Her refusal to conceal her strong opinions, even when posing questions to a president, and her public hostility toward Israel, caused discomfort among colleagues.
In 2010, that tendency finally ended a career which had started in 1943 and made her one of the best known journalists in Washington. On a videotape circulated on the Internet, she said Israelis should “get out of Palestine” and “go home” to Germany, Poland or the United States. The remark brought down widespread condemnation and she ended her career.

Elle avait commencé à couvrir la Maison Blanche pour l’agence de presse UPI dans les années 60, à l’époque du président Kennedy, et était restée en poste jusqu’en 2010 et son départ en retraite survenu après des déclarations controversées.

Born in Winchester, Kentucky, Thomas was the seventh of the ten children of George and Mary (Rowady) Thomas, immigrants from Tripoli, Lebanon. Thomas has said her father’s surname, “Antonious”, was anglicized to “Thomas” when he entered the U.S. at Ellis Island, and that her parents could neither read nor write.

Helen Thomas’ life was a relentless search for the truth, without fear or favor. It was her calling, profession and duty.
She loved being a journalist, and she strived daily to deliver accurate news to the American people. “If your mother says she loves you,” she was fond of saying, “get a second opinion.”
Helen burned with outrage at injustice. As the daughter of Lebanese immigrants, she was at the receiving end of racism and discrimination growing up in Detroit.
The memory of slurs hurled at her as a child still stung. She decried the racism and segregation she found in Washington, DC in the 1940s, arriving as a young ambitious reporter.(...)
