Israelis and Palestinians generally don’t agree on much, but a recent poll, financed by the Konrad Adenauer and Ford Foundations (pdf), suggested that 70 per cent of Israelis, and an almost equal proportion of Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza, rated the chances for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state in the next five years as “non-existent” or “low”. They are right. There won’t be an independent Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza and there will be no “two-state solution”. German Chancellor Angela Merkel criticized market speculation against the euro, saying that financial institutions bailed out with public funds are exploiting the budget crisis in Greece and elsewhere. In a speech in Hamburg, she hit out at currency speculators, who she said are taking advantage of debt piled up by euro-area governments to combat the financial crisis. “The debt that had to be accumulated, when it was going badly, is now becoming the object of speculation by precisely those institutions that we saved a year-and-a-half ago. That’s very difficult to explain to people in a democracy who should trust us.”

And since it was difficult to explain, it appears, she gave up trying.

Although many don’t realise it today, the theory is anti-Semitic in origin and its early proponents emphasised that these philosophers were all Jewish. Breivik’s lengthy “manifesto” devotes an entire section to profiling Theodor Adorno, Herbert Marcuse and other Frankfurt school thinkers.

A threat to ethnic purity; betrayal by corrupt elites; the presence of a foreign invader – these are familiar themes for the far right. But the ideology of the “counter-jihad” movement marks a shift from neo-Nazism, whose followers believe above all in the international Jewish conspiracy – and that immigration is a Jewish-led plot to dilute European racial stock.

The difference here is that Breivik’s themes have widespread mainstream credibility. Islamophobia is rampant across western Europe, while Britain’s press leads the field with its drip-feed of anti-Muslim coverage.

We are asking the wrong question about the Poly Implant Prothèse (PIP) breast implants. Yes, they rupture, releasing industrial-grade silicone mattress-filler into women’s bodies. But we don’t need new research to know what the medical outcomes will be. The effects of putting silicone into the body have been charted since the 1950s, when the first augmentations started going wrong. The right question to ask is this: why has it been allowed to continue for half a century?

Cosmetic surgery is nothing more than an industrial-scale scientific experiment. The augmentation of women’s breasts began as an application of chemical wizardry, ushered in on the gleaming wings of postwar science. The surgeon’s hypothesis has been that a problem of self-esteem can be fixed using polymers and medical technology. This didn’t always go well - in the 1950s and 1960s, women were given augmentations that sometimes went so wrong that they needed mastectomies. Now, though, the results are in.

In the last twelve months it has attacked government websites in Syria, declared cyber war on a brutal Mexican drug cartel, and exposed an anti-WikiLeaks “dirty tricks campaign” allegedly plotted by a prominent US security firm. But on Friday, Anonymous, a diffuse network of internet hackers, reached a new level when it intercepted and leaked a conference call between FBI agents and Scotland Yard detectives.

The astonishing feat - confirmed as genuine by the FBI - was apparently carried out after the hackers breached email accounts belonging to the authorities. In doing so, they were able to snoop on communications being exchanged between forces involved in a joint international anti-hacking operation across England, Ireland, Holland, France, Denmark, Sweden and America. In a piece of surreal real-life theatre, the tables were embarrassingly and dramatically turned. The investigators became the investigated; the watchers became the watched.

The call in question, which lasts around 16 minutes, is one of the boldest leaks ever produced by the hackers, and it may also be one of the most revelatory. A fascinating glimpse into a highly classified world, it shows the extent to which the Metropolitan police is willing to collaborate with its foreign counterparts as part of cyber-crime investigations, even if doing so means interfering with the British judicial process. At one point during the call, for instance, one of the Scotland Yard detectives tells his FBI colleagues that they secretly delayed an ongoing court case involving two UK-based suspected hackers - Jake Davis and Ryan Cleary - at America’s behest.

The Global Fund has for years been one of the most important fronts in the battle to beat back HIV/Aids. It has helped put 3.2 million people on anti-retroviral therapy (ARVs). But it has been running on empty for a year now, since securing just $10 billion — half of what it hoped for — during a major funding replenishment a year ago. Some countries also recently cut their pledges owing to concerns about the way the Global Fund is operated.

Ten billion dollars sounds like peanuts in comparison to the bank bailouts we have gotten used to in recent years — it’s about the same amount that Goldman Sachs has cheerfully set aside in bonuses again this year.

It is difficult to find well-informed objectivity in the Guardian’s book on Assange, sold lucratively to Hollywood, in which Assange is described gratuitously as a “damaged personality” and “callous”. In the book, Leigh revealed the secret password Assange had given the paper. The disclosure of this code, designed to protect a digital file containing the US embassy cables, set off a chain of events that led to the release of all the files. The Guardian denies “utterly” that it was responsible for the release. What then was the point of publishing the password?

The Guardian’s Hackgate exposures were a tour de force; the Murdoch empire may disintegrate as a result. But, with or without Murdoch, a media consensus endures that echoes, from the BBC to the Sun, a corrupt, warmongering political establishment. Assange’s crime has been to threaten this consensus: those who fix the “parameters” of news and political ideas, and whose authority as media commissars is challenged by the revolution of the internet. The prize-winning former Guardian journalist Jonathan Cook has experience of both worlds.

Where is the outrage over a law that was greeted by the right-wing news site Israel National News with the headline: “Cabinet Extends Measure Preventing ’Invasion by Marriage’”? Why, for Avnery and others, is the anti-boycott law — and not the legally-sanctioned separation of Palestinian spouses — the final straw? The key difference seems to be that the former will affect Jewish Israelis.

The ban on family unification is just one example, of course — Israel’s "vibrant democracy’"has long meant something rather different for Palestinians. But its renewal at the same time as the anti-boycott law dominated the headlines highlights the problematic politics of a mainstream Israeli left that seems more invigorated by a perceived urgency to “save Zionism” (i.e. through two-state ethnic separation) than by a fight against colonial occupation.
