Visiblement, les humeurs changeantes d'Apple semblent avoir poussé le quotidien économique britannique de référence, le Financial Times, à revoir sa stratégie numérique. Le journal propose depuis un an une application iPad très réussie, longtemps gratuite et financée par des sponsors prestigieux, mais maintenant accessible dans sa totalité aux seuls abonnés. Cependant, les nouveaux abonnés iPad (et les données personnelles associées) restent prisonniers du système d'Apple, chose qui ne plait guère aux équipes du groupe Pearson. De plus, le développement des tablettes Android et un souci de mutualisation des moyens ont poussé l'entreprise à se tourner vers le HTML5.
