Nous racontons une histoire oubliée qui est pourtant un moment important : les gens construisaient une société dont ils pensaient qu’elle durerait pour toujours. Ces évènements ont été largement effacés de l’histoire, aucun des principaux partis politiques ne veut s’en souvenir. Cela semble une bonne idée d’enregistrer les souvenirs de ces gens, de manière directe, tant qu’ils sont vivants.

Lørdag kveld er det planlagt en større feiring på Trafalgar Square i den britiske hovedstaden, og politiet er forberedt på bråk.

Selv om det ikke er organisert noen offisiell demonstrasjon, er det ventet at flere tusen vil møte opp. Ved 20-tiden lørdag kveld hadde et stort antall demonstranter samlet seg med plakater og dukker som skal forestille Thatcher.

Public spending and growth in GDP per person in rich countries

DURING her stint as British prime minister between 1979 and 1990, Margaret Thatcher strove mightily to curb public spending, yet it remained high compared with countries like America. Her most profound economic achievement was a comprehensive overhaul of product and labour markets. Cosy corporatism gave way to bracing competition, and trade-union barons were slung out of court. That paid dividends. British living standards had fallen behind those in other advanced countries like Germany and France in the three decades after the second world war. But, as can be seen in the chart below, Britain started to regain ground in the 1980s, and for the next two decades it substantially out-performed America, Japan, France, Germany and Italy.

Never have I witnessed a gap between the mainstream media and the public quite like the last twenty-four hours since the death of Margaret Thatcher. While both the press and President Obama were uttering tearful remembrances, thousands took to the streets of the UK and beyond to celebrate. Immediately this drew strong condemnation of what were called “death parties,” described as “tasteless”, “horrible” and “beneath all human decency.” Yet if the same media praising Thatcher and appalled by the popular response would bother to ask one of the people celebrating, they might get a story that doesn’t fit into their narrative, which is probably why they aren’t asking at all.

Margaret Thatcher, the friend of Chile’s fascist dictator General Augusto Pinochet and supporter of the apartheid system of racial discrimination in South Africa, has died of a stroke at the age of 87.

Neither the media’s eulogies to Thatcher as a great stateswoman, nor the staging of a day of national mourning complete with military honours, can conceal the fact that she died arguably the most hated figure in British politics.

A couple of years back, true believers were beside themselves at the collapse of their heroine’s reputation. The Tory London mayor, Boris Johnson, complained that Thatcher’s name had become a “boo-word”, a “shorthand for selfishness and me-firstism”. Her former PR guru Maurice Saatchi fretted that “her principles of capitalism are under question”.
