  • Tufekci Joins The Atlantic As Contributing Writer - The Atlantic
    https://www.theatlantic.com/press-releases/archive/2019/09/tufekci-joins-atlantic-contributing-writer/598678

Zeynep Tufekci is joining The Atlantic as a contributing writer, editor in chief Jeffrey Goldberg announced today. In this role, Tufekci will write regularly for The Atlantic about the intersection of technology, politics, and society.

“Zeynep has an uncanny ability, through clear writing and clear thinking, to make the incomprehensible understandable, and to spot trends before most anyone else,” Goldberg said.

Tufekci will appear at The Atlantic Festival tomorrow in Washington, D.C., in conversation with Goldberg. She will expand on the topics explored in her book, Twitter and Teargas: The Ecstatic, Fragile Politics of Networked Protest in the 21st Century, where she examined the possibilities and perils of modern protest movements that are increasingly rooted in online media.

Tufekci has been a contributing opinion writer at The New York Times and a columnist for Wired and Scientific American. She is currently an associate professor at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill’s School of Information and Library Science and a faculty associate at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society at Harvard University. Throughout her research and academic work, Tufekci has studied the convergence of social change, machine intelligence, privacy, and surveillance.

  • Les apologistes réformistes de l’#Etat_islamique
    http://www.middleeasteye.net/fr/opinions/les-apologistes-r-formistes-de-l-etat-islamique-1712515066

    Cela fait beaucoup d’apostats musulmans.

  • Why Audiences Hate Hard News—and Love Pretending Otherwise - Derek Thompson - The Atlantic
    http://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2014/06/news-kim-kardashian-kanye-west-benghazi/372906

You may not realize this, but we can see you. Yes, you. The human reading this article. We have analytics that tells us roughly where you are, what site you’ve just arrived from, how long you stay, how far you read, where you hop to next. We’ve got eyeballs on your eyeballs.

Why is it so important that digital news organizations track which articles you’re reading on our websites? The obvious answer is that it teaches us what you’re interested in. The less-obvious, but equally true, answer is that it teaches you what you’re interested in.

If we merely asked what you wanted, without measuring what you wanted, you’d just keep lying to us—and to yourself.

Here’s what I mean by lying. This year, the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism asked thousands of people around the world what sort of news was most important to them. The graph below shows the responses from Americans. International news crushed celebrity and “fun” news by a margin of two-to-one. Economic and political news finished even higher.

But what happens when we stop asking readers what’s important and start looking at what they actually read?

Ask audiences what they want, and they’ll tell you vegetables. Watch them quietly, and they’ll mostly eat candy.

  • How #The_Atlantic Can Do Better, Starting with #Malawi
    http://africasacountry.com/how-the-atlantic-can-do-better-starting-with-malawi

“Confronting a Sexual Rite of Passage in Malawi”, published by The Atlantic last Monday, is misleading and continues a long tradition of ethnocentric, sensationalist reporting on Africa. The article tells the tale of a 14-year-old girl, Grace Mwase, of Chiradzulu District in Malawi, saying that she defied a tradition of sleeping with an older man after she went through an initiation ceremony at the age of 10. I am not an expert on culture and customs in Malawi and one doesn’t have to be to get the story straight on customs and their impact on a community.

  • Jeffrey Goldberg’s innuendo belied by history
    http://www.hybridstates.com/2011/01/jeffrey-goldbergs-innuendo-belied-by-history

There is no doubt that conspiracy theories loom large in the Middle East [...], but Goldberg’s big problem is that in order to make his point he so often has to ignore: (1) reality, (2) counter-evidence (like here), or (3) meaningful complexities that render his ideological hack jobs less clear than he seems to believe.

In recent blog posts titled “The Mossad Did It”, he implies that believing Mossad would bomb targets in Egypt in order to raise ethnic tension is so far afield that only an anti-Semite could possibly believe it. But of course, the historical record is filled with examples of precisely this thing, of which the Lavon Affair was one of the most famous. In 1954, Israel was worried about Egypt’s relatively strong relationship with the US, and so decided to bomb American and British targets in Egypt and try to undermine the US-Egyptian relationship. Of course, the whole psychotic effort failed miserably, earning the euphemism “The Unfortunate Affair”, but not due to lack of effort or intention.

Given such an ugly history, Goldberg’s innuendos speak only of his ignorance and ideological attachments, not anti-Semitism.
