    In a frankly comical interview with the Daily Telegraph two years ago, [netanyahu] complained about the British today, who look at Israel through their “colonial prism” and thus “see us as neo-colonialists.” But “we are not Brits in India!” he exclaims. Still, Netanyahu retains one great British hero: he has a portrait of Winston Churchill in his room, and posed beside it for the Telegraph photographer. It evidently did not occur to the interviewer to ask Netanyahu whether he was under the impression that Churchill condemned colonialism, or was ashamed of the Raj.

    It is quite true that Churchill was a romantic supporter of Zionism, and in 1937 he met Jabotinsky. Their cordial discussions influenced what Churchill said and wrote about Palestine immediately afterward. Churchill had already stated in very plain terms that he saw nothing wrong in the Jewish settlers’ supplanting the Arabs, along the lines of an earlier pattern. “I do not admit,” he said,

    that a great wrong has been done to the Red Indians of America, or the black people of Australia. I do not admit that a wrong has been done to these people by the fact that a stronger race, a higher grade race, or, at any rate, a more worldly-wise race, to put it that way, has come in and taken their place.

    The new history of capitalism is less a movement than what proponents call a “cohort”: a loosely linked group of scholars who came of age after the end of the cold war cleared some ideological ground, inspired by work that came before but unbeholden to the questions — like, why didn’t socialism take root in America? — that animated previous generations of labor historians.

    Instead of searching for working-class radicalism, they looked at office clerks and entrepreneurs.

    “Earlier, a lot of these topics would’ve been greeted with a yawn,” said Stephen Mihm, an associate professor of history at the University of Georgia and the author of “A Nation of Counterfeiters: Capitalists, Con Men and the Making of the United States.” “But then the crisis hit, and people started asking, ‘Oh my God, what has Wall Street been doing for the last 100 years?’ ”

    In 1996, when the Harvard historian Sven Beckert proposed an undergraduate seminar called the History of American Capitalism — the first of its kind, he believes — colleagues were skeptical. “They thought no one would be interested,” he said.

    But the seminar drew nearly 100 applicants for 15 spots and grew into one of the biggest lecture courses at Harvard, which in 2008 created a full-fledged Program on the Study of U.S. Capitalism. That initiative led to similar ones on other campuses, as courses and programs at Princeton, Brown, Georgia, the New School, the University of Wisconsin and elsewhere also began drawing crowds — sometimes with the help of canny brand management.

    After Seth Rockman, an associate professor of history at Brown, changed the name of his course from Capitalism, Slavery and the Economy of Early America to simply Capitalism, students concentrating in economics and international relations started showing up alongside the student labor activists and development studies people.

    “It’s become a space where you can bring together segments of the university that are not always in conversation,” Dr. Rockman said. (Next fall the course will become Brown’s introductory American history survey.)

    While most scholars in the field reject the purely oppositional stance of earlier Marxist history, they also take a distinctly critical view of neoclassical economics, with its tidy mathematical models and crisp axioms about rational actors.

    Markets and financial institutions “were created by people making particular choices at particular historical moments,” said Julia Ott, an assistant professor in the history of capitalism at the New School (the first person, several scholars said, to be hired under such a title).

    To dramatize that point, Dr. Ott has students in her course Whose Street? Wall Street! dress up in 19th-century costume and re-enact a primal scene in financial history: the early days of the Chicago Board of Trade.

    Some of her colleagues take a similarly playful approach. To promote a two-week history of capitalism “boot camp” to be inaugurated this summer at Cornell, Dr. Hyman (a former consultant at McKinsey & Company) designed “history of capitalism” T-shirts.

    The camp, he explained, is aimed at getting relatively innumerate historians up to speed on the kinds of financial data and documents found in business archives. Understanding capitalism, Dr. Hyman said, requires “both Foucault and regressions.”

    It also, scholars insist, requires keeping race and gender in the picture.

    As examples, they point to books like Nathan Connolly’s “World More Concrete: Real Estate and the Remaking of Jim Crow South Florida,” coming next year, and Bethany Moreton’s “To Serve God and Wal-Mart: The Making of Christian Free Enterprise” (Harvard, 2009), winner of multiple prizes, which examines the role of evangelical Christian values in mobilizing the company’s largely female work force.

    The history of capitalism has also benefited from a surge of new, economically minded scholarship on slavery, with scholars increasingly arguing that Northern factories and Southern plantations were not opposing economic systems, as the old narrative has it, but deeply entwined.

    And that entwining, some argue, involved people far beyond the plantations and factories themselves, thanks to financial shenanigans that resonate in our own time.

    In a paper called “Toxic Debt, Liar Loans and Securitized Human Beings: The Panic of 1837 and the Fate of Slavery,” Edward Baptist, a historian at Cornell, looked at the way small investors across America and Europe snapped up exotic financial instruments based on slave holdings, much as people over the past decade went wild for mortgage-backed securities and collateralized debt obligations — with a similarly disastrous outcome.

    Other scholars track companies and commodities across national borders. Dr. Beckert’s “Empire of Cotton,” to be published by Alfred A. Knopf, traces the rise of global capitalism over the past 350 years through one crop. Nan Enstad’s book in progress, “The Jim Crow Cigarette: Following Tobacco Road From North Carolina to China and Back,” examines how Southern tobacco workers, and Southern racial ideology, helped build the Chinese cigarette industry in the early 20th century.

    1. The unprovoked and illegal invasion of Iraq by the United States is an event that will live in infamy. The political criminals in Washington who have launched this war, and the wretched scoundrels in the mass media who are reveling in the bloodbath, have covered this country in shame. Hundreds of millions of people in every part of the world are repulsed by the spectacle of a brutal and unrestrained military power pulverizing a small and defenseless country. The invasion of Iraq is an imperialist war in the classic sense of the term: a vile act of aggression that has been undertaken on behalf of the interests of the most reactionary and predatory sections of the financial and corporate oligarchy in the United States. Its overt and immediate purpose is the establishment of control over Iraq’s vast oil resources and reduction of that long-oppressed country to an American colonial protectorate.

    All these abrupt turnabouts, confusion among the top leadership, and mass frustrations with the slow pace of paybacks for revolting and overthrowing the old regime, have not helped to stabilise the situation. If anything, the introduction of free electoral politics has given extremists the new possibility of expressing themselves and attempting to enforce new moral standards. Yet, the more unstable the situation, the more Tunisian civil society will turn against the present government and will look for alternative leadership. After all, the population has overcome its fear of those in power, have found a new dignity in collective action, and have asserted its right to express itself freely. In the shadows stands the transitional leader, the octogenarian Béji Caïd el Sebsi, who has attempted to patch together a wide coalition of old Bourguibists, and former members of Ben Ali’s party, the RCD, who held minor positions but who know how to organise a state. If he fails to marshal an electoral coalition, there are others on the sideline willing to jump into the fray and establish a third way. There are many middle class property owners in the country who want nothing more than stability and a chance to reinvigorate the economy so that they once again can enrich themselves.11 They might just be successful in the next elections and we might see the beginnings of more orderly transition to a new Tunisia. The country has many talented people who know how to get things done. They are waiting for their talents to be marshalled and be put to work.12 Whatever happens, we have to remember that the post-revolt transition will be rocky and filled with surprises. After having watched Tunisian developments for more than half a century, I am convinced that the Tunisians will sort out their problems and re-establish a working state. But it will take time to accomplish.13

    A Horse Named Reckless

    Reckless was a pack horse during the Korean war, and she carried recoil-less rifle ammunition and supplies to Marines. Nothing too unusual about that, lots of animals got pressed into doing pack chores in many wars.

    But this horse did something more…. during the battle for a location called Outpost Vegas, this mare made 50 trips up and down the hill, on the way up she carried ammunition, and on the way down she carried wounded soldiers…

    What was so amazing?

    Well she made every one of those trips through enemy fire and without anyone leading her. Here’s her story and photos to prove where she was and what she did.

    A radio station in the UK has been fined £4,000 after one of its presenters said that gay people are ‘evil’ and should be beaten and tortured.

    ‘Sister Ruby,’ whose real name is Rubina Nasir, made the comments in August 2011 on Fever 107.3, a station serving South Asian communities in Leeds.

    According to Digital Spy, Nasir said: ‘What should be done if they do it? [practice homosexuality]. If there are two such persons among you, that do this evil, the shameful act, what do you have to do? Torture them; punish them; beat them and give them mental torture.’

    She added: ‘Allah states, ‘If they do such a deed [I.e. Homosexuality], punish them, both physically and mentally. Mental punishment means rebuke them, beat them, humiliate them, admonish and curse them, beat them up. This command was sent in the beginning because capital punishment had not yet been sent down.’

    Ofcom, the independent regulator and competition authority for the UK communications industries, levied the fine after receiving complaints from listeners.

    It said Nasir’s statements were ‘likely to encourage or incite the commission of crime.’

    The student’s mother is suing Maine West High School in Des Plaines, Illinois, claiming that the coaches sanctioned the sexual assault of her son and at least two other boys in September, during school hours.

    The furious parent appeared in a dramatic press conference on Monday wearing sunglasses and a baseball cap pulled low across her face to hide her identity and protect the anonymity of her child.

    ‘I thought my son would be safe at school,’ she said, her voice quivering. ‘You think when you drop off your son, it’s a safe place to be. But I feel like the coaches should have kept him safe on the soccer field, and they didn’t do that.’

    Her lawyer, Antonio Romanucci, says the high school freshman was attacked on September 27 on school property when he and two other boys were promoted to the varsity soccer team, according to ABC7 TV in Chicago.

    He claims that the teens were shoved to the ground and beaten by the older members of the varsity team. The players then held them down, pulled down their pants, tore off their underwear and sodomized each of them.

    The coaches supported the hazing ritual, Mr Romanucci says, by ordering a ‘campus run’ after the three freshman made the senior team, the Daily Herald reports.

    A Des Plaines police investigation of the incident led to six students being sent to juvenile court to face hazing charges.

    The school district said it has disciplined ten students.

    Two coaches who are also teachers at the high school, head coach Mike Divincenzo and varsity coach Emilo Rodriguez, have been transferred with pay, pending the outcome of a school district investigation.

    Three other coaches have been fired.

    Mr Romanucci, the attorney who filed the lawsuit on behalf of the student and his parents, said the hazing practice has taken place at the school for the last four years.

    ‘That behavior, in today’s society, is disgusting,’ he said. ‘It should never be condoned. It should never have happened.’

    A client called in inquiring about a package to Hawaii. After going over all the cost info, she asked, “Would it be cheaper to fly to California and then take the train to Hawaii?”

    I got a call from a woman who wanted to go to Capetown. I started to explain the length of the flight and the passport information when she interrupted me with “I’m not trying to make you look stupid, but Capetown is in Massachusetts. “Without trying to make her look like the stupid one, I calmly explained, “Capecod is in Massachusetts, Capetown is in Africa.” Her response … click.

    A man called, furious about a Florida package we did. I asked what was wrong with the vacation in Orlando. He said he was expecting an ocean-view room. I tried to explain that is not possible, since Orlando is in the middle of the state. He replied, “Don’t lie to me. I looked on the map and Florida is a very thin state.”

    I got a call from a man who asked, “Is it possible to see England from Canada?” I said, “No.” He said “But they look so close on the map.”

    Another man called and asked if he could rent a car in Dallas. When I pulled up the reservation, I noticed he had a 1-hour lay over in Dallas. When I asked him why he wanted to rent a car, he said, “I heard Dallas was a big airport, and I need a car to drive between the gates to save time.”

    A nice lady just called. She needed to know how it was possible that her flight from Detroit left at 8:20am and got into Chicago at 8:33am. I tried to explain that Michigan was an hour ahead of llinois, but she could not understand the concept of time zones. Finally I told her the plane went very fast, and she bought that!

    A woman called and asked, “Do airlines put your physical description on your bag so they know who’s luggage belongs to who?” I said, “No, why do you ask?” She replied, “Well, when I checked in with the airline, they put a tag on my luggage that said FAT, and I’m overweight, is there any connection?” After putting her on hold for a minute while I “looked into it” (I was actually laughing) I came back and explained the city code for Fresno is FAT, and that the airline was just putting a destination tag on her luggage.

    I just got off the phone with a man who asked, “How do I know which plane to get on?” I asked him what exactly he meant, which he replied, “I was told my flight number is 823, but none of these darn planes have numbers on them.”

    A woman called and said, “I need to fly to Pepsi-cola on one of those computer planes.” I asked if she meant to fly to Pensacola on a commuter plane. She said, “Yeah, whatever.”

    A businessman called and had a question about the documents he needed in order to fly to China. After a lengthy discussion about passports, I reminded him he needed a visa. “Oh no I don’t, I’ve been to China many times and never had to have one of those.” I double checked and sure enough, his stay required a visa. When I told him this he said, “Look, I’ve been to China four times and every time they have accepted my American Express.”

    A woman called to make reservations, “I want to go from Chicago to Hippopotamus, New York” The agent was at a loss for words. Finally, the agent: “Are you sure that’s the name of the town?” “Yes, what flights do you have?” replied the customer. After some searching, the agent came back with, “I’m sorry, ma’am, I’ve looked up every airport code in the country and can’t find a Hippopotamus anywhere.” The customer retorted, “Oh don’t be silly. Everyone knows where it is. Check your map!” The agent scoured a map of the state of New York and finally offered, “You don’t mean Buffalo, do you?” “That’s it! I knew it was a big animal!”

    Christian councilor Christina Summers lost her appeal after she was kicked out of Brighton’s Green Party for voting against same-sex marriage.

    An anti-gay marriage Christian councilor has had her expulsion upheld from the far-left Green Party in Brighton.

    Christina Summers was kicked out by party officials in the seaside city after voting against the UK government plans to allow gay couples to marry.

    The Green Party has now upheld the expulsion after the councilor, now an Independent, appealed against the decision.

    In a council debate in July, she said: ‘When you touch marriage, you’re touching family and you’re hitting at the very heart of God and I have an enormous problem with that.’

    By disciplining her, Summers said the Green Party is discriminating against Christians – an allegation the party denies.

    An inquiry panel recommended her expulsion after concluding she would be in breach of party policy.

    This stated if she was selected as a candidate and elected to public office, she would not uphold and advance the values of ‘equality for all people, regardless of race, color, gender, sexual orientation, religion, social origin or any other prejudice.’

    Following the decision, Summers said the Green Party was discriminating against Christians, but the party said it defended free speech and freedom of beliefs.

    ‘It’s a typical symptom of prejudice, blatant prejudice,’ she told the BBC.

    ‘It raises the big question – can Christians serve in the public realm? They are saying don’t bring your faith into politics.’

    A Green Party spokesman said: ‘This appeal panel has upheld none of her points of appeal and has therefore dismissed the appeal itself.’

    Despite the party saying the decision represented the end of the appeals process; Summers said the fight was not over.

    In a statement through the Christian Legal Centre, she said: ‘I am terribly disappointed at the appeal panel’s decision, not just for myself but for others who share my views on marriage and on free speech.’

    NOM’s Robert George “OK” With Beating-the-Gay Out of Young LGBTers

    The notorious gay-bashing bigot Pastor Ken Hutcherson is in league with NOM in Washington State, spreading anti-gay lies, attempting to strip gay human beings of rights, and inciting to anti-gay violence.

    Hutcherson recently told KCTS television that just as two parents with belts can beat the criminal gene out of their offspring, “discipline . . . Removes the gay gene.”

    For a pastor to promote domestic violence is horrifying. When you consider how hard some people work trying to stop domestic violence, and to attempt against the odds somehow to restore the shattered lives of the victims, many of whom suffer from severe Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, it is surreal that a hate-mongering pastor would, on television, promote domestic violence.

    Hutcherson smiles like the smug bigot he is when he is prescribing anti-gay domestic violence. But consider this; In 2005, the three-year-old Ronnie Paris, Jr.’s father beat him to death because he believed he was going to turn out gay.

    Domestic violence anti-gay murder is only one negative possible result of NOM’s associate Hutcherson’s public promotion of domestic violence against gay family members.

    Do not fail to notice the sheer obnoxious idiocy of Hutcherson’s reasoning. In the interview — (his segment begins at about the 37 minute mark) — Hutcherson first says that there is no proof that gay people are born gay, but then he instructs parents to remove “the gay gene” by beating homosexual offspring with belts.

    Domestic violence is not acceptable. Beating a gay person does not remove “the gay gene” from them, as Hutcherson fraudulently and hatefully alleges.

    And, of course, when school-age anti-gay bullies hear an adult saying that it is possible to beat “the gay gene” out of somebody, those anti-gay bullies are motivated to carry out violent attacks against students actually gay and/or perceived to be gay.

    I spoke with Ken Hutcherson for this article. He started by alleging that the TV interview had been spliced, to make it appear he was saying things he had not actually said. However, in alleging that, he was being duplicitous. The grotesque anti-gay bigot is so blinded by his gay-bashing ignorance, that he is not even able to understand how ignorant he is. He plainly feels fully justified in his bullying non-acceptance of gay human beings. He re-iterated his statements made in the TV interview, likening criminals and gay people. I attempted to get a clear statement from him that he does not advocate violence against gay people. At one point, he said “You can talk with any of my children. They may have gotten little raps from a belt, but they were never beaten; it was just to keep them in line. Now, that does not mean that they can not choose for themselves. If they want to choose the homosexual lifestyle, they can do that, they can choose unbiblically, but they will not be welcome in our house, because we do not accept sin in our home.” I then explained to Hutcherson that he was reinforcing, not lessening the impression that he thought that threats of violence, and/or actual violence against gay people are acceptable. I told him that it is psychological violence for a parent to reject a gay child, and that to intensify the psychological anti-gay violence with physical violence is barbaric. I told him that such brutal parental rejections explain disproportionate homelessness among gay youth. Hutcherson then launched into a ludicrous off-topic diatribe about how he has gay friends, and how no church in the country has as many people who have “left the homosexual lifestyle” as his. I told him that I had heard quite enough. I had received confirmation that he does indeed think that you can and should hit a gay child with a belt, and that by hitting the child with a belt, to reinforce the psychological aspects of anti-gay domestic violence, the child won’t be gay.

    This sadistic bigot is a monster and a pig, promoting anti-gay domestic violence. He meant exactly what he said during the television interview; nobody had spliced his gay-bashing meaning into it. Let us spell out, for clarification, what a gay child in Hutcherson’s house would experience. The sexual minority child would understand that the parents considered him to be a “sinner” and like a criminal, because of the way in which s/he was different. The child would understand that any evidence that they were a member of a sexual minority could and indeed, would result in psychological and then physical violence, and that if the physical violence did not prevent them from somehow again manifesting that they were a member of a sexual minority, they would be tossed out of the house, no matter their age or ability to survive, to have housing and food. An eventual gay child in the Hutcherson house would be forced to try to survive in a reign of domestic terror, with a bullying, tyrannical theocrat father alleging celestial authority for keeping the child living in that state of fear, only because s/he was a sexual minority. As with all forms of domestic violence, anti-gay domestic violence is not love; it is a crime. An abuser’s justifications — (God said I should psychologically and physically abuse my lesbian daughter) — and victim blaming (You as a lesbian are like a criminal, therefore, you deserve for your father to abuse you) — while characteristic of abusers, are in themselves, part and parcel of the abuse, and never valid.

    Because the National Organization for Marriage is collaborating with Hutcherson in Washington State, and frequently posts his gay-bashing statements approvingly on NOM’s blog, NOM, if it will not condemn his calls for domestic violence against LGBTers, is complicit in those calls for domestic violence.

    I requested comment from NOM’s Founder, Chairman Emeritus, and mastermind the Princeton Professor Robert George. I received no reply. The e-mail was copied to NOM’s Maggie Gallagher, Brian Brown and John Eastman. Additionally, it was copied to Princeton President Shirley M. Tilghman, who permits George to publish gay-bashing lies with the Princeton name attached, even though doing so violates Princeton’s Code of Conduct.

    It is crucial to understand that, definitively; 1) the gay-bashing religious right, and 2) the Republican establishment are inseparable powers.

    Romney signed Robert George’s NOM’s anti-gay pledge. George wrote a Supreme Court brief saying that gays should be thrown in jail for their intimacy. George also is on the Board of the Family Research Council, an SPLC-certified anti-gay hate group. When a congressman proposed a resolution against the “Kill the gays” law in Uganda, Robert George’s FRC spent $25,000 lobbying against the resolution, on the grounds it constituted “pro-homosexual promotion.” NOM sponsors anti-gay hate rallies, where NOM-approved speakers tell mobs that homosexuals are “worthy to death.” George’s NOM is pushing a Starbucks boycott in the Middle East, fanning hostilities against gay human beings there with no regard for their safety.

    So it is hardly surprising that NOM’s Robert George will not denounce Pastor Ken Hutcherson for promoting anti-gay domestic violence.

    But it should be out there — as a topic of consideration — that NOM’s Robert George is OK with, not just praying away the gay, but additionally, with beating away the gay. If George wants to clarify his position on anti-gay domestic violence, he knows how he can e-mail this reporter.

    John Boehner recently appointed NOM’s Robert George to the US Commission on International Religious Freedom. I interpret that appointment as Boehner’s signal of intent to expedite the NOM pledge, should Romney win, and to devastate LGBT rights worldwide. On Bush’s watch, in 2007, Hutcherson attended an anti-gay-rights conference in Latvia.

    No child deserves to be beaten — by their own parents — because they are gay. Hutcherson is making a direct incitement to anti-gay violence. In his hateful fatuousness, he says that he was born black, but gay people were not born gay. What he might consider, is that black people have been beaten only because they were black, and he now is instructing parents to beat their children only because they are gay. What Hutcherson is saying is a lie. No matter how much a parent might beat a gay child, their gay child will still be gay. The gay child, beaten, might live in fear, and never talk about the reality of their orientation; but a gay child absolutely can not be made heterosexual through a beating.It is not OK for parents to beat gay children.

    It is not OK for Romney and Boehner to be politically and materially supporting an anti-gay movement whose leader, Robert George, is directly allied with a major, appallingly ignorant anti-gay bigot who promotes anti-gay domestic violence.

    Israeli Justice Endorses Continued Abuse of Dirar Abusisi

    Israeli Mossad agents collaborating with Ukrainian authorities kidnapped Gaza civil engineer Dirar Abusisi on a Ukrainian train nearly two years ago. He was spirited to a Kiev apartment and by some accounts drugged and shipped in a coffin to Israel. There he was imprisoned under sham charges that he was Hamas’ chief “rocket engineer.” He has languished in solitary confinement without trial during that period.

    Over the past months, his Israeli attorney, Tal Linoy has appealed to the Supreme Court demanding the right to see all evidence the State has against his client. He has also appealed his isolation from other Palestinian detainees, which is a punitive response to his refusal to agree to a State offer plea bargain which would force him to admit guilt and confine him to prison for a ten-year sentence.

    The Israeli regional court last month, approved a six month extension of his prison isolation (the third such extension granted) on the grounds that the State’s evidence, which the defense was denied access to, marked the prisoner as someone who poses a danger to the State. It argued that releasing him into the general prison population would endanger state security, an argument patently fraudulent on its face. Will he use his special engineering skills to build hand-made missiles that will be smuggled from prison on Hamas’ behalf? Or perhaps he’ll build an explosive device that will destroy the prison and allow a mass prison break?

    There are those who seek to argue that the Israeli judiciary exists to maintain the rule of law and correct injustices done. Clearly, this claim is unfounded. Israeli justice exists to ratify the worst excesses of the national security state. Keep in mind that what evidence the State has offered has been thoroughly discredited by this blog, a BBC documentary, and an investigative report published in a Kiev newspaper.

    All this comes in the midst of an agreement Israel signed with its Palestinian political prisoners which granted them family visits and prohibited the State from placing them in solitary confinement. This agreement applied to everyone…including Abusisi. Yet now the State chooses to ignore this fact and pretend the agreement doesn’t exist. So far, the Israeli justice system refuses to intervene and uphold the agreement.

    The detainee suffers from painful kidney stones, dangerously high blood pressure, anemia, and other serious ailments. A year before his detention he suffered a serious heart attack. The Israeli prison service has refused to allow him to be treated by medical specialists and confined him to taking aspirin. Even the service’s psychiatrist has conceded he is suffering from severe depression, a fact which the Shin Bet denied before the judge. A specialist appointed by the defense, after examining the prisoner, found that his medical treatment fell below standards demanded by Israeli law.

    In any real democracy where there was rule of law, Abusisi could appeal his treatment and demand release. In Israel, even with its vaunted Supreme Court which supposedly upholds society’s democratic values, Abusisi receives little consideration.

    Gaza media note that the Hamas minister for prisoners has appealed to Egypt to adopt Abusisi’s plight and gain his release. Tal Linoy tells me that this appeal is a cynical ploy on the part of Hamas, which has essentially abandoned Abusisi to his fate. The reasons for this are complicated, but were alluded to in Gabriel Gatehouse’s BBC documentary in which a Hamas representative essentially offered Abusisi a cold kiss-off. Hamas’ refusal to support him is evidence alone of the falsity of the Israeli government claims that Abusisi played any role on behalf of the Islamist group. Can you imagine why, for example, in the agreement to release 1,000 Palestinian prisoners in return for Gilad Shalit, Hamas refused to include Abusisi among those it sought to release?

    I speculate that Abusisi had been approached while still in Gaza to join Hamas and collaborate with it (he was deputy director of the local power plant at the time). When he refused, he fled Gaza to the Ukraine. To get revenge, Hamas conveyed false information to the Mossad that Abusisi knew the location of Gilad Shalit, who at the time remained imprisoned in Gaza. Thinking they had a sure-fire way to locate Shalit and gain his freedom, they arranged for his kidnapping in Ukraine and forced return to Israel.

    When they discovered that they’d been “had” by Hamas, the Shin Bet could not quietly let the matter drop. Saving face is a critical factor not just in “primitive” Arab culture (as Israelis are wont to claim), but in Israel’s national security state as well. The secret police do not generally admit mistakes unless compelled to do so. In this case, the only ones who know the truth aren’t in a position to threaten the prerogatives of those who made this blunder. So Abusisi languishes for years in an Israeli dungeon, abandoned by Israeli justice and by the rulers of his native Gaza who he “betrayed” by refusing to serve them.

    Dirar Abusisi is a hero, a proud man who refuses to serve two masters, ones in Gaza and now those in Israel. He will not bend. This is the greatest crime he has committed. He has offended the security services, denied their supremacy, and defied them. In the national security state this is a supreme offense. He may suffer permanent damage to his health. He may not see his six children and wife Veronica for many years. But for him honor and dignity are supreme values. He puts his Israeli torturers and tormentors to shame. He puts the Israeli justice system to shame. He puts all those who betrayed him to shame.

    Voting machines tied to the Romneys could decide the election in Ohio.

    Could a voting machine company with deep financial ties to the Romney family help Republicans steal the presidential election in Ohio?

    A 2007 study conducted by Ohio’s Secretary of State showed that Hart Intercivic’s touch screen voting machines could be easily corrupted. The New York Times reported:

    At polling stations, teams working on the study were able to pick locks to access memory cards and use hand-held devices to plug false vote counts into machines. At boards of election, they were able to introduce malignant software into servers.1

    Hart Intercivic is majority owned by H.I.G. Capital which controls two of the five seats on the Hart Intercivic board. An investment fund with deep ties to the Romney family and the Mitt Romney for president campaign, H.I.G. Capital was founded by Tony Tamer, a major bundler for the Romney campaign, and it is one of the largest partners of Solamere Capital, an investment fund founded by Tagg Romney and Spencer Zwick, Mitt Romney’s chief fundraiser from the 2008 presidential campaign.2 This makes the Romney family part owner of the voting machine company, through its interest in H.I.G. Capital.

    What’s more, three other H.I.G. Capital directors are major fundraisers for the Romney campaign, and H.I.G. Capital is the 11th largest contributor to the Mitt Romney campaign.3 Two of the company’s directors, Douglas Berman and Brian Schwartz, were even in attendance at the Boca Raton fundraiser4 where Romney infamously declared:

    There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what… who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it… These are people who pay no income tax…[M]y job is is not to worry about those people. I’ll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives.5

    And as if the ties between Tagg Romney’s Solamere, Romney contributors at H.I.G. Capital, and Hart Intercivic weren’t astonishing enough, two members of Hart Intercivic’s 5-member board of directors made direct contributions to the Romney campaign. That’s right. Directors of the company that makes touchscreen voting machines that could decide the presidential election in Ohio, have made contributions to the Mitt Romney for President campaign.

    It is disturbing and dangerous that Hart Intercivic, the company that makes the machines that will count many of the votes in Ohio on election night has deep financial ties to family members of Mitt Romney. And that its leadership has been actively involved presidential campaign by donating and bundling hundreds of thousands of dollars to the Mitt Romney. The fact that these machines are easily corruptible touch screen voting machines makes matters even worse.

    Gov. Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama are locked in a tight election race which could very well be decided by Ohio’s 18 electoral votes. We must take action now.

    Liberia Christians say God wants gay sex to stay illegal
    Liberian Church and Inter-Religious Council has joined forces to stop the senate from repealing anti-gay laws

    President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf’s spokesman has said she will veto any homosexuality bill that comes across her desk, but that isn’t stopping campaiging Liberian Christians.
    Extremist Christian groups are campaigning against the legalization of gay sex in the Western African country of Liberia.
    Called No to the legalization of homosexuality, the Liberian Church has forcefully declared their opposition to same-sex marriage and the decriminalization of sodomy.
    In a press release, the coalition group says: The majority of Liberians are saying No to the legalization of homosexualism in the country because it is opposed to the laws and commandments of God.
    It corrupts our moral values and contributes to social indiscipline in the society, it is un-African and therefore foreign to our culture and current way of life, and it is a threat to reproduction and future population of our country.
    It is inherently a conduit for the spread of HIV/AIDS, accepting or approving such a practice brings a curse upon all of our nation, and, to recognize a same-sex marriage prepares our future government to subsequently recognize the marriage of a man to an animal by redefining the universally understood meaning of marriage.
    The Church, which also includes the Interreligious Council, are asking for $10,000 (£6196, 7695) in order to formally launch their campaign on 10 November.
    It will cover media publicity, transportation, printing of t-shirts, etc to stop the government from removing an amendment which bans marriage between polygamists, family members and members of the same-sex.
    Over the past year, anti-gay attacks have increased in Liberia and there have been calls for a Kill The Gays bill similar to Uganda. In Liberia, 98% of people are Christian or Muslim and the country’s motto is the ‘love of liberty brought us here’.
    Gay rights activists have promised they will campaign to have Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleafs Nobel Peace Prize removed if she signs a bill toughening anti-gay laws.
