons de Novitchok se trouvent encore dans la nature risquent de raviver leurs doutes sur l’efficacité des vastes opérations de décontamination mises en œuvre par l’armée. Avant le décès de Mme Sturgess, les autorités laissaient entendre que ce nouvel épisode inattendu pouvait aboutir à des révélations sur le mode opératoire utilisé lors de l’empoisonnement des Skripal attribué par Londres à la Russie.

En visite à Salisbury dimanche pour rassurer les habitants, le ministre de l’intérieur Sajid Javid avait adopté un ton plus modéré à l’égard de Moscou, sommé dans un premier temps de s’expliquer sur ce deuxième double empoisonnement. Affirmant que le gouvernement britannique n’avait « aucun projet pour le moment » d’imposer de nouvelles sanctions à la Russie, il avait appelé à « ne pas tirer de conclusions hâtives » des événements de Salisbury.

Le président Zeman, connu pour ses positions pro-israéliennes, a redit mercredi soir qu’il voudrait voir l’ambassade de son pays transférée à Jérusalem.

Minutes before Palestinian-American activist Linda Sarsour took the stage at The New School’s Alvin Johnson Auditorium as part of a panel on anti-Semitism, one of the organizers went up to deliver a number of key instructions to audience members in case protesters would try to shut down the event.
But the fears that the event would be disrupted by right-wing protesters turned out to be for naught. Despite two weeks of a media frenzy, a petition signed by more than 21,000 people and loads of criticism from both left and right, the panel concluded with only two very minor interruptions.

“Apparently I am the biggest problem of the Jewish community? I am the existential threat, Apparently? I am confused, literally, every day,” said Sarsour, addressing the controversy that preceded the event.
Sarsour, a prominent advocate for Muslim Americans, criminal justice reform and civil rights, is the former executive director of the Arab American Association of New York and co-chaired last January’s National Women’s March. During the past year, particularly as her profile in progressive circles increased after the march, Sarsour has raised the ire of conservatives, Zionist activists and so-called alt-right figures who accuse her of supporting terrorists and promoting anti-Semitism – largely due to her support of the boycott, divestment and sanctions movement and her criticism of Israel.

“I am deeply honored and humbled to be here on this stage with people who have been some of the staunchest allies of the communities that I come from,” Sarsour said during the panel. “We cannot dismantle anti-Black racism, Islamophobia, homophobia, transphobia, every phobia and -ism without also dismantling anti-Semitism.”
“Intersectionality is not about black and white people organizing together or Jews and Muslims organizing together. It is all of us organizing at the intersections of oppression and seeing oppression [as] connected. Anti-Semitism is one branch on a larger tree of racism,” she added. “You can’t just address one branch, you need to address all branches together so we can get to the root of the problem.”

In her remarks, Sarsour spoke at length about her criticism of Zionism. “Just in case it’s not clear, I am unapologetically Palestinian-American and will always be unapologetically Palestinian-American. I am also unapologetically Muslim-American. And guess what? I am also a very staunch supporter of the BDS movement. What other way am I supposed to be, as a Palestinian-American who’s a daughter of immigrants who lived under military occupation and still has relatives in Palestine that live under military occupation? I should be expected to have the views that I hold,” she said.
Regardless of their feelings toward Israel, said Sarsour, Jews and non-Jews alike “must commit to dismantling anti-Semitism. The existential threat resides in the White House, and if what you’re reading all day long in the Jewish media is that Linda Sarsour and Minister [Louis] Farrakhan are the existential threats to the Jewish community, something really bad is going to happen and we are going to miss the mark on it.”

Apart from Sarsour, the panel also featured Rebecca Vilkomerson, the executive director of Jewish Voices for Peace, Leo Ferguson of Jews for Racial and Economic Justice and Lina Morales, a member of Jews of Color and Mizrahi/Sephardi Caucus of JVP. The event was moderated by journalist and author Amy Goodman, the host of the alternative news program “Democracy Now!”
The panel, organized by JVP, Haymarket Books, Jacobin magazine, Jews for Racial and Economic Justice and The New School’s Creative Publishing and Critical Journalism program, was preceded by great controversy over Sarsour’s participation. Jonathan Greenblatt, the CEO of the Anti-Defamation League, tweeted that “Having Linda Sarsour & head of JVP leading a panel on antisemitism is like Oscar Meyer leading a panel on vegetarianism.” Writing for Tablet Magazine, Phyllis Chesler, a New School alumni, wished that she could give back her diploma.
“Antisemitism is harmful and real. But when antisemitism is redefined as criticism of Israel, critics of Israeli policy become accused and targeted more than the growing far-right,” read the event’s description.
The other panelists were similarly critical of Israel and of the Jewish American community that rebukes activists like Sarsour yet embraces far-right figures like Steve Bannon and Sebastian Gorka. “I am angry at the profound hypocrisy of the institutional Jewish community, which has taught us that loving Israel does not mean that you love Jews,” said Vilkomerson. “Because I care about Jews, I am anti-Zionist,” said Morales. “Nothing can be more counterproductive or hurtful to Jews than to be intentionally confusing the issue of anti-Semitism by spreading false charges of anti-Semitism,” said Ferguson, in reference to the “smearing” of pro-Palestinian activists by Jewish-American organizations. Lobbing false accusations of anti-Semitism, he argued, “slowly erodes our ability to accurately assess threats.”
Two hours before the debate was scheduled to begin, over 15 policemen and security guards and multiple police cars were already surrounding the venue where it was to be held. A small protest took place across the street, with some demonstrators holding signs and chanting against Sarsour and JVP.
“This panel is spitting in the face of Jews – four anti-Semites talking about anti-Semitism,” Karen Lichtbraun, one of the demonstrators and head of the New York chapter of the Jewish Defense League told Haaretz. JVP, she charged, wanted to “drive a wedge between Jews” by inviting Sarsour. “[Sarsour] wants to bring Sharia law to America. She is brainwashing a lot of young Jews,” she claimed.
“Nobody has a monopoly on talking about anti-Semitism,” Rabbi Alissa Wise, deputy director of Jewish Voice for Peace and one of the event’s organizers, told Haaretz. “As a rabbi and a Jew, I feel safer in the world knowing that there are more people, non-Jewish allies, Muslims, Christians, people of no faith, who are taking up the question of anti-Semitism seriously.”
When asked about the commotion in the media that surrounded the event, Wise said: “There’s something particular about the role that Linda plays in the psyche of the American Jewish community. We’ve done these anti-Semitism events in Indianapolis, Chicago, the Bay Area, Philadelphia, and this is not the only one where a Muslim is speaking. Never before have we seen this kind of frenzy. It just seems like a witch hunt of sorts.”
Tuesday’s event was not the first time a planned appearance by Sarsour caused controversy: Her invitation to deliver the commencement address at the City University of New York School of Public Health in June raised the ire of pro-Israel activists. The uproar included a protest rally against her speech outside CUNY’s main office building, headed by far-right provocateur Milo Yiannopoulos, who called Sarsour a “Sharia-loving, terrorist-embracing, Jew-hating, ticking time bomb of progressive horror.”
“When I spoke at the CUNY graduate center back in June, something really disturbing happened,” said Sarsour during the panel. “I don’t care if people protest against me. What was confusing to me at that moment was, how is it that people that are Jewish are standing in a really against me with Milo Yiannopoulos, Richard Spencer, and Gavin McInnes? Why are they there with them? I hope the Jewish community stands up and says that’s wrong, that under no circumstance should Jewish people align with people like Milo or Pamela Geller or Richard Spencer or Gavin McInnes.”
When asked about her previous statement that feminism is “incompatible with Zionism,” Sarsour said: “I am not as important as I am made out to be. I am not the one that actually gets to say who gets to be in the movement and who doesn’t. Let’s stop talking about the civil rights movement that happened 50 years ago because there is a civil rights movement happening right now. We live under fascism, and we need all hands on deck.”

Last September, Patrik Hermansson, a 25-year-old graduate student from Sweden, went undercover in the world of the extreme right. Posing as a student writing a thesis about the suppression of right-wing speech, he traveled from London to New York to Charlottesville, Va. — and into the heart of a dangerous movement that is experiencing a profound rejuvenation.

Mr. Hermansson, who was sent undercover by the British anti-racist watchdog group Hope Not Hate, spent months insinuating himself into the alt-right, using his Swedish nationality (many neo-Nazis are obsessed with Sweden because of its “Nordic” heritage) as a way in. It wasn’t always easy. “You want to punch them in the face,” he told me of the people he met undercover. “You want to scream and do whatever — leave. But you can’t do any of those things. You have to sit and smile.”

What he learned while undercover is one part of a shocking, comprehensive new report from Hope Not Hate that sheds light on the strange landscape of the alt-right, the much discussed, little understood and largely anonymous far-right movement that exists mostly online and that has come to national attention in part because of its support for Donald Trump.

The extreme alt-right are benefiting immensely from the energy being produced by a more moderate — but still far-right — faction known as the “alt-light.”

The alt-light promotes a slightly softer set of messages. Its figures — such as Milo Yiannopoulos, Paul Joseph Watson and Mike Cernovich — generally frame their work as part of an effort to defend “the West” or “Western culture” against supposed left-liberal dominance, rather than making explicitly racist appeals. Many of them, in fact, have renounced explicit racism and anti-Semitism, though they will creep up to the line of explicitly racist speech, especially when Islam and immigration are concerned.

According to researchers, the key to hooking new recruits into any movement, and to getting them increasingly involved over time, is to simply give them activities to participate in. This often precedes any deep ideological commitment on the recruits’ part and, especially early on, is more about offering them a sense of meaning and community than anything else.

Intentionally or not, the far right has deftly applied these insights to the online world. Viewed through the filters of alt-light outlets like Breitbart and Prison Planet, or through Twitter feeds like Mr. Watson’s, the world is a horror show of crimes by migrants, leftist censorship and attacks on common sense. And the best, easiest way to fight back is through social media.

The newly initiated are offered many opportunities to participate directly. A teenager in a suburban basement can join a coordinated global effort to spread misinformation about Emmanuel Macron, France’s centrist president, in the hopes of helping far-right leader Marine Le Pen. Anyone who wants to do so can help spread the word about supposed mainstream media censorship of the Muslim “crime wave” the far right says is ravaging Europe.

These efforts — a click, a retweet, a YouTube comment — come to feel like important parts of an epochal struggle. The far right, once hemmed in by its own parochialism, has manufactured a worldwide online battlefield anyone with internet access can step into.

You probably have a good idea of who the so-called “alt-right” are: a group of white supremacists and nationalists, bound up by a fiery loathing of “political correctness,” “cultural Marxism,” and those pesky “social-justice warriors.” You might have also seen the articles that tell us to stop using that term and call them out for the fascist, neo-Nazis they are. In the wake of the “Unite the Right” protests in Charlottesville last weekend, these calls have only become more urgent. The phrase has become a catch-all for people like Richard Spencer, the head of the white supremacist National Policy Institute, and Milo Yiannopoulos, the online troll and provocateur who recently fell from mainstream conservative grace. But there’s a lot more people it catches in its (inter)net.
The alt-right isn’t one group. They don’t have one coherent identity. Rather, they’re a loose collection of people from disparate backgrounds who would never normally interact: bored teenagers, gamers, men’s rights activists, conspiracy theorists and, yes, white nationalists and neo-Nazis. But thanks to the internet, they’re beginning to form a cohesive group identity. And I have the data to prove it.
