More to the point, how can it be in the national interest of the United States to support one side in a recently concocted sectarian conflict? What benefit can come to the US from supporting an unwinnable Saudi-Emirati war on Yemen, the poorest Arab country? Does the United States really desire to increase the number of its enemies in the Middle East? Must Americans adopt the Israeli and Saudi Arabian position – convenient to both those countries – that Iran’s enmity to the US is intractable and immutable?

It is worth pointing out that before the Iranian revolution of 1979, the Sunni-Shia divide was a secondary one. Sunnis married Shia, and any number of other conflicts were more important. It is true that there were serious rivalries between Iran and its neighbors. But Iran under the Shah also supported countries in the Arabian Peninsula, such as Oman during the insurgency of the 1960s and 1970s and the royalist side during the Yemeni civil war in the same period.

Since 1979, this conflict has been envenomed by the expansion of the sectarian influence of the Islamic Republic, and by the counter-offensive spearheaded by Saudi Arabia, involving intolerant sectarian appeals, which in turn have contributed mightily to the growth of takfiri jihadi terrorism.

While the former is a problem for the United States and many countries of the region, in the US we hear endless sermons about the danger of the Shia sectarianism of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Meanwhile, there is a cone of silence over the manifest dangers of the Sunni sectarian bigotry which treats Shia as kuffar (unbelievers), mushrikin (idolaters), and rawafid (rejectors of Sunni orthodoxy), terms which imply not only that they are bad Muslims, but that this obliges believers to fight them to the death.

Perhaps after Trump has launched his so-called “Arab Nato”, someone with a clue about the region he is visiting and the real nature of its conflicts should bring to his attention these inconvenient facts that his hosts on the first two legs of his tour will be sure to conceal from him.

And if the president is too mesmerized by his enmity towards Iran, and by the hundreds of billions of dollars in arms sales that this junket has provided, perhaps the American people and their elected representatives might pay attention to them, before the US is dragged into yet another land war in Asia.

Une déclaration récemment publiée dans le New York Review of Books appelle à « un boycott économique et une non-reconnaissance politique des colonies israéliennes dans les territoires occupés » (Lettres, 13 octobre).

Nous saluons la façon dont la déclaration brise le tabou qui frappe le boycott des institutions israéliennes complices – au moins partiellement - des violations des droits humains des Palestiniens.

Défiant néanmoins le sens commun, la déclaration appelle à boycotter les colonies en laissant Israël, l’État qui a illégalement construit et entretenu ces colonies depuis des décennies, en dehors du coup.

De plus, les banques israéliennes non implantées dans les colonies mais qui financent leur construction ne devraient-elles pas être ciblées elles aussi ? C’est ce qu’ont fait l’Église Méthodiste Unie et l’important Fond de pension néerlandais PGGM.

En omettant les autres violations graves du droit international perpétrées par Israël, la déclaration ne satisfait pas au test de cohérence morale. Les réfugiés palestiniens, qui représentent la majorité des Palestiniens, n’ont-ils pas droit au respect des droits qui leur sont stipulés par l’ONU ? Les citoyens palestiniens d’Israël ne devraient-ils pas jouir de l’égalité des droits, par le rejet des dizaines de lois israéliennes qui les soumettent à la discrimination raciale ?

La société civile palestinienne a appelé au Boycott, au Désinvestissement et aux sanctions (BDS) contre toutes les entités, israéliennes ou internationales, qui se font complices de la négation des droits des Palestiniens où qu’ils soient. Comme l’a montré le boycott de l’apartheid sud africain, c’est le moyen non-violent le plus efficace pour atteindre la liberté, la justice et l’égalité pour tous.

... la réaction au militantisme de solidarité avec la Palestine aux USA a été bien plus qu’égale. Elle est massive, manipulée et payée par des milliardaires et par des dizaines d’organisations qui ont des budgets multi millionnaires, toutes engagées dans l’opposition au militantisme étudiant....

Tandis que certaines parties de la société américaine se fondent désormais davantage sur la vérité, rien n’a changé quant à la façon dont les élites US définissent les intérêts stratégiques de ce pays au Moyen Orient, et donc rien n’a changé sur le statu quo politique...

Le fait que l’administration Obama ait fourni plus de soutien à Israël que les précédentes n’a pas été suffisamment reconnu, et c’est largement dû à l’aversion virulente et viscérale à son égard en Israël, en partie motivée par le racisme déclaré, sans honte, qui caractérise le discours politique israélien. Il fut un temps où Israël était dirigé par de « bons libéraux » et des intellectuels qui, du moins au plan théorique, n’étaient pas des racistes déclarés. Maintenant, la nature discriminatoire de l’État n’est plus masquée, et c’est manifeste, par exemple, dans le traitement des Africains et dans le discours ouvertement raciste. Ils ne peuvent dissimuler leur mépris pour cet homme.

Les intérêts politiques américains et israéliens se rejoignent à un point qui n’est pas communément apprécié. Beaucoup d’hommes politiques israéliens, dont l’essentiel du gouvernement actuel, sont juste un appendice des fanatiques qui ont pris le contrôle du Parti Républicain. Adelson en est symptomatique : il est l’un des plus gros donateurs à l’aile droite des Républicains et à la droite israélienne. La droite israélienne au pouvoir et la droite américaine sont maintenant intimement liées. Les fanatiques et les démagogues racistes qui dominent le Parti Républicain sont en osmose avec les fanatiques et les racistes qui dominent la politique israélienne....

C’est un vaste thème mais, en bref, une chose que les responsables politiques américains et les milieux économiques ont commencé à réaliser, était que les trois principaux alliés des Américains dans la région – Israël, l’Arabie Saoudite et la Turquie – créent de graves problèmes pour la politique des USA même s’ils sont encore considérés comme des atouts. Pour ne prendre que le cas de l’Arabie Saoudite, les USA ont sponsorisé et soutenu le radicalisme takfiri wahabite, qui est le parrain du courant le plus virulent du fondamentalisme, via son soutien à l’Arabie Saoudite, et cela remonte au roi Faysal des années 1960 ; c‘est une vieille stratégie américaine.

Beaucoup de gens à Washington D.C. commencent à réaliser que ce n’est peut-être pas bon. Pour autant, leur capacité à faire quoi que ce soit là-dessus est limitée parce que les intérêts économiques les plus puissants ne peuvent pas se désintoxiquer de la richesse du pétrole du Golfe. Cela comprend l’industrie pétrolière, les secteurs bancaire et immobilier, l’aviation et l’industrie de la défense, etc. Ainsi, tandis que les décideurs politiques sont avertis des problèmes, quelques uns des intérêts les plus puissants de l’économie américaine sont complètement liés au statu quo dans le Golfe. Toutes sortes de problèmes sont causés par l’Arabie Saoudite, comme par Israël et par la Turquie : l’Iran paraît très différent sous cet éclairage. Les trois pays sont certes encore étroitement liés aux USA par des alliances et des intérêts stratégiques et matériels significatifs et, dans le cas d’Israël, par le tour de passe-passe discursif des sionistes aux États Unis.

Forty Columbia University faculty members have signed a petition urging the New York school to divest from companies that “supply, perpetuate, and profit from a system that has subjugated the Palestinian people.”
The petition was released Monday morning to mark the first day of Israel Apartheid Week, the Columbia Spectator reported.
According to the petition, the signatories “stand with Columbia University Apartheid Divest, Columbia Students for Justice in Palestine as well as with Jewish Voice for Peace in calling upon the University to take a moral stance against Israel’s violence in all its forms.”
They include Rashid Khalidi, a history and Middle Eastern studies professor who is a longtime critic of Israel and supporter of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement; Joseph Massad, a professor of modern Arab politics and intellectual history who sees Zionism as a racist and colonialist movement, and Nadia Abu El-Haj, an anthropology professor who received tenure in 2007 following a heated battle over the merits of her work, particularly a book that accuses Israel of manipulating archaeological findings to legitimize its existence.
The most heavily represented departments among the signers are Middle Eastern South Asian and Africa studies, or MESAAS, English and comparative literature, and anthropology.
Partha Chatterjee, an anthropology and MESAAS professor at the Ivy League school who signed, told the Spectator in an email that he wanted to protest Israel’s security regime, which “virtually amounts to apartheid.”
“I fully support every effort to put pressure on the Israeli government to end its illegal occupation of Palestinian lands,” he said.
Dirk Salomons, a signatory who is a senior lecturer at Columbia’s School of International and Public Affairs, told the Spectator, “I’ve always had a feeling as a Jew that a Jewish state should rise slightly above the lack of morality of its neighbors. It pains me to see how a country which I love and which I have visited many times can be so blind to the needs of its neighbors.”

Since its establishment, the Palestinian Authority has provided the main service demanded of it, viz providing security for Israel’s occupation and colonization regime, which has metastasized since 1993. It has gotten nothing in return in terms of the main Palestinian desiderata: independence and an end to the subjugation of military occupation and the land theft embodied in constantly expanding colonial settlements.

The international community, led by the United States, financially underwrites, diplomatically supports and arms to the teeth this indefensible system of oppression of the Palestinian people. It is time for all to stop hiding behind the fictions of a non-existent “peace process” and of the tattered Oslo accords, which Israel has never respected. Instead, it is incumbent on them to act immediately to end the longest occupation in modern history, which these accords have helped to prolong. This is not as hard as it seems: Israel could never act as it does on its own, without massive external support. That external support must be halted, and these unconscionable violations brought to an end.

Testing limits: Orthodox high school uninvites Palestinian-American scholar

NEW YORK CITY– The modern Orthodox Ramaz high school is the latest to join a growing list of venues where debate over the boundaries of acceptable discourse relating to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has led to major figures being uninvited from speaking engagements.

RamPo, the school’s student-led extra-curricular politics society, recently invited Rashid Khalidi, a well-known historian of the Middle-East, to give a talk. Shortly thereafter, school head Paul Shaviv rescinded the invitation, overruling the students.

Khalidi is the Edward Said Professor of Modern Arab Studies at Colombia University, and is the author of several major books concerning Palestinian national politics and identity.

In response to Shaviv’s action, RamPo started a petition calling on Shaviv “to realize how important academic equitability is to the Ramaz community and reverse his prohibition on Professor Khalidi’s address.” By late Friday, the petition had collected some 180 votes. Many appeared to be from outside supporters of open dialogue, including leaders of the Open Hillel movement and J Street U. Other signees included “Adolph Hitler” and “Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.”

The American-led “process” has ultimately strengthened the Israeli far right and made Palestinian self-determination more unattainable than ever. Continuing with the Orwellian grotesquerie that is the “peace process” is contrary to any enlightened definition of American self-interest. Eighty-one members of the House of Representatives have just completed a trip to Israel, all expenses paid by an American Israel Public Affairs Committee offshoot, the American Israel Education Foundation. Even by the usually craven standards of Congress, which applauds any and all Israeli actions, this particular junket featured an unusually high number of participants. And it’s at a time when domestic considerations, such as the crumbling economy, are surely worthy of the undivided attention of our elected representatives.

Among the 81 who went on this “Magical Mystery Tour” was Illinois Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. While there, the Democratic congressman met with Israeli and Palestinian leaders but clearly deemed it unnecessary to undertake any real fact-finding, choosing instead to stick to the scripted tours laid out by lobbyists for Israel.
