http://www.survivalfrance.org/actu/9092

❝“The Battle for Souls” is an inside story of how many of the more than 100 000 albinos in Tanzania live in fear of being killed for their body parts, which are believed by some to have mystical and healing powers. While the world was struggling to tame the impact of the global economic crisis, Tanzania was the scene of some of the most atrocious crimes. Local traders planned and executed the killings of albinos to get a hold of their organs in order to boost business. Richard Mgamba, who is based in Dar es Salaam, began his journalism career in 1998, covering stories about Tanzania’s mining, fishing and cotton sectors, as well as arms smuggling in the Great Lakes region. In 2007 he became chief editor of The Citizen and The Sunday Citizen, the most widely-read English-language newspaper in his country.❞

❝Disputes between Malawi and Tanzania over the ownership of Lake Nyasa, which borders the two countries, were rekindled recently when Malawi awarded a contract to British Surestream Petroleum to start gas and oil exploration on the eastern part of the lake. The 1890 Heligoland Agreement between colonial Britain and Germany defined that the border of Lake Nyasa lies along the Tanzanian side of the lake. This was reasserted at the 1963 Organisation of African Unity summit. International law, however, designates that borders are generally in the middle of a body of water, implying half of the lake belongs to Tanzania. Explorations for oil and gas are likely to endanger the current negotiations between the two countries to resolve the border issue and even pose a security threat.

President Jakaya Kikwete of Tanzania has insisted that war with Malawi is not a feasible outcome of ongoing disputes between the two countries over the ownership of the lake which borders the two countries.

Lake Nyasa, known as Lake Malawi by Malawians, has been the source of disagreements since colonial times, which were rekindled recently when Malawi allowed gas and oil exploration to begin around the lake’s border. Rhetoric has escalated over the past few months although it seems both sides are now attempting to calm tensions.❞

Lives on hold
http://farmlandgrab.org/post/view/20763

❝A new report by the Oakland Institute, Lives on Hold, exposes the consequences of Iowa-based AgriSol Energy LLC's plans to lease more than 800,000 acres in Tanzania. The project initiated in 2007-2008 has moved forward without public debate or consent, and will evict more than 160,000 long-term residents of Katumba and Mishamo, who remain in the dark over compensation and relocation plans. The AgriSol land deal is a part of Kilimo Kwanza, or Agriculture First, the Tanzanian government's scheme to promote agricultural development through public-private partnerships.

In June 2011, the Oakland Institute revealed how Iowa-based Bruce Rastetter, CEO of AgriSol Energy, leveraged the involvement of Iowa State University's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences to provide legitimacy to this deal. Initially masquerading the project as responsible agricultural investment, the university completely withdrew any support or association with it in February 2012 under growing public pressure. While AgriSol claims to have halted operations in Katumba and Mishamo until the refugees have been relocated, Lives on Hold depicts how the relocation is to be accomplished.❞

❝Orphans in secondary schools are now in danger of being exploited by child traffickers who lure them out of school with promises of training them in Europe, but instead exploit them for money, it has been revealed.❞

❝The incidence of internal trafficking is higher than that of transnational trafficking, and is usually facilitated by family members’, friends’, and intermediaries’ offers of assistance with education or finding lucrative employment in urban areas.

It further states that the use of young girls for forced domestic service continues to be Tanzania’s largest human trafficking problem. “Girls from rural areas are taken to urban centres and Zanzibar for domestic service,” the report says.❞
