Recently, an interesting hashtag has been trending on Twitter. #TheStrengthToSayNo campaign is a joint initiative between Penguin Books and BetterIndia.com, and is inspired by the life story of Rekha Kalindi – a young girl who was starved and beaten by her mother for refusing to be married off at the age of 11. Seven years have passed since then and Rekha is now a champion girls’ rights activist, campaigning to end child marriage worldwide.
The fact is, it’s not just India that has a problem with early forced marriages; this is a custom prevalent in many different areas of the world. Unfortunately, as of today, 250 million girls, the equivalent to 1 in 3 of the total female population, were married before the age of 15. If current trends continue, another 140 million will be married by 2020. Often there is a significant age gap between bride and groom and, as usual, it is girls who are disenfranchised the most.

Last week there was an uproar from the Indian human rights lobby in general and women’s groups in particular when news broke about the abuse of 2 Nepali women used as sex slaves by a Saudi diplomat stationed in New Delhi.
The women, who had originally been promised employment as maids, had been imprisoned in the diplomat’s luxury flat, tortured, starved, raped, sodomized, abused and beaten. They were also forced to provide sex for the diplomat’s friends when he so commanded them. One finally managed to escape and alerted the police and a human rights NGO. The Saudi diplomat’s wife reportedly had the gall to verbally abuse the police who raided the flat.

The ongoing conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has been the deadliest since the Second World War. More than 5 million people have died – mainly of starvation and disease – and marauding militia groups have raped and abused hundreds of thousands of women and children.
Deep in the east of the country, where the war began in the aftermath of the Rwandan genocide, one surgeon in a small and underfunded hospital is giving women and children a reason for hope.

The perpetrators of these crimes destroy life at its entry point. The women can no longer have children. Often they get infected with AIDS and will spread the disease. Their men are humiliated. So the perpetrators destroy the entire social fabric of their enemies, their communities, their future generations, without even killing the woman.

An average computer would require not only constant energy, but also someone with moderate computer literacy to operate it. But e-readers don’t have such obstacles. Any child could start to use an e-reader within minutes, with no prior IT literacy. It is possible to fit literally thousands of books into an e-reader. With the combination of freely available children’s classics and perhaps copyright donations from individual authors and publishing houses, every child could own a large library.

‘We make money from inflation, stagnation, and even starvation,’ says the brash young banker outside a branch of Barclays bank in the City of London.
‘Yes,’ agrees the Barclays branch worker, although she seems unsure about the posters he’s sticking up in the window. ‘Have THEIR cake and eat it,’ reads one. The other depicts a golden sheaf of maize and advertises ‘A-MAIZING returns’.
The banker stops passers-by, extolling the benefits of brand-new food investment products. The investments could force people to go hungry, but, the banker and his colleagues assure them, ‘those people are in a place you’re never going to go to.’
The banker is an actor, and the unsuspecting members of the public are suitably outraged by the idea of making money at the expense of starving people. But the World Development Movement’s new video, made with the pranksters from the BBC TV show The Revolution Will Be Televised, parodies the real-life impact Barclays has on food prices and hunger.

The biometrics and the Aadhaar identification number will serve as a verifiable, portable, all but unfakable national ID. I think overt censorship is slated to become a big problem in the near future. Internet censorship, surveillance, the project of the electronic UID (Unique Identity card)… ominous. Imagine a government that cannot provide food or water to its people, a government whose policies have created a population of 800 million people who live on less than 20 rupees [about 45 US cents] a day, a country which has the largest number of malnourished children in the world, which has, as a major priority, the desire to distribute UID cards to all of its citizens.
The UID is a corporate scam which funnels billions of dollars into the IT sector. To me, it is one of the most serious transgressions that is on the cards. It is nothing more than an administrative tool in the hands of a police state.

On Thursday evening, Mark Duggan was shot dead in by police officers in Tottenham. The IPCC immediately announced they would investigate; unusual for an organisation known for its inefficiency. The media were told that a non-police issue firearm had been recovered from the scene, and that one of the police officers had been injured. Later reports revealed a bullet found lodged in a police radio.
I received a torrent of abuse online for expressing support for the #riots. I expect Martin Luther King got the same abuse when he said “A riot is the language of the unheard” as did Bob Marley for singing “That’s why we gonna be burning and looting tonight…” .
I’m sorry, but my solidarity does not lie with corporations making millions and their fully-insured smashed windows, it lies with human beings who lose their lives and their
families.

Jody McIntyre shot to fame (or notoriety) during the student riots. He garnered a lot of publicity by alleging that the police assaulted him and pushed him out of his wheelchair after he had deliberately placed himself at the front line of the riots in Westminster. Far from being just a run-of-the-mill student, though, it swiftly turned out that he was a hard core hard-left activist who was closely enough involved with the violent disorder that he was apparently part of the group who ended up on the roof of Millbank along with the fire extinguisher-thrower.

I’ve reported McIntyre to the Metropolitan Police for the offence of incitement to riot – you can do so too by phoning 101 to be connected to the Met’s control room, whether you report McIntyre or another instance of incitement.
